It's also an anomaly to take 3 of 4 in New York followed by a sweep in Boston, and take both halves of a doubleheader, regardless of the teams involved.

Can't bitch about the negative anomalies without acknoweldging the positive ones.

I've also acknowledged the positive anomalies on this board along with the negative ones. Some posters/homers on here get all pissy if you criticize one thing about this team which is ridiculous.

The reality is that this team has been inconsistent throughout most of the season. We can all acknowledge that. There have been times where this team looks unstoppable and then other times where it's been complete frustration. Every team goes through their ups and downs during 162. Some more than others.

Like BigCecil said in his last post: even 5 straight wins after the Angels series, the Blue Jays are just holding onto the last wildcard spot. It's always tougher for a team to play catch up as the season keeps winding down. If the Blue Jays were more consistent during the course of the first five months of this season, they're in a better position maybe leading the Wildcard by 5 or more games or leading the division. In that case, losing a series against a sub. 500 team in September isn't as magnified.

Jays lacking in win totals because the pitching has not been what was expected, and the absence of depth which is certainly on the F.O. (and possibly issues getting players to sign with TO during COVID). Heck, I remember harping on and on in the offseason about the pitching depth issue, wanted Taijan resigned.

On the offensive side, roughly on par with last season overall.

Didn't we just have a discussion a while ago on how the front of this rotation with Gausman and Manoah has been better than what Ray and Manoah did last year? Even Stripling stepping up and contributing. Otherwise yes Berrios, Ryu injured and Kikuchi becoming a dumpster fire have been a negative. Plus, I recall some homers on here saying the Jays bullpen is really good!

FFS, my apologies to the positive police. We have 75 wins and are in the last wildcard spot. I expected this team to have more than lasts years 91 Wins. We are a bad stretch or a good stretch from in or out. I get it. I said we are hot the last 20 games which is acknowledging all the wins against NYY and BoSox etc etc etc. I'm not bitching. I was pointing out the LAA series as an anomaly as an example. Great, thanks for pointing out its also an anomaly to sweep the BoSox at home. I had no idea. In terms of perspective its also an anomaly to win 5 straight after that LAA series, and we are still only in the last wildcard spot.

I have to think some of your concern is based off this rather poor expectation. The Jays pre-season projected win total (per Fangraphs) was 92 wins, which was projected to be 3rd in MLB. In reality, the Jays are projected for 91 wins (same as TB and Seattle), but perceptions are thrown off because the Yanks jumped out to an unsustainable pace and other teams like Seattle and TB are out preforming their projections (and we also now have 4 teams projected to win 100+ games). I'm not sure how many wins you expected from this team at the start of the season, but it sounds like that # was too optimistic and now you're pissed at this team, when in reality, they are performing right at the expected level.

I'm simply questioning whether the criticism (ie, this team is steaky, or this team's offense isn't good/consistent enough) is even true, of whether that's simply an individual's perception of what's happening. A lot of people get really upset when their perceptions aren't reality. Do you have any proof they've been less consistent than other teams in general (or even amongst teams with similar records)?

I wasn't making comparisons with last year. Pitching has not been what was expected when the season started. Jays were the odds on favourite to win the division. Even if the pitching has been overall better than last year, it was expected to be, and better than it has been.

I'll try and make it better. I watch a lot of ball too. Other teams. Can't get enough. The Jays near misses and flubs are heightened for many because of 1. Expectations which in part they themselves set and 2. We have 75 wins and are fighting for our lives for the final wildcard and 3. Missing the post season by 1 game last year still fresh.

If the Jays were atop the Division by 5 plus games like LAD or NYY for example, many fans would be much less concerned/disappointed about anomalies, like a sweep at the hands of the LAA at home, for example.

I was posting that we basically run the board offensively statistically at this point in the season and the goal posts were moved for some reason, we'll see after game 162. I see them as a WC1 team, feel the Yanks still hold on. Again, that post about dumn people, wasn't directed at you, obviously.

The team really seems to be putting it all together right now. After a rough August overall capped off by tough losses vs the Angels I'm feeling a ton better about them. The rotation and bullpen has been great for well over a month now and it seems like the offense is fullly alive. September is going to be fun and I think we're getting to the point where those early season expectations are coming to fruition. Also f*** Odor

Yeah, f*** that guy... I agree, Jays got this.

Seattle's rest of season schedule is kind of a cakewalk outside of a few games.

2 more against the White Sox, 3 against Atlanta, 2 against the Padres, then a road trip to play 4 @ the Angels, 3 @ Oakland, 3 @ KC then finish up at home with 4 against Texas, another 2 against Oakland and 4 against the tigers. 4 off days sprinkled in also.

Hard to see them stumbling with that many games against complete garbage remaining.

I recall several occasions where the Jays stumbled against teams like Texas with a playoff spot on the line. A team with nothing to lose can sometimes be dangerous late in the season.

Angels are finally playing baseball of late and Oakland took 2 from Mariners the last time they faced each other. Royals also have been competitive of late (they took two from Rays)

Tigers/Rangers are kind of walkovers though.

Seattle has some fun ahead of them. Nothing compared to us of course but ya.

The reality is, all teams are streaky and consistently inconsistent. It's just that on this board, we watch the Jays the most often, and therefore have an observation bias that they are terribly inconsistent because we see nearly every single time they screw up.

Not sure of your point here?

People do it all the time. They discount the highest scoring game or 2, for or against and say 'without those the offense really isn't that good'. Or without those the pitching really isn't that bad.

It's dumb because good offenses typically have a 20 run game or 2 a year, bad pitching usually gives up a big score a couple times. So you have to count those in, as every other team in history also does.

I mean if you want to eliminate the 28 run game what do you replace it with ? Just take away 28 runs? You can't do that, because every other team has a highest scoring game. So maybe take away 6 or 8 runs because the Jays highest scoring game is real high? OK. Take away 8 runs and the offense is still good.

Hahahaha... if that's what he's getting at, he's the very type I'm referring to as dumn. :P

Properly, you do a student's t test or some other test for outliers, and if the test assesses a result as an outlier, you disregard the result.

Anything less than earning the 1st WC spot is a disappointment, for me anyway. And the trade deadline was a bit of a joke. Right now the season, for me, is 5/10.

Gun to your head you have to give White or Kikuchi 5 more starts this season and you have to let them go 5 times no backing out

Who do you pick
