My thoughts exactly. I am thoroughly disappointed with how this trade deadline went. We can honestly say we didn't add an impact starter or a late inning reliever. Despite acquiring 4 MLB Pitchers and a position player.

Bass has the 7th highest fWAR for relievers in the league lol.

I do agree somewhat though, Iglesias would have been a good add.

Bass has literally been the 7th best reliever in baseball this season. Swing and miss is not everything.

We improved our bullpen, added some starting depth and... I don't really know what Merrifield was for, but maybe it means Zimmer can f*** the f*** off?

Bass is a nice add assuming he can actually carry that success into the AL East. Pop could end up being a nice add as well for middle innings. But the issue is more we needed a set up/closer calibre pitcher, maybe even 2...and we instead got Bass who is probably overmatched in that role. Bottom line, we did not at all keep pace with the likes of the Yankees or Mariners today.

I think that viewing the trade deadline as an arms race is a good way to burn assets shorten your contention window. Playoffs are a crapshoot.

This is true but the same can be said every year. At some point you have to go for it.

I hope this definitely means that Zimmer can f*** off.

I think in a perfect world, we all would have loved an impact starter like Carlos Rodon, or Alex Cobb or Luis Castillo, though it wasn't the most important if the price tag was too much. I'm happy the Jays added a No. 4/5 starter in White who actually can be quite decent and isn't a two month rental. To me, there is no difference in White and Syndergaard. Thor was a previous ace and former Jays farmhand, so he would have came with more fanfare. Otherwise, White is the more valuable asset.

As for the bullpen, I like Bass and Pop, though agree another arm with high K% would have been nice.

Merrifield can play 2B/CF and is a game changer on the base paths which I think will be a huge plus in the Postseason. Obviously would have preferred someone like Ian Happ or Joc Pederson, though Merrifield will suffice. Wish the Jays could have dealt another arm instead of Castillo, since he makes for a good swingman or 7th starter lets say if an injury happens or Kikuchi self destructs.

I think we got what we really needed without hurting the farm system significantly

Happy to see Zimmer now expendable

Wish we could could have kept Castillo

Get people - bad; don't get people - bad.

Some people are just miserable lol

Pretty obvious why people would be upset. Other than Bass, we worked around the edges. People hoped we'd inject some key pieces like our main competitors did.

Our bullpen was an obvious point of weakness in the offseason so I was upset that we didn't do much when all it would have cost us was cash at that point. Now we put ourselves in a position where we had to trade prospect capital for that same weakness.

Our front office clearly places 0 importance on bullpen help. Ah well, this is who we got so let's do this!!

I feel the bullpen overall is improved. There's more quality arms to call upon now which is exciting that we don't have to see the likes of Beasley or Banda anymore. I just don't know how much better we actually got in moments that actually matter. We still don't have that guy that come in and get strikeout an important situations. Bench is slightly improved with another component option. And we added another Swingman to the Rotation/Bullpen when we really needed was atleast another mid rotation option. Some of the trades I would have preferred they didn't make. The Miami one I am good with. The Royals one I'm ok with. Dislike the Dodgers one immensely. I don't feel the areas we needed got addressed.

Blue Jays' GM Ross Atkins was thrilled with the deadline-beating deal.

"He (Merrifield) is such a good player. He is very accomplished with incredible experiences, the versatility, the contact ability, the speed, playing multiple positions, incredible baserunner, feel very good about him at so many different positions and that versatility will help us down the stretch … we're very well covered now," Atkins told a Zoom call minutes before the Jays opened their nine-game road trip in Florida.

The GM didn't bite when asked about his plans for get vaccinated or if he'd be pitching at the Rogers Centre any time soon.

"He was acquired right at the deadline, so this is a very fresh acquisition and so because of that I'm not going to comment more on that process for him, and let him work through that with his family. I've basically said hello to him and that's it," added Atkins.

Sounds like Atkins really did his due diligence.

I'm so confused... who's pitching for us and who aren't we sure will get vaccinated? Lol

This teams window doesn’t end in 2022, team is better now.

With Teo/Gurriel/Chapman set to become free agents in 2023, the pressure will sure start mounting next year.

We can now confirm without hesitation that Merrifield will be available for all road games.

The f***? They added two decent bullpen upgrades as well as a swing-man. I think you're just upset because we didn't snag any sexy names.

Did Atkins go on vacation or something? Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone are building a superteam and Ross Stand-Pat-kins is asleep at the wheel. WAKE UP ROSS. Put your team of nerds to bed, roll up your sleeves, grab a bottle of bourbon and start shipping prospects out for veteran talent ASAP.

Yes. His April was hilariously bad. He's been much better ever since, and had a very nice July.

Thanks - with Springer being made of glass - it makes sense. He's definitely a big upgrade over Zimmer and adding a base-stealing element never hurts. The bottom line is he makes the team better. As do the pitchers we landed.

Mitch White looks to be an interesting under-the-radar get here as well. Stripling has worked out well so you never know. And certainly, a guy like Bass is an upgrade over the likes of a Beasley.

Not a terribly exciting deadline but the team is better now than yesterday.

We got CF depth, relief and starting depth and gave up lottery tickets. I like the moves they made. This front office has been pretty accurate when they have traded away high profile prospects in the past. I have to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point.

That literally means nothing, some of the biggest morons I know when it comes to the Jays/MLB have been "watching" for 40+ years.

Jeff Blair seems clueless and he owns a show! LOL

I don't classify anything we gave up as lottery ticket outside of Moises Brito. Every other prospect traded has either already appeared in the Majors or will within the next 2 seasons.

"Toronto Blue Jays

Landing groundball machine Zach Pop (18 G, 3.60 ERA, 63.1 GB%) and veteran setup man Anthony Bass (45 G, 16 HLD, 1.41 ERA) in exchange for a diminishing asset in former top prospect Jordan Groshans was a nice under-the-radar move by the Blue Jays. The oft-injured Groshans is hitting a punchless .250/.348/.296 with one home run in 279 plate appearances at Triple-A this year, while the Blue Jays upgrade a bullpen that ranks 15th in the majors with a 3.89 ERA. They also added Whit Merrifield at the buzzer. While he's having a down year with an 81 OPS+ in 95 games, he can still be a key contributor for the stretch run."

Honestly makes sense for the O's, assuming the baby arms have stuff

Lopez is vastly overrated and possibly not an elite reliever.

I wasn't on that train, O's did well, me thinks.
