Ke'Bryan Hayes might not be good so this is a great deal for him

Agreed. There’s a real possibility of a Jon Singleton/Evan White situation here. Hayes might end up earning like 10x what he otherwise would have.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure this is a slam-dunk good deal for the Pirates. Outside of the 24 game sample in the COVID season, Hayes hasn't exactly shown the ability to barrel the ball consistently even if he does have good exit velos. Ben Cherington & Steve Sanders are running things there though, so you gotta give them the benefit of the doubt. And Hayes is very good defensively.

Also, this just makes the Jose Ramirez extension look so much worse. Young 3B with an okay bat getting $70M guaranteed. Arguably the best 3B in the league getting $124M guaranteed.

Just found the segment where David Samson is talking about Montreal hilarious. French Canadian or bust with those idiots there. Starts around the 10:10 mark.

Why is it assumed JRam signed the deal because he wants to stay in Cleveland, as opposed to wanting security against e.g., injury?

Because he could have signed the same contract with almost any other team after getting traded there. There might be five executives across baseball that wouldn't have immediately signed that deal. He probably could have actually gotten more somewhere else and, if an extension was part of the trade, it would have actually increased the value of the trade for the Guardians.

This post is smeared with "I went out on a date with a hot chick yesterday...oh wait she's not interested in a second date...well, she wasn't that great anyways"

I started pulling back on the idea of a Ramirez trade weeks ago when I realized how exorbitant the cost could actually be considering they'd be selling low on every player that was being talked about publicly.

It's fine if you think my comment is a bad take. It probably is. But I've seen dozens of athletes over the years be completely resistant to the idea of getting traded because they grow accustomed to the comfort and familiarity of the organization they've always been in. And then they get traded and fall in love with their new cities and realize what they were missing out on.

There's nothing really proving that this is anything different for Ramirez. He's a single 29-year-old that is heading towards the down-turn of his career, is the last remaining star from the young Indians core he came up with and is the only player making any money on a team where the most flattering assessment you can make is "they're probably a .500 squad with potential."

Well I wouldn't be surprised if he gets traded later this year, as you say he's likely a more valuable trade chip now than he was before.

Yup. He was touted as a great defender in the minors, came up and raked for 20 games in 2020 which was a surprise to just about everyone and now looks like a good defender with an average/below average bat.

Berrios being a recent example of a guy who was literally in tears when he was traded from the only org he'd ever known, and IMMEDIATELY seems to have fallen in love with his new team/city.

This'll be a steal for the Pirates. He's projected for 3 WAR this year, he'll be one of if not the top defensive 3B. He's probably somewhere between his 2020 and 2021 season, wrist injuries are a pain.

So with JRam and Ketel down, who is the new name we can start seeing posted all over the place? Guess the season has to get rolling

Agreed, he left after his first AB today injured, thumb/forearm strain, though. I like the extension.

Pretty sure you would like anything the Pirates do.

Brian Cashman just announced (for some reason) that Aaron Judge turned down a 7 year 213.5 M contract extension that would have started in 2023.

That's a lot of money for Judge's 31-37 seasons.

Yankees seem to like shaming their players publicly for some reason

Judge kinda deserves to be shamed for that decision. Not that it's anyone's business but his own, but still. Turning that down is stupid.

How long until the Judge camp says 'that's a lie...he never turned down that offer.'

How many of those seasons would he even still be an outfielder?

I agree he should have taken it if he wanted to stay.

It's just that most orgs don't release details like this for PR reasons. IYAM it probably lessens the chance he signs back at all now. Which maybe they're OK with. And maybe they want fans upset with the player rather than the front office when/if he walks.

They also still havent arrived at an arbitration # for this season. He wants 22m, they want to give 17m. Decent sized gap
