Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 The f***? They added two decent bullpen upgrades as well as a swing-man. I think you're just upset because we didn't snag any sexy names. No, I'm upset because not a single player that we got should be expected to play a big role for us in the playoffs other than Bass. This is while our competition got guys who should be doing just that even with Hou and NYY already being clearly better than us at the moment. Maybe your expectations are to just be a playoff team... a lot of people have world series aspirations.

To get there, we would have had to empty the farm system ala SD. Unfortunately a lot of our prospects have had s***** years and we simply don't have the depth or the player that other teams want right now. It's a difficult realization for most. Good news is the Braves and Nationals just won World Series titles when they weren't in the upper echelon of teams heading into the playoffs either.
mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 I honestly think it was kind of a sneaky good deadline. No sexy names but a lot of good, under-the-radar types who compliment our needs well. Merrifield - versatility and speed Marlins duo - options out of the pen White - starting depth with decent upside I didn't want to gut the farm. The idea here is sustainable success and none of the moves made today are likely to be at the expense of the future. Everyone we got will be here at least next year and we're certainly better today than we were yesterday and all it cost us was a plumetting infield prospect who's stalled in AAA and a promising pitching prospect whose numbers are inflated due to being 23 in the low minors.

This is something that shouldn't be underrated. We didn't acquire rentals. These are pieces that will help us win this year and next year (and for some - several more years)

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 The Jays weren't going to trade their way into being a "top team" like the Yankees or Dodgers today. For that to happen they will need Vlad and Bo to go back to being 6 and 5 fWAR players more than anything else. But make no mistake, this team IS good enough to win the world series right now. Just have to get to the playoffs and be somewhat hot when they get there.

Postseasons are still crapshoots so its not like we have no chance. I just hope all this talk about sustainable winning will come to fruition because seeing Teo/Gurriel/Chapman being free agents in 2023 with our farm system not even being that good anymore scares me. Shatkins always spoke about having waves of minor league talent being infused to the big league team. We don't have much left there tbh.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 How often do you think one of the “top teams” actually win the World Series? Agreed... I like our offense and starting pitching in any series. It just comes down to the elite bullpen arms where we fall short compared to the other teams. This is still a huge factor as we've seen postseason after postseason so I'm surprised Shatkins continue to neglect this in the offseason.

Wave 1 was Bo, Vlad, Jansen, Bo Wave 2 was Manoah, Kirk, Espinal, Romano Wave 3 will be Moreno, Tiedemann, Zulu, Orelvis, Pearson, Juenger, Horwitz, Barger Wave 4 will be Gabriel Martinez, Jimenez, Carter, Meza, Brandon Barriera, Josh Kasevich, Tucker Toman, etc. Obviously there are a lot of unknowns and guesses in Wave 3 and 4, but so far, they have delivered waved of quality players from our system and I still see a lot of good players and waves on the way. The reason we'll have waves is because they resisted the urge to burn a lot of these assets at the deadline this year.

It seems iffy to me other than Moreno but we'll see how that plays out. Sadly he's pretty much blocked with Jansen/Kirk ahead of him currently. I'm sure we'll figure that out during the offseason. Wave 4 is just too far away to consider at this time (too much can change). Edited August 3, 2022 by Jays24

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Catchers are so finnicky... Look at Joey Bart, Campusano and many more... Should have moved Moreno while value was sky high...
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Moreno is going to be interesting. A lot to like, but that noodle bat. Hope some power develops. Ya he seems like a better hitting Espinal, which isn't a bad thing but not where you'd expect the number 1 prospect in baseball to be. Teams can play him shallow to take a lot away from him if he doesn't show any power.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Im guessing one of Lourdes/Teo gets dealt in the offseason. I understand not wanting to trade one of them mid-season and possibly ruin clubhouse mojo. Springer in RF next year with a Tapia/Merrifield platoon situation in CF. Horwitz could be in the mix for RF/LF too. Other than that the team is pretty much already set next year. I rate this deadline as just OK. Shored up the bullpen a bit, Bass is sneaky good and Pop could contribute over the next few years. White should be a decent 5th starter option along with Kikuchi maybe. Merrifield is better than the stats he’s put up this year IMO. I’m fine with not selling off our top 3-4 prospects for a slightly better shot in the postseason this year which is already a crapshoot anyways. Fangraphs has the Jays at 97% chance to make the playoffs and that’s good enough IMO. Orioles got weaker and we still have tons of games against them. That will decide our season I feel

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Have we mocked the Rockies over this yet?
mellowgold Verified Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Have we mocked the Rockies over this yet? Haha they literally have no idea what's going on around the league.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 The Blue Jays were considered a World Series contender on Opening Day, though things have changed since then. Look I agree as well the Jays are a solid team and "if" they can get to the Postseason, they have as good of a chance against anyone. Any upgrades can only help and give the Blue Jays a better chance at going further. I love the Bass and Pop trade, though those two alone won't put this team over the top. As well, lets see what the Jays do against teams like Tampa Bay, Minnesota, New York, Seattle over the next two months. They've beat up on some easy teams the past two weeks so I wouldn't get all excited and think this is the real team. It's funny how before this hot streak, everyone on here were panicking and crying for the Blue Jays to make significant upgrades. Now all of a sudden, posters like you and others are saying "this team is a World Series contender as is." Funny how things change that quickly. Funny how Toronto had the toughest schedule in the first half and NY one of the easiest, the Jays are a contender, funny how that is eh, bro? Toronto did well at this deadline.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 I think you would be hard pressed to find a post from me that was panicking or crying for the Blue Jays to make a significant upgrade. My opinion on this team and their chances at the post season have not changed much at all this season. Exactly, jaysblue's dumn.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Have we mocked the Rockies over this yet? Jesus christ. Imagine stating that so confidently too.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Maybe building renovations are THE priority? The renos and money have nothing to do with the Jays payroll parameters, why do people keep saying this?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Last hour should be fun. I still think some big moves will be made and I don't think the Jays are completely done. Sure sounded like it? lol
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Beasley to the Pirates for cash is such garbage. I thought the Jays had all this money to make moves, yet they gave away a possible bullpen piece for nothing to offset cash coming in from Merrifield and Bass? Wtf? Am I missing something here?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Funny how Toronto had the toughest schedule in the first half and NY one of the easiest, the Jays are a contender, funny how that is eh, bro? Toronto did well at this deadline. I think any team that makes the Postseason can be considered a World Series contender. Do I think majority of the teams who would make the Postseason are better than the Blue Jays right now? Yes. Yankees and Astros are superior teams in the AL. Dodgers, Padres, Braves, Mets are superior teams in the NL. Other teams like the Twins, Rays, Mariners won't be easy as a Wildcard matchup. I said Toronto did well at this deadline and did improve but they didn't add really an impact arm like a Rodon or Castillo which I think could have really helped and take this team to the next level.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Exactly, jaysblue's dumn. STFU meat!
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Sure sounded like it? lol I couldn't see the Jays just settling on Bass and Pop. Happy to see them get White and Merrifield at the end.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 STFU meat! Sooo much Whine, need some cheese?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 I like what the Twins have done. Adding Mahle, Jorge Lopez, Sandy Leon and now Fulmer. Nothing flashy by any means, but definitely solid additions to fill out the rotation and bullpen. And the funny thing is, the Twins don't even have the core Toronto has in place and are more banged up, yet these are the type of moves a team with Postseason aspirations should be making. Hahahaha...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 The New York Yankees are acquiring Harrison Bader from the St. Louis Cardinals for Jordan Montgomery, according to sources familiar with the situation. Nice for the Cards.
