TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Author Posted March 22, 2022 Basically just buying out his two arb years so they can avoid that process. He had a 9.5M arb projection for this year so this is them paying him more than he likely would have gotten in these two years. Hopefully that helps their case for a longer extension down the road.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 This is not the term I was hoping for.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Just to avoid arbitration. Could be really good for next year when he would have asked for like 18 million after he puts up a 5 war 2022.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 Yeah this is just for cost certainty over the next two years and avoiding arbitration. Since Chapman is a Boras guy I fully expect him to bet on himself and test free agency, so hopefully he has two 2018-19 type of seasons here.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Author Posted March 22, 2022 I wish every Jays player had the same agent Berrios has. Could lock up the entire roster on a 200M payroll, lol.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 You know he will do everything in his power to have his best two seasons ever so he can get max paid like Semien. I love these deals.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 This is not the term I was hoping for. Jays may not even have wanted a longer term. They've got a bunch of high priced Contracts to try and work out, and Orelvis or some other should be the cost controlled 3B of 2024 and beyond.

AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 This is a stupid deal for the Jays. Risk Paying a bit more than he likely would have gotten. Can't cut him, if he tanks or gets injured for 2023. Reward Maybe save $1-2 million if he puts up crazy numbers.

Are you really expecting Matt Chapman to be such a negative asset in 2022 that we would want to drop him in 2023? I don’t see it

The Jays have clearly made an internal assessment that Chapman is going to beast this year.

I don't see a scenario where Chapman is a dumpster fire this season. The only way this doesn't work in the Jays favour is if he has another major injury.

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 If Chapman has the same percentage bump in his HRs from going from Oakland to Toronto as Semien he'll have 49 HRs. I'm sure the stadiums has a large part to it as does the lineup and where he bats.
InsideThePark Verified Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 The way arbitration works Chapman was getting a raise next year regardless so even a bad year would have seen him get 9.5 this year and something like 12 next year. So a 3.5 overpay and losing out on the opportunity to non tender if he’s a total disaster. If he had a good season he could easily have gotten 18, which the current deal is a 3.5 underpay. And we avoid having to go to a hearing. So it seems fair to me. Possible overpay, possible underpay, lose out on the small non tender chance, gain goodwill of not having to s*** talk him in a hearing

We were never going to buy out any free agent years. Boras doesn't do that.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2022 Posted March 23, 2022 It's nice to not have to go to arbitration against our stud new hunky 3B and say mean things like "he strikes out a lot and he hit like .200." That would hurt his feelings and I want him to stay.
