Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Author Posted March 17, 2022 Not to be too hyperbolic but Guerrero-Ramirez-Bichette-Chapman would be one of the greatest infields ever assembled. Ya I was listening to Moresi tall about that infields potential to be one of the best infield today. I was like that would be one of the best infield of all time lol.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Not to be too hyperbolic but Guerrero-Ramirez-Bichette-Chapman would be one of the greatest infields ever assembled. The 1912-14 Philadelphia Athletics infield of Stuffy McInnis, Eddie Collins, Jack Barry, and Home Run Baker amassed 79.3 WAR over that span, which is roughly 7 WAR per player, per season.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Author Posted March 17, 2022 I doubt we're extending Teo, Gurriel or Chapman. Bo and Vladdy will command north or 30M AAV in their extensions. We're at 160M give or take right now. I know Ryu's 20M and Grichuk's 11M will be off the books in 2 seasons, but that only covers 1 of them. If you give extensions to all of those guys, you run a payroll north of 270M likely. With just Bo and Vlad, it's likely 220M. So if we're not extending all those guys because we're going to be financially strapped, we will need young prospects to take their place no? Otherwise there will be a drastic drop off in terms of talent a few years from now. We are just in the beginning of our contending window, let's not make shortsighted moves that will make this era only last a few seasons. The whole difference between AA going all in for 2015 was because of the ages of our core players. We're in a completely different situation right now.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, don’t have to keep every homegrown player

Give this man some credit. It took him no more than nine minutes to look that up. Unless he had this factoid ready in preparation for an opportunity to display it.

Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 The thought of adding Ramirez to this team is boner inducing, but I don't think it's needed right now, especially at the rumored cost. I kind of want to see if Biggio can bounce back, or if a juiced Espinal can do what he did last year but with a touch more pop in the bat. If either (or both of) those guys have strong years we'll be glad we hung on to all of Moreno, Martinez, Groshans or anyone else Cleveland might want.

As soon as Espy gets to 5hr they’re going to be waiting for him with a piss cup lol

vaff Verified Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 There's no such thing as not needing Jose Ramirez. There’s also the argument that the Jays are at the point of the win curve where additional wins mean the most. As noted in this article about the Chapman trade: Crucially, Chapman also gives a boost to their chances in an extremely tight division race. With the their acquisition of Anthony Rizzo, the Yankees vaulted into a tie at the top of the AL East – before adding Chapman, we gave both teams a roughly 40% chance of winning the division. That division title is crucially important – in the new playoff format, the winner of the East is likely to receive a first-round bye, while the second place team braves a three-game Wild Card series. It’s also important to stay ahead of at least one of the other two division winners as well, and that too looked like a tight race, with the Astros and White Sox both projected within three wins of Toronto. In other words, the Blue Jays are at the point of the win curve where additional help matters most. With so many evenly-matched teams at the top of the AL, every win could matter. The Blue Jays just found a way to add roughly three of them. The other AL contenders are surely furious at Toronto’s good fortune. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/oakland-capitulates-and-toronto-capitalizes-in-chapman-for-prospects-swap/
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Would you do this deal? Biggio* Gurriell* Kirk Martinez *in the deal based on Baerga saying Biggio is in the deal and Cleveland is interested in Gurriell. This was a pretty even trade on baseball trade value

Biggio* Gurriell* Kirk Martinez *in the deal based on Baerga saying Biggio is in the deal and Cleveland is interested in Gurriell. This was a pretty even trade on baseball trade value I'd prefer not to give up Gurriel as he is a regular contributor to the team. I know his year over year numbers don't look great but he finished the season hot in Aug/Sep being more patient. It would hurt the clubhouse too. Perhaps there are some middle tier prospects we can offer

This was a pretty even trade on baseball trade value I’d do it before the Chapman acquisition, it’s a fair deal. But now would rather keep these assets for in season deals for the inevitable needs that will arise.

Biggio* Gurriell* Kirk Martinez *in the deal based on Baerga saying Biggio is in the deal and Cleveland is interested in Gurriell. This was a pretty even trade on baseball trade value On paper yeah but right now not so sure. That is a huge upgrade on 2B (4+ wins) but also makes Jansen the 100% catcher until Moreno is ready and Grichuk a full time OF, representing two downgrades. So Orelvis Martinez gets burned and in the short term the MLB team gets better but not immensely better. And depth goes from decent to shaky. I would probably do it if Cleveland could add some bit pieces that would make Toronto's roster better constructed in the immediate term. Not sure they have those pieces though.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted March 17, 2022 Posted March 17, 2022 Donaldson, Tulo, Travis, Smoak🤣 Donaldson, Tulo, Travis, Smoak - I think the first three played 160 games between them while Smoak replaced EEs production in an amazing year. Would have been interesting if Tulo and Travis weren't glass Olerud, Alomar, Fernandez, Sprague - hmmm Olerud, Alomar, Fernandez, Molitor - This infield played together 2 games in Philadelphia in October 1993. 22-23 fWAR in 1993 with Fernandez only there 2/3 of the season, and Molitor getting a huge hit for being a DH most of the time. There it is. Greatest infield of all time, estimated 26 WAR if they played together for a full season John Olerud Paul Molitor Tony Fernandez Roberto Alomar

This was a pretty even trade on baseball trade value Maybe I'd do it, as long as the Jays could get Conforto to sign and take Gurriels OF spot. Otherwise we'd be making two holes in order to fill one hole that might not even be a hole. "That's what she said!"

It's like being on a permanent vacation.
