I was taking a look at the Mariners stats and it's pretty shocking that they are actually in a playoff position. For all of the talk of their pitching, it's average or below by fWAR, ranking 16th in the league. They are also decidedly below averge defensively and on the basepaths at -4.6 and -8.9, respectively.

The offense is a tick above average, but they get there with a piss poor .229 batting average. Anybody with complaints about the Jays offensive approach should watch the Mariners. It's hard to argue that this isn't just a .500 team with an extremely easy schedule. Next year I can't wait to get a bigger piece of those s***** West opponents.

That is really interesting. If you just look at the rotation, pen and lineup - they certainly 'look' like a very solid team. Thanks for posting Grant.

Whenever we need Boston to win....they don't.

Honestly i am just hoping we are within 4 games of the Yankees by the time they play them in the end of the month. That at least gives us a chance.

It's interesting that you picked baserunning and defense to pick them apart, because the Jays are worse than both of those numbers. Also, 16th in the entire league isnt really a good comparison since they dont need to compete against the NL for a playoff spot.

In the AL their offense is 5th by wRC+ and pitching is 8th by fWAR. Combine those two and it's not surprising to see them right in the middle of the playoff hunt with expanded playoffs. It's kinda where they should be.

The Park Factor makes the hitting look a little worse than it really is and the pitching a little better.

Plus fangraphs really hates Marco Gonzales and Flexon for their low k rates. It is basically treating them as replacement players.

And arguably the Ms 2 best starters, Luis Castilla and Kirby have the least amount of innings so they are weighted less.

The team one would face in the playoffs has a rotation of Castillo, Kirby, Ray and Gilbert, the team going into next year will have Castillo, Kirby, Ray, and Gilbert.

So basically forget what fangraphs says about this team, it just hates the low k-rate of Flexon and Gonzales, and that doesn't matter for the playoffs, might not be true anyway, and doesn't matter as much next year with the full season of Kirby and Castillo.

I noted baserunning and defense because they can be important factors in a team's success. I wasn't making a direct comparison to the Blue Jays.

If you want to go that route, we should note that the Blue Jays are the best hitting team in the American League and are in a virtual tie for the #3 pitching staff with Tampa and Cleveland.

With a balanced schedule, an average pitching and hitting team like the Mariners would see their poor baserunning and defense be more exposed. Just look at the Chicago Whote Sox.

I cannot believe the White Sox are behind the f***ing Orioles in the standings, even in their weak-ass division. Crazy

To be fair, we played them like s*** and they beat us 6 out of the 7 games. But yes the schedule balancing next year will be enlightening.

Mariners also have the easiest schedule in the majors going forward lol. Good chance they get home field for the WC

If it's Jays @ Mariners I'm gonna be there for sure :)

If it's in Toronto I'm probably gonna be there

If it's Jays @ Tampa I sort of want to go and sort of don't

Their entire outfield is a defensive nightmare. Jimenez, Sheets, Vaughn, Pollock, Robert. They are all absolute butchers out there this year. No wonder Cease tries to K everyone.

I'm pretty sure Robert is an excellent defender, or was, but he's been injured a ton this year.

It's mostly just Vaughn being out of position lmao

CWS -39 runs defensively

Andrew Vaughn -22.5 runs defensively

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Sheets blows too of course. They have multiple DHs in the lineup on any given night.

Eloy has also played 30 games in the outfield (out of 67 total games he's played) and he's like, historically bad out there I'm pretty sure. That's a tidy -7 runs defensively in a third of a season.

Actually Laika's right, Vaughn is literally the worst defender in all of baseball (Juan Soto third worst, yikes!). He has a 124 wRC+ but only 0.3 WAR to show for it because he's a 24 year old full-time DH that happens to play the outfield. Also a brutal runner to boot.

It's the most poorly constructed team I can think of, in a long time. Like an old early moneyball team before defensive stats were a thing

? Moneyball teams gave up some defense for walks and power. These guys are like 14th in walks and 10th in homers. It's like a team designed before stats were a thing, not just defensive stats.

They are first in average I guess.... "Billy these are the Chicago White Sox... They lead the league with a .262 average in a time when league Average is .240, their flaw is they don't walk, hit for power or play defense or steal many bases."

lol Clevinger is so bad; 3 - 0 already for Mariners.

JRod's 26th HR and Suarez's 31st HR.

If he would pitch around those guys, the bottom half of the lineup is total dogshit, but he's giving them meatballs over the plate.

They have some contract/trade problems but still loads of talent. Interesting and oddly put together team.

Machado and Bell have been studs

Odd timing, but Alderson is stepping down as Mets team President.

Perhaps he has health problems again?

What's the deal with Soto this year (and even Guerrero to an extent)? The baseballsavant percentile rankings show that they are still elite in the majority of categories. It's not like they're experiencing a Bellinger type of collapse. So why are the results not matching what the underlying stats are saying?

Slashing 209/385/330 in 149 PA with San Diego. Crazy to see a hitter that good struggle that much. Everything San Diego touches dies.

Just polished off another 0-4 with 2 strikeouts and 2 weak groundouts

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. The majority of advanced metrics say he should be having another elite season. It can't be all .babip related, right?
