If you pull a report on all hitters from July 1st last year to today, with 100 minimum plate appearances and then sort by OPS, the best hitters in baseball over that time were:

10) Aaron Judge

9) Rhys Hoskins

8) CJ Cron

7) Brandon Belt

6) Paul Goldschmidt

5) Juan Soto

4) Mike Trout

3) Bryce Harper

2) Taylor Ward

1) Danny Jansen (also first in wOBA)

It's not just a small sample size anymore. He had an absolutely atrocious start to the season last year, and an amazing finish.

He picked up where he left off from last year.

So, can Blue Jays management, please do the following:

1) Stop batting him 8th. This is a heart of the order bat. Somewhere between 3-5 would be great.

2) He needs the Salvador Perez treatment. When he's not catching, he should be the DH. Batting four times a day isn't that exhausting. I'm sure he can handle the workload.

3) Lock him up. He is our catcher of the present and future. Trade off Moreno for a position that we actually need.

Can't wait to see what he can over a full mostly healthy season now

Yes. He should be hitting ahead of Gurriel and Chapman. Catchers don't all have to hit 8th. I mean, he's not Pudge Rodriguez or Buster Posey all of a sudden but still...

When Kirk catches and Springer is in CF, yes let him DH

Keep Moreno and Jansen. Then trade Jano when Moreno is good to go and Jansen's value is at his highest.

uhhhhhh this is gospel

and the projection systems agree now

pull up his Fangraphs page and look at the projections

like, this sounds crazy but there might be a decent chance that he's PROBABLY better at hitting than Gurriel and Chapman, and POSSIBLY even better than Teoscar, Kirk, and maybe even Bo..............

I would say something like:

99% chance he's a better hitter than Chapman

90% chance he's better than Gurriel

50% chance he's better than Kirk

30% chance he's better than Teoscar

5% chance he's better than Bo

He's been elite since May 1st of last year. His April was horrendous but I think the wRC+ since is in the 170s.

He was like 92 wRC+ in May last year and then amazing since. Problem with recognition is some of those months last year he barely played, because of the injuries. And then another one this year.

People forget he was a bat-first prospect coming up. I think he spent a lot of time refining his defense and learning the pitching staff, plus working through injuries. Now he can focus more on his offense.

nonononono

he was a defensive prospect / possible backup catcher type

who got new googles in the upper minors and became a bat first prospect with poorly rated defense by random minor league measurements

who debuted in the majors and was surprisingly good defensively

but forgot how to hit and became a defense first player

and now finally he is putting at all together, just in time for his physical decline to begin

I started playing The Show 22 the other day and Danny's not even in the starting lineup. They got Kirk DH and Collins catching.

All aboard the trade Moreno train. He can be one of the pieces for Soto.

Where did that come from. Didn’t try to find origin. Is it like one of those trade for Mike Trout things from 5 years ago?

Some idiot speculating on Twitter. It's never going to happen.

Oh I'm definitely on board for this. Ship his ass out of here we've a pennant to win!

Can we please stay on topic? Clearly Jano's not going to get traded for Soto so keep that s*** out of here!

Something will have to give between Jansen, Kirk and Moreno and if anyone is going to go I think it's going to be Moreno.

-Jansen could be a Top 5 Catcher. 2 more years of control after this one.

-Kirk's offensive numbers in the minors were elite and Steamer projects him for a wRC+ of 131. There is a reason the Jays didn't bring in another bat in the offseason and that's because they think he's good enough to DH for a World Series contender. Add in his elite framing numbers (better than Jansen even) and the fact that he's only one year older than Moreno and he might be the most underrated player on this board. 4 more years of control after this one.

-Moreno is a Top 10 prospect.

For a team trying to win a World Series it seems to me like keeping the guys who are producing for the big league club while trading the prospect to add to the big league team makes the most sense.

If Moreno lasts through the trade deadline though then I think it's anybody's guess as to who they'll keep. But if we move one of them at the deadline I think it would be Moreno.

Moreno makes the most sense to move. Jansen and Kirk are already a solid combo behind the plate, both are still young, under club control and both still have some potential. If the Jays are aiming for a World Series in the next year or two, you want Jansen/Kirk behind the plate, not Moreno.

As well, we have seen with some young catchers that they take time to start producing at the MLB level. Not every catching prospect is a Buster Posey, Wilson Contreras, Wil Smith, etc., that comes hitting right out of the gate + handle a pitching staff well. Also, Moreno holds the most value in trade to a team rebuilding, more than Jansen or Kirk. For the Blue Jays, Jansen and Kirk hold more value because they're trying to win a Championship.

Yeah prospect/young player development isn't always linear and it's even less so for Catchers. Look at Jansen. We don't want a Moreno/Kirk combo where Moreno struggles for a year and a half while we are trying to win a World Series.

Not sure the Nats would even want Moreno. Ruiz has a .344 OBP, looking like a stud on both sides.

Pearson, Tiedeman, Orelvis, Bo is probably what it would take.

I think I would move Kirk over Moreno, personally. I just have no faith in Kirk's body to hold up with that much weight on his knees behind the plate. But I'm also not in a rush to move any of them at this point.

I see no reason to rush this decision at all. I believe all three of Jansen, Kirk and Moreno have potential to be legitimate all star quality catchers overall, the club may as well wait a bit to see who really ends up distinguishing themselves before making the decision to move one of them.
