I don’t see how Josh Bell improves the situation. He’s a full-time DH. Charlie can barely fit a C/DH into the lineup

At this point the Jays need a LH bat that can slot into the middle (or top) of the order. If it's a DH, then it's a DH. Benintendi would probably be the best option since he can play the OF, but other than him and Bell, I don't know who else is out there (that is realistically available). If the Jays don't mind trading prospect capital, then Reynolds would fit the team's needs perfectly (LH, CF), but it would be costly given the years of control he has left. Maybe Ian Happ?

With the roster as is, Kirk should be the starting DH and backup CA. That is such an obvious setup that it actually irritates me that the team doesn't see it. Jansen should be playing a lot but it seems like neither catcher catches back to back days, which is stupid.

Haniger if the M's don't turn it around soon

My apologies in advance my fantasy team is just about dead last in HRs so I picked up Jansen, with my usual fantasy luck that means his HRs are pretty much gone now until I drop him again :(

Haniger is a righty and currently injured. Reports say he may be back in July.

Winker would be a nice addition as a LHH

I don't care that neither catcher catches back to back a lot. We have 2 above average catchers. Doing a 3/2 split is fine. The issue is It's like a 1/4 split as to whether the guy who's off DH's or not and it should be at least 3/2(3 days DHing, 2 day not). Jansen catches 3 times, DH's 1, 1 day off. Kirk catches 2 days, DH's 2 days 1 day off of every 5 games. I'd probably like to make it more but Springer needs to DH once per week it seems and they often get Vlad or someone else in there another time. Catching is hard on the body so 4 out of 5 days in the lineup isn't terrible. This 3 out of 5 that they're consistently doing is brutal for 2 of our better hitters.

1st and 3rd one out foul pop up to the catcher on the first pitch, so predictable. Again I'm sorry...........

Let's put Tapia in at DH instead of Jansen. That makes a lot of sense. Need his superior bat to ball skills in the lineup as much as possible.

He and Teo nursing minor hip injuries, apparently...

Well… good thing there’s an offday tomorrow

Minor hip injuries? That really narrows it down. Hopefully not out too long.

Both guys has oblique injuries and now they both have hip injuries…

Teo and Jansen confirmed siamese twins

They're joined at the hip.

So looks like the Jays won't be playing Kirk and Jansen together regardless, only as late game PH's. lol

Saw a tweet on Sunday that basically said expect them both to be in there Tuesday. There's no concern about having to force Espinal to catch if 1 of them DH's, the risk is you lose the DH. If Jansen pinch hits in the 6th and then gets removed(which he was) and Kirk gets hurt then Jansen's already out of the game.

I'd also guess that wasn't a question, but more of a signal from Charlie to Espinal that he's the emergency catcher phrased in the form of a question. Not really something designed for anyone to say no to. I'm sure Espinal likely knew that already anyway.

Who tweeted that? Dude, I know the rules of the game, lol. And this was a question to Espinal... *Charlie Montoyo asked Santiago Espinal if he'd strap on the gear in a pinch. He was game, having taken some practice reps back in 2020.* Unless Montoyo's yanking Shi's chain, I don't know what to tell you.

I'd guess it was more of a formality than anything. Could you honestly picture Espinal saying "Nah, I'm good. I won't do that if the team needs me to"? 'cause I couldn't.

I don't get this either. I also think it's far less risky to DH one catcher and start the other one behind the plate because the chances of both of them suffering injury in the same game and having to come out of the game in this scenario can't be very high. The guy catching that day has to have a greater chance of injury due to the hundred plus projectiles being tossed in his direction, and losing the DH isn't the end of the world as you simply pinch hit for him if necessary. In the unlikely chance you have used up your bench players you just have a pitcher stand there and keep the bat on his shoulders. Any of those scenarios are preferable to having Espinal donning catchers gear and hoping for the best.

There's no doubt in my mind that Montoyo is not going to use the two catcher lineup often. Not only does he like to use the DH spot to rest regulars, but he just had a game where Tapia was the DH, so clearly he and/or the organization want him to play everyday. If we see the two catcher lineup more than once or twice a week, I'd be surprised given the way Charlie has operated so far.

Yes it's literally a question, but like deadpool said it's not a question anyone would ever say no to. It's likely more of a rhetorical signal to Espinal that Jansen is pinch hitting so be aware that if Kirk gets hurt you're moving to catcher. Espinal would already know he's the emergency catcher, having taken reps 2 years ago just in case. That's not something that you don't plan and then randomly figure out during the game.

As for not knowing the rules you inferred they wouldn't use they both at the same time because of a tweet that talked about Espinal being the emergency catcher. That's not a risk if 1 of them DH's so I don't see how that tweet was relevant to whether 1 of them might DH.

I get that, my point was about if they'd play together as often as folk think. It was brought up in this thread copious amount of times. I'm good.

The good news is the 1 game we needed Kirk in there as DH for his 2 HRs was the game Charlie did it for. Hopefully he saw that and it tilts him in the direction of doing it more often. We lose yesterday if Jansen starts and Kirk is on the bench.

Since May 1st of 2021 to today Danny Jansen has the 3rd highest wRC+ in baseball behind Trout and Harper. 100pa minimum because f*** sample sizes.

Sure, they'll move him to the bench.

That's the only option. You can't have 2 catchers playing in the same game! THAT'S CRAZY!
