So we know the pen is a shitshow. What are the potential moves Atkins could make at this time? Will it be strictly pen help or is will he pull the trigger on a starter? Who will he move? The potentials acquisition pieces as I see are as follows (excluding teams from the AL East which I assume will never consumate a deal with us currently). I am only looking at arms:

David Bednar, RHP, Pirates, : He will be costly. He is pre arbritration so controllable until 2026.

Paul Blackburn, A's, RHP: pre arbitration and controllable to 2025

Madison Baumgarner: Why not take a shot? He's pricey but only owed $14 million in 2024.

Brad Keller, RHP, Royals: 4.37 era in 16 starts, arbitration eligible in 2023. Maybe get him on the cheap, Atkins style

Mike Clevenger, RHP, Padres: tj surgery last year, bounce back year, free agent after this year so a complete rental.

Blake Snell, LHP, Padres: He can be gotten for the right price, bring him back to the al east and let him wreak havoc on the Rays:cool: Owed $16.6m next year

Lou Trivino, RHP, A's: This is more Atkins style. Gives up hard contact so he'll fit right in with our pen.

Alex Colome, RHP, Rockies: Can still throw hard, ground ball inducing, put him in the pen with Yimi and they can be friends.

Steve Cishek, RHP, Nationals: 4.60era! Maybe get him on the cheap. Free agent after this year.

Daniel Bard, RHP, Rockies; He's an oldie at 37 but can be gotten on the cheap.

Mycal Givens, RHP, Cubs: strikes out a bunch and walks a bunch; I think Atkins is all over this guy. He will be a rental.

Jose Quintana, RHP, Pirates: If you know, you know. Yeah, he might get rocked in the AL east but....Rental for this season.

Frankie Montas, RHP, A's: The guy we all wanted. Where there's smoke there is fire. Pending his health he could be perfect for us.$5m arbitration eligible in 2023.

Luis Castillo RHP, Reds: Atkins has to take a run at getting this guy. Short series with Manoah, Gausman and Castillo...we can go all the way.

I think one or more of these names is a real possibility. What do you think?

Castillo. He would slot into a wild card series rotation. He would shorten the amount of innings we would need to use relievers. And we would have him for next year.

We also need one other depth starter as well.

Relievers… nastiest stuff., don’t care about control. Control is insanely overrated with relievers unless they also have options. Even then, I’d rather just hope that next year we do a better job of creating our own.

Bard and Gyvens?

I don’t think Atkins is looking to bag the elephant this year. He might just go conservative and with middling arms for the pen and be done with it. Wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t move Jansen or Kirk. He may go mid tier dumpster dive. Edited by Omar

It depends on where they are at the deadline but if there is a decent chance we don’t make the playoffs, i think we’ll go big.

That was the situation and response last year. It would be illogical to not do it this year as well.

If the Angels sell, then Syndergaard seems like he would be a possibility. He’s lost about 3-5 mph so he’s not the same guy but probably still good enough to slot in the bottom end of the rotation (behind Manoah, Gausman, and hopefully an improved Berrios) and shouldn’t cost much.

As far as the relievers, look for any relievers with walk issues and hard contact issues but still strike guys out. Atkins loves those buy low types.

Add Pablo Lopez? Just saw somewhere that we are interested.

Atkins would have to give an arm and a leg plus.

2 more years of control after this. Almost our entire window.

For sure but what are you willing to part with?

If they think they can contend next year, maybe they want a catcher? Jansen and Martinez plus any pitching prospect not called Tieddeman?

I don’t want to give up any pitcher who could contribute next year.

Joe Jimenez - Detroit

Tyler Kinley - Colorado

If I’m Atkins I’m definitely targeting relievers and probably bench depth. The offense/defense starters are legitimately fine and with even half of them starting to track back to their career norms or projections …fine.

Starting pitching….unless the perfect trade scenario manifests, I don’t think they really target anything here. The top 3 of Berrios, Gausman and Manoah will be relied upon, Stripling is the de facto 4 and has been fine, and will probably continue to be fine. The 5 spot is a problem but we all know Kikuchi is going to get another shot at this once his whiplash “injury” heals.

Improve the bench and the pen by dealing from strengths (Jansen) and cutting bait (Tapia and however many crap relievers deserve to be punted) and the team looks immensely better without taking anything away from the core.

Quintana, Robertson and Ortega. Cheeeap adds all kinds of length. I thought Kinley was done?

Yup, just saw that about Kinley. Too bad, he could have been a nice add

Joe Jimenez would be an ideal fit.

i would try ohtani trade .. dont mind to give up guerriel jr and biggio for him

Angels will not do it; you can give up the entire farm and I still doubt they'll do it.

Their owner has little interest in winning, he has two superstars and they fill the seats - that's all he cares about.

Not to mention, any trade involving Ohtani will involve an elite pitching prospect at the minimum.

In all seriousness though, they should be trying to get Ohtani if the Angels are willing to trade him.

They'll have to give up a lot more than that though, and will have to be willing to extend him at 30 years old on a massive contract

I'd definitely try and trade for Soto. The Nats are a garbage franchise, we could probably roll with him in the middle of the lineup for the rest of this year and next and then trade him in the offseason for a bigger haul than what gave up.

Acquire Soto trade Vladdy

Trade Vlad+ for Soto!?

Let's just dump some overrated prospects for Soto (they don't need someone on a similar timeline like Bo anyway) and then in the offseason after we win the World Series we can trade Soto for a different package of overrated prospects.

Hopefully you prospect junkies can go three months without jerking off to a stellar Top 10 list but a WS trophy should hold you over for a few months.
