So Lopez could be up for a possible Chapman or Bichette IL stint or maybe they are getting ready for the 13 pitcher limit? When does that go into effect?

 

So the options to come are

 

Chapman to IL

 

Bo to IL

 

Zimmer DFA

 

Send pitcher down for the cut on Monday, but need an extra INF this weekend with Bo and Chapman limited still

It all makes sense then. Throw Casey Lawrence into some games this weekend to eat innings while we are crushing the Yanks in blowouts and then send him back down on Monday so the Otto Lopez era of Toronto Blue Jays baseball can begin.

Chapman has wrist inflammation but is in the lineup. Bo out though with foot contusion. Lopez on the taxi squad. Probably if neither can go tomorrow

The Jays were very close to signing Verlander apparently. Had the same offer on the table as Houston.

They signed Gausman on Dec 1, and were still offering 25 million to Verlander in mid december.

 

Then Kikuchi and Chapman were added for about the same amount, just 12m each in mid March.

 

It's kind of an interesting thought exercise to go back and consider if the Jays would even have traded for Chapman ( no way they would have signed Kikuchi at that point for sure).

Atkins was reported to be one of, if not the most active and aggressive GM in the offseason, so this doesn't come as too much of a surprise to me. I wonder how many other close deals there were? In a parallel universe, there is a Jays team that is fielding Jose Ramirez and Verlander.

Maybe, though if Lopez is already with the team and both Bichette and Chapman banged up, I dont think they carry 3 catchers and they'll just activate Lopez and punt Lawrence.

Yeah, Kikuchi seemed like a last ditch signing to me, based on what was left. I'm sure they had other preferences, and settled for Kikuchi when options and time became limited. Would have been interesting to see what the offseason (even though I was happy with the results) would have been like, had there been no lockout.

Thanks for figuring out the timeline. Yeah I’d guess Jays probably don’t get Chapman or Kikuchi if Verlander signed. Wonder what they would have gone with… Vlad at 3rd? Groshans? Biggio until Moreno takes over 3rd?

 

I think we can all agree Chapman has been a great rock at 3B for us after the uncertainty in 2021

Probably Espinal at 3rd, Biggio at 2b and the rest largely the same I would guess. never know what course they would have taken with Biggio's injury time early one, maybe Lopez comes up sooner ... maybe Taylor ... hard to say really.

 

But if that was the case, arguably the lineup might not have suffered at all. Espinals D at 3b isnt a massive drop from Chapman, though it's not top tier elite like Chappy for sure.

 

I think if they had signed verlander, maybe they chase Ramirez that much harder and land him and he'd be playing 3rd, Espinal at 2b, Biggio and a pile of prospects gone. so hard to speculate.
