Said it before, will say it again. It's not a question of who to keep and who to trade, but a question of which player returns the highest value in trade. Sorry to deflate anyone's hardon.

If pitching rich Miami wants to give us Lopez for Moreno, and the best deal they can find for Jansen is Madison Bumgarner + a good prospect or two, what do you do?

I think this is a bad take, Would you trade Vladdy or Bo because they would bring a higher return? No,of course not, and no, you dont trade the best player of those 3 catchers either . I would keep Moreno as the main guy, and Kirk to fill in for off days and DH others . Like someone else said, add to Danny J with more prospects to bump his value.

If they can turn Jansen into a LH CF or SP, then it's the best way to balance out the roster.

You could also trade Moreno for one.

Well the Marlins are ran by a woman so I think you have to make the offer to see if she'd actually do it.

The only catchers it would make sense to trade at this point are either Jansen or Moreno, and I don't think the Jays trade Moreno for anyone that would be realistically available right now (obviously if Soto becomes available at the deadline then you change your mindset). I've said before, I think Jansen is the one to move, and I feel like he's the one the Jays do end up moving this winter. The team trading for Jansen is going to be an established contender or a team that plans to contend, so there would be less of a market for him than Moreno, who any team would trade for. I don't see a rebuilding team wanting only 2 years of Jansen.

Houston seems like a perfect match there. They usually have pitching depth and they probably have a need at catcher.

Grichuk had negative or zero value though. Toronto basically fleeced the Rockies for that prospect...

Precisely. I was surprised Atkins was able to move him at all. Also, don't underestimate the 5 mil saved. That could be used to buy another prospect by taking on an excessive contract, or go towards signing a reclamation RP next year to a one year contract.

I just wanted to clarify this one so no one thinks I'm sexist you guys. I didn't mean that the woman running the Marlins would trade for Grichuk because he's good looking or anything like that. I just think you have to make the call to see if they'd trade for Grichuk because most women don't know anything about baseball. Just wanted to clear that up. Thanks.

Come on Dude.. I am talking about a Cody Poteet, Castano, Garrett, Popp or something like that.. Being aware we would probably need to add something…

Of course I would trade Bo for Juan Soto. The worst thing you can do is get attached to this player or that player and make them off limits for making the team better.

Do you think Vladdy stuttered or was it the interpreter who stuttered?

My bad everyone. I totally went off on the wrong person. Plus I was pretty cranky last night. Should have been in read-only mode. That's not my style.

Maybe a little Wry N Ginger involved also? ;)

There wasn't really $5 million saved because the Jays sent almost $10 million cash to the Rockies in this deal. To me it looks more like using cash to get an interesting prospect back in return.

I think if they non-tender Tapia next year they do save like $6M

My bad. For some reason I had in my mind Jays saved about 5 mil. But Laika made a good point in regards to possibility of non-tendering Tapia.

The Jays were very close to signing Verlander apparently. Had the same offer on the table as Houston.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/insider/story/_/id/34101192/from-tommy-john-cy-young-form-39-justin-verlander-unprecedented-return-dominance

"Houston was at the top of the list," Verlander said. "As negotiations started going, they kind of fell off. Some other teams really started to show a lot of interest. I would say that the leader was probably Toronto. They were great. And I talked to George (Springer, his former Astros teammate now with the Blue Jays) a bunch. They were very proactive to the point that when I signed with Houston, I made sure to let them know that I appreciated it all. Ultimately, when it came down to it, Houston had the same offer. It was all kind of ballpark between them and Toronto, and New York (Yankees) was kind of always just a step behind."

Obviously would have meant not signing one of Kikuchi/Gausman, not sure which.

I'm pretty sure Ray or Gausman was at the top of the list. If Verlander had been signed, Kooch would not have been.

Verlander had some big question marks in the offseason, cant imagine the Jays wouldve signed him with the expectation he'd be at the top of the rotation, like they did when they got Gausman.

I think he wouldve been in place of Kikuchi.

Yeah and that would have worked out spectacularly. Ah well. I still think Kikuchi can turn it around and give us similar production to what Matz gave us last year.

Extra 12.5 million to Verlander probably means they don’t trade for Chapman, or have less flexibility at the trade deadline. Who knows

So Lopez could be up for a possible Chapman or Bichette IL stint or maybe they are getting ready for the 13 pitcher limit? When does that go into effect?
