Tons of whining about pulling starters early but I guess no one meant Bassitt? All the whining comes from using our good relievers in all of these 1 run/extra inning butt clenchers without having an off day 9 games in a row?

Yes on on the first question, and also yes on the 2nd question, he's backed himself into a corner tonight, we only had Cabrera/Mayza and Swanson available tonight. Again, this was my comment on the matter and it's true.

The early hooks and overuse of the pen was a microcosm to tonight's loss.
<--- That's my complaint on the matter, Kikuchi shouldn't have been pulled at 75 pitches his last time out while he was shoving, inexcusable.

Last Friday? Yeah I guess so but Kikuchi is on a short leash because he SUCKED last year and has an ERA over 6 the third time through the lineup in his career. A big part of why he's looked okay this year is because they don't let him face the lineup a 3rd time. It can be frustrating though when you watch the game and he looks like he's dealing.

In Game 1 vs the Dodgers,

Romano on the mound near the end of the game, Schneider and Walker dart out of the dugout to check on him - over managing as usual. Romano notices they are coming for him but wants no part of it - gtfo. LA telecast mentioned it - not sure if SN caught it. Embarassing.

Schneider did what he did in Game 2 of the WC series and Atkins was already writing the contract extension up before the game was over. Can’t blame Buntoyo and Schneider for essentially having the same weaknesses when they are likely just doing what the FO wants them to. We will have to live with this as long as Atkins is the GM, and hope the talent can overcome it.

Why was last night a manager loss?

I didn't watch but it looks like Swanson just blew it or got unlucky.

Because we lost. If we lose, you have to blame someone.

I think the complaint is John choosing Espinal vs Merrifield at 2nd because Espy made a bad play that cost the game

DRS rankings at 2nd base this year

Espinal 0

Merrifield -4

Biggio -5

So the decision was a bad one because of the results?

Suck the DRS rankings. Anyone watching knows Witt has been more consistent, reliable and has a better baseball IQ. It was also a one run game and you took arguably our best hitter out of the line up.

yea can't look at drs in isolation

You can defend Espinal and Schneider as much as you want, but replacing Whit as Espinal at 2B was a mistake and clearly costed us.

Espinal was at 2B all game? There was no replacing that took place.

Yes brecause Varsho blows (left/righty don't care) and the team has no other opstions for the outfield so Merrifiled takes LF and that leaves Espinal at 2nd

...it's been this way the entire season, anytime an outfielder needs a day off Merrifield goes to the outfield and biggio/espi get 2nd

Espinal is a f***ing shortstop. He's not getting replaced at second base for defensive reasons because some defensive statistics don't like him this year, lol.

He f***ed up but that's on the player.

he's good defensivley so no argument there - he was just slow to react yesterday

Sounds like you didn’t watch the game and don’t understand the context of the whole discussion.

Come on man, even you are better than this. Who gives a f*** whether Kikuchi was bad last year. Your argument is similar to saying Manoah should be kept in games longer because he was good last year instead of taking into account how he is actually performing this season. Kikuchi is a much better pitcher this season than he was a year ago. His stuff is better and his command is much better. His numbers third time through the order this season are much improved vs over his career as well.

When he's dealing against a weak lineup, has ace like stuff on the night, is commanding his pitches effectively with minimal mistakes, accumulating whiffs, has shown no sign of fatigue either with regards to stuff or command, pulling him in the 70 pitch range is an extreme example of over managing. The Mariners did not look dangerous against him the entire game, and most of their baserunners up to that point were softly hit infield singles.

Kikuchi is a HR machine and he has been his whole career. His FIP still sucks.

He can't really be trusted to go deep. Sorry, Kooch.

It's not hard to understand, Carlie.

Good so you know that Witt’s spot came up in extras with the runner on 2b and he wasn’t there to hit either…. When Witt was pulled, it was a 1 run game.

Assuming, you also recall Espinal screwing the pooch already in key situations this year and Witt being super consistent and reliable. Like, someone I know I can count on on both sides, late innings/tight game with a good baseball IQ.

Low and behold, what happened..

Wow you seem upset! I thought my post was pretty well reasoned. Number 5 talent who has struggled throughout his career has a short leash when it comes to the 3rd time through the lineup. I even said it can be frustrating. Who knew that take would warrant insults?

Surprising because Espinal has looked bad defensively all year

Espi is also at 16th percentile by Statcast defensively this year. -3 OAA at 2B and -1 at SS. Biggio falls into the same percentile at -4 OAA at 2B and +1 at 1B.

I think both players should be upgraded on and if that's internal options like Davis Schneider or Ernie Clement or Otto Lopez or by trade.

If the score is 1-0 and Kikuchi is pitching a perfect game instead of just a regular gem, do you still pull him third time through the order?

That's the question you need to answer if you really believe in what you're doing.
