Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I think you would be hard pressed to find a post from me that was panicking or crying for the Blue Jays to make a significant upgrade. My opinion on this team and their chances at the post season have not changed much at all this season. I think we're pretty much bang on the off-season predictions so far. The real surprise has been the Yankees going nuts.
jerb Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 Heard the Padres still trying to trade Wil Myers and his $$ before the deadline
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Woah when did Brandon Drury become useful? Since April of this season haha.
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 If they miss out on making the Postseason, what do you think happens? What if they miss out on the postseason after making a stupendously big move? Do certain trades come with guarantees that postseason is set in stone?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 What if they miss out on the postseason after making a stupendously big move? Do certain trades come with guarantees that postseason is set in stone? What is, or should be the goal of the team this year and in this window?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I remember when everyone declares the Padres World series contenders before last season and they fell flat HARD expectations are just as high now. Their starting pitching better hold up
jerb Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Robert Murray @ByRobertMurray The Seattle Mariners are acquiring catcher Curt Casali from the San Francisco Giants for Michael Stryffeler, according to sources familiar with the situation.
Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 What is, or should be the goal of the team this year and in this window? The goal is to make playoffs and I think we addressed the one thing that might hold us back from that. I do not understand the assumptions that because we did not make huge moves, our goals/chances have diminished when the onus of that is internal to so many players underperforming, not all (if any) can be fixed at the trade deadline. We need to add SP depth and OF depth, sure and I am hoping its coming

Do certain trades come with guarantees that postseason is set in stone? Where did I suggest they make a stupendously big move? It would be a shame if they missed out on the Postseason by one game again because they failed to address some weak areas on their roster during the offseason and at the trade deadline.
204Jays Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Feels like the Jays are done this deadline. Unless the purported prices drop in the next hour. With the $ they've invested in Kooch, I'm not sure they could justify bumping him down for a 5th SP arm.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I truly feel Iglasias is just a matter of dollars plus scrubs.. If I find out we missed out soley because of $$ I will be pissed!!

Ray Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 SP: Noah Sydergaard Carlos Rodon Nathan Eovaldi Pablo Lopez Martin Perez RP: Michael Fulmer Gregory Soto Andrew Chafin David Bednar Raisel Iglasias Hitters: Ian Happ JD Martinez Joc Pederson ...still on the trade block. Could be tons of moves to come still. Feel like Atkins is waiting for a team to drop the prices the last hour.
204Jays Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Maybe building renovations are THE priority? I wonder if mgmt thinks this is a year too early to be 'all-in'? Seeing what the Braves, Yanks, and others have done, we seem to be saving up our prospect capital

They already moved Ruff..

We need to add SP depth and OF depth, sure and I am hoping its coming Again, where did I say everything can be fixed at a trade deadline? There is nothing wrong with this Blue Jays core when they're all clicking and healthy. You're not adding another big superstar or an elite ace SP to the rotation at the trade deadline. They addressed the bullpen today with Bass and Pop which was nice. Another SP would have been nice for depth purposes, but lets hope guys like Stripling and Kikuchi can stick as the No. 4 and 5. If the Jays lose one of their top three arms like Gasuman, Manoah or Berrios for a significant time or even just 2 or 3 starts, that will bite them. As well, hope Springer plays everyday down the stretch and they don't lose anyone else to a major injury or else you're looking at more ABs for Tapia and Zimmer! So yeah kind of nice to have some assurances and depth, which most World Series contenders have.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Indians just traded Sandy Leon... Does that mean we can trade them a catcher for a pitcher Or are they setting up for a Contresas deal...
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Last hour should be fun. I still think some big moves will be made and I don't think the Jays are completely done.

Could be tons of moves to come still. Feel like Atkins is waiting for a team to drop the prices the last hour. Ideally, we need thw following still - a good left handed CF for Springer Insurance that also let's Zimmer be punted off the roster. - Depth 5th starter in case Kikuchi continues to suck - 1 shut down Bullpen arm (this area is too weak compared to the other contenders). Hour left to patch up the holes.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 The issue is this team hasn't clicked fully. Vlad is underperforming to what we need him to be (some semblance of last year), Bo is underperforming, Lourdes has lost a lot of power, Kirk has regressed since his hot stretch (111 wRC in July), Romano has regressed, starting pitching has been flaky (Even Gausman), etc... etc... You can't address all that with couple of big moves in the trade deadline. Our biggest problem was we had no swing/miss and we got two who can fix that. But there's no way you can expect the FO to fix all the underperforming from everyone else during the trade deadline. Like how do you expect to get Judge-ish level of performance from a trade deadline candidate so that we can 'compete' against Yankees on paper? Most teams infront of us have MVP candidates - Judge, Alvarez, Freeman, Alonso; and our supposed MVP candidate might not even hit 30 HRs before the season wraps up. During Schneider's tenure we have finally seen this team play up to their potential. The offence has really been humming at top 3 in runs scored, and the pitching staff has been very solid as well during this stretch. They haven't been facing the highest quality of competition but the 12-3 record hasn't been undeserved in the slightest. The entire team's offence really went into the tank in early July around the time of the rough west coast road trip. The team's offence dipped to 86 WRC+ and they only scored 2.7 runs per game. This was unfortunate timing for an offensive slip as the Gausman injury and double header really blew up the pitching staff during this period. This looks like it was more of a speed bump as the team has rebounded with 6.5 runs per game in their next 15 games. It's rare to see an entire offence click like the team enjoyed in July, however as guys like Kirk have cooled off a bit in July but Chapman has exploded and picked up the slack. Vlad has been really damn good over his last few months of play, not 2021 levels but given how many great hitters he's surrounded with he doesn't need to carry the offence. Gurriel looks like he may be sacrificing some power in trade for a more contact oriented approach, but this may actually lead to him being a far more consistent performer as a result. The pitching staff completely tanked during this period as well. The Gausman injury and double header completely blew up the bullpen for several weeks, and the team struggled to a 5.23 ERA/5.44 FIP during this period. They have righted the ship during the stretch of better play with a 2.71 ERA/3.50 FIP.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Not even the Angels can f*** up this Thor situation up can they? If they don't deal him because their price was too high then they really f***ed the pooch

Some teams might see Iglesias as having negative value on that contract Meaning Angels need to accept nearly worthless prospect and eat some money

Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 (edited) Again, where did I say everything can be fixed at a trade deadline? That wasn't directed entirely at you. Just used your post as a launching platform for everyone else. 4 and 5. As well, hope Springer plays everyday down the stretch and they don't lose anyone else to a major injury or else you're looking at more ABs for Tapia and Zimmer! So yeah kind of nice to have some assurances and depth, which most World Series contenders have. The ask for the starting pitcher market is high, where even the Angels are wanting heavy prospect capital in return for Syndegaard. There are also 5 teams still on the hunt for SP and the bidding war continues. Like, its weird that it is being attributed to Atkins' incompetence and inadequate understanding of what is needed for the team to succeed versus how the market is shaping up Again, I am sure the depth SP/depth OF is being addressed or attempted but if Cubs are asking Moreno for Happ + Smyly + some prospect to equate the value, does that constitute as reasonable? What if, then, Jansen gets injured (also injury prone) and we have to depend on Collins as our back up? Isn't that the same scenario as Springer going on IL and having Tapia/Zimmer play CF?
