This really seems like a great price. Two years of great performance overall, and the Jays front office loves him since they've chased him twice so far.

For people who saw more of Gausman's games, was there any cause for concern with his second half dip? 2.57 FIP in the first half, 3.65 in the second.

It was mostly because of 2 back to back starts; 7/19 and 7/24. After those two he had a 3.00 FIP the rest of the way.

look at this fact

If you sign some constant like Max Schezer or Grienke, its good upgrade

But, sign someone who was super good just before Free agency is a lot of risky

Also, only thing I like Gausman is he is inning eater

I don't think he will win 14 wins this season, but we will see

I only see by stats

Dont be a J.P. Richardi. you remember how he screwed Blue jays right?

He only signed players who was 1 year good and gave them 5 years contract

I think you mean J. P. Ricciardi.

2021 30 SFG NL 14 6

2017 26 BAL AL 11 12

2018 27 TOT MLB 10 1

he only had 3 10 + winning seasons

whenever he was at baltimore orioles, his Era was more than 4.2 per season

he had 4 seasons with 150 innings or more pitches which is only good point because he is inning eater

But, I still think he is good for national league.. not American league

you will see.

Aaron Judge, Otani, Semien will hit many homeruns against him

Well....steamer has him projected at 3.4 WAR 3.77 FIP and........13 wins. You win!

Are you a donor at fangraphs?

Ray basically got the same $$$ and term as Gausman. But I guess Gausman + the comp pick is the better way to go. In terms of "value".

Ray has that optout as well. So if he's good you only get him for 3, if he loses his control again he's there for 5. Haven't seen how the money is paid out yet. It could be heavily front loaded which makes it essentially a 3 year high aav deal, with 2 safety net years for Ray included.

Basically Robbie Ray vs. Kevin Gausman + Yimi Garcia + Compensation Pick.

Ray also gets an opt-out while Gausman had better predictive metrics across the board.

Not surprised the Jays preferred Gausman, all things considered.

MLB radio this morning

FWIW a former GM with "sources" said:

The Jays had Ray and Gausman as equals in desirability and were negotiating with both concurrently

Jays offered Ray 5/110

Ray WAS interested in staying but they wanted to continue to meet with other teams

Ray's agent told the Jays they weren't rushing to sign and still had to meet with other teams including the Angels

Meanwhile Gausman and his agent wanted to sign before the CBA expired and were willing to take 5/110 from the Jays so they all agreed

Ray then got an offer for 5M more from Seattle, knew the Jays were out and decided to take Seattle's offer and not wait around any longer

So yeah a bit like EE/Morales if this is all true

Makes sense. Wouldnt fault the FO then.

Exactly

Can't risk losing Gausman to someone else while Ray waits and you risk missing out on him too

This indicates to me that Ray only wanted to be a Blue Jays if that the most money he could get on a contract can't blame the front office you snooze you lose their offer was legitimate. The Blue Jays went after Gausman and signed him leaving Ray out of the mix.

Kevin Gausman says that the #BlueJays’ young core, commitment to winning and the resources they can offer him all helped lead him to Toronto.

“This is the team that I think I’m going to win the most with.”

@bnicholsonsmith

Kevin Gausman says he was close to signing w/ #BlueJays each of the last 2 winters, so he wasn't surprised when Ross Atkins reached out

Gausman then started asking players who had played in Toronto & "one common denominator was that everyone loved their time with the #BlueJays"

I agree with the wife comment but here are a couple short videos

Here is a pitch by pitch summary of him working late in the game

And this one is comparing his 2020 season to his start of the 2021 season

Determination really does pay off lol. I guess it really is a good look when a team liked you before you broke out and were willing to pay you top dollar once you did.
