BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Spotrac had them at 333. That puts them at 401 with the tax they owe. Congrats Mets! That's ludicrous. They are actually a worse team on paper than last year too..lol. This reminds me of the Evil Empire days of the last Yankees heyday back in the early 2000s: no finesse, no strategy - just fielding the absolute best team money can buy. It's been awhile since baseball had a villain like this. A lot of people are going to love rooting against the Mets.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Maybe when it’s not the Yankees, people will be more pissed off. From another site- Just to put the craziness of these megadeals in context, here is a complete list of position players age 34 and above to post 2.5+ fWAR last year (where 2.5 fWAR means "a little above-average"): - Paul Goldschmidt. - Jose Abreu. That's it. There were 14 pitchers with 2.5+ fWAR last year at age 32 or higher, out of 54 total. That means that about 75% of the pitchers to exceed 2.5 fWAR were 31 or younger. There were 10 position players with 2.5 fWAR at age 32 or higher, out of 89 total. The means almost 90% of the players to exceed that threshold were 31 or younger.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Bogaerts could quite easily be a below average player entering his age 36 season at which point he will still have 5 years and over 127 Million left on his deal.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 You can't even really get honest analysis of baseball contracts anymore because every baseball journalist is so far up the union's ass that they praise every big deal as a bold win for the working class.

As I’ve said, I’d assume they’re looking at it as dead money at that point. I think you can see a diff between these teams like SD and Tex, they are running it as a trophy asset, and a team like Jays that’s running it as a business first. I mean I’m not whining about it but it’s just what it is.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 I mean of course I’d like the Jays to sign Rodon for 6/180 and someone else but since they’re not going to be like that, it’s good they stay away from dead money contracts
wamco Verified Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 From another site- 317 players received 250 PAs last year. 257 (81%) of those were 31 or younger. Here are the number of players to receive 250 PAs, by age: 21: 5. 22: 6. 23: 17. 24: 20. 25: 32. 26: 19. 27: 43. 28: 29. 29: 32. 30: 28. 31: 26. 32: 20. 33: 12. 34: 11. 35: 7. 36: 3. 37: 1. 38: 2. 39: 2. 40: 0. 41: 1. 42: 1.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 (edited) Seems like Lopez is the guy they'd move bc he only has 2 years of control left and they are cheap. They would no doubt want Kirk or Moreno for the same reasons but I wonder if Jansen and Espinal would get it done for Lopez. I posted a trade earlier where we also chip in Macko and Richards and get Sanchez who has a good batted ball profile which the Jays FO loves. There's got to be something there we could work out. You keep mentioning Espy, who's our backup SS in this scenario? Nvm... I've seen your answer. I doubt the Jays trade him unless it's an overpay, and I find that highly unlikely. Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Correa lol... well that'd be nice. That dude is going to get massive money.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Nimmo would have helped. Keep seeing the names drop off the board. Are we now into dumpster diving mode for mediocrity like Conforto? Imagine seeing that contract term for Nimmo and this is the first thing that pops into your head. I didn't even want him for 5 years let alone 8. The only signing I would have liked to see the Jays do at the prices being thrown around was Verlander.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Guess the players won the CBA agreement after all. Unsigned players threatening to make their own camp because teams refused to pay for free agents seems like ancient history now. I think the Mets, Rangers and Padres are playing the long game for the next CBA negotiations. By the time that rolls around the owners will request nine years of control and get it lol.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Re: Espinal. I don't know why people are fanboying over the 24th man on the roster so much. 1. He's completely replaceable given the depth this team has. 2. You don't trade him just for the heck of it. You trade him if a good deal is to be had. I would have thought this is to be assumed, but people are talking like the options are trade him for a C prospect or DFA him. I hope this clarifies the discussion around one of the top 5 most expendable players on the roster.

But who are you fooling into giving you something worthwhile for Chris Taylor lite? There are dumb teams but they’re typically already filled with .390 slug versatile infielders
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Mets are currently slated to pay a CB Tax of about $67MM on top of a $322MM payroll. If they're done.

Spotrac has them at 332 which would put total payrol at 401. I wanna believe a team can spend over 400 mil and arguabley not improve on what they were the year before..lol. I could maybe even argue they aren't as good...lol.

Between Biggio, Merrifield, Barger, and Lopez we can replace Espinal without much worry, if that's how a trade shakes out.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 9, 2022 Posted December 9, 2022 Did anyone see the MLB Network clip where they were talking about players that were 275 lbs (this was after the Judge signing, as he's like 283 lbs or something). They said there's only been one player over 275 lbs and over the age of 37 to hit a home run at the MLB level.....and it was Bartolo Colon! I can't seem to find the clip, but it was hilarious.

Mark McGwire, sans PEDs is Judge's fair comparable with respect to body type. Not friggin Bartolo Colon. Also, how many 275+ pound position players of any age has there been? I agree that Judge will fall off a cliff. But if this was supposed to be some kind of predictor as opposed to nothing more than a fun stat, I don't know what to say.

I believe it said there have been like 10 players who have played over the age of 37 who were also 275 lbs+ and out of those 10 players, only 1 of them hit a home run - and it was Bartolo Colon (it didn't say how many of the 10 were hitters). So it was a mixture of facts that were also funny Dick. I took it as a joke, but also a little serious as there's simply no precedence for this.

I'd be willing to bet Frank Thomas was pretty close to that weight at that age when he was playing. I know his listed weight never went past 240, but.... yeah I could see him near 275 Frank Thomas is about the best case scenario for Judge through his 30's most likely, which would be pretty well worth the contract. 4 of his 10 seasons where injury riddled, the other 6 were full time. 262 Hrs .276/.389/.515 triple slash.

He was still great then but I remember by the end of that season he could only pinch hit (though he had no DH rule). If Judge followed that pattern he'd have 5 great years, one half great season and then be done.

It would be pretty risky for the team to place all of their eggs in the Barger basket. There is a good possibility he will struggle greatly to begin him major league career both at the plate and in the field. I don't that aside from Barger that any of those players are very suited to play the left side of the infield (although with how poorly Bichette fielded in 2022 it's possible all of the previously mentioned players might not be any worse).

Done at 35, however I am sure that is pretty typical. Delgado was done at 35 or 36 too. I have to think Tony Clark was way heavier. Can't see a 6 foot 8 guy only being 205. Good chance Judge is done at 35 but only because half of players are, even great ones. Wow. If you look at when guys had their last healthy season when they were the guy they were at 30 it's scary A-Rod - 34 Cabrera - 33 Pujols - 32 Prince - 28? What are they doing signing guys to these contracts? Are there some data points that say it's worth it? Am I only cherry picking the worst? Seems some organizations, like Houston, maybe Boston have just said f***-it, we aren't touching this stuff. Maybe Toronto is there too explaining the inaction.
