The upcoming offseason is going to be the most important one in the Shatkins tenure. There's clear needs, 2 guys having career years that are FAs that are begging for extensions. I get the need to try and find those hidden gems in the pen, but I think this teams needs to get past that and really sink some money into proven talents. They don;t all have to be elite arms of course, but we can;t see another season of ******** guys like Dolis and the parade of replacement level garbage behind him.

 

yes, injuries to Merriweather, Phelps and the guy they wanted to be the closer really hurt, but every team has pen injuries every year. It needs to be better.

 

Hell, Merriweather is still 4th on the team in reliever war and he only pitched 4.1 innings, Phelps is 3rd after pitching 10 innings. Kinda tells you how much the rest of the pen sucks. #1 and 2 are Romano and Mayza. Cimber has been pretty much the only solid addition.

 

Also, not that it needs to be said, but Montoyo has to go - that would improve the pen by 2 or 3 wins alone.

Yeah, a move to the pen probably bumped it up a few, but even with the Jays out of the pen he only averaged 95. Whatever arm program he is on needs to find its way here.

White Sox have an unreal bullpen, and at the deadline they add Kimbrel and Tepera.

 

Jays have a f***ing s*** bullpen and add Hand and Soria.

What a tease. Should have known considering how bad they suck in close games and in the 7th inning or later. How do you teach clutch? This team is a massive disappointment.

 

You can't teach clutch because it's not a repeatable skill. It's moreso about mindset - not panicking, having a short memory and not putting too much pressure on yourself. It's possible to learn it from experience.

 

That, and it helps to have a manager that would actually use the pen properly that doesn't keep giving away runs late in games.

2 more seasons, but I wouldn't say "stuck" is very accurate.

 

He's not an ace anymore but he's still a solid starting pitcher overall. Still second in WAR on the Jays staff, 1st in wins, 2nd in ERA (3rd if you count Manoah but thats a SSS).

 

If you're trying to dump him you better have a pretty f***ing good replacement lined up, or at the very least Ray should be locked up first.

So you're basically saying there's no possibility a 30 year old has better conditioning than a 22 year old, just because one guy is younger? I don't agree with that.

 

Yes, these guys are all top athletes. But that doesn't mean they all work equally as hard or take care of their bodies the same way.

 

No. I think Bo and Vlad, for example, worked very hard this off season and take care of their bodies pretty well. Youth just makes it easier. There are obviously guys older that are in great shape. Lots of younger & older players are having strong post all star break results. I just don't understand why they would be less fatigued from a grueling season than our younger players. I think its too convenient to say they don't know how to handle a long seasons fatigue factor.

Bo and Vlad have basically played every day this season. I think with a little more time off it's possible they may be able to avoid becoming burned out in the future. Semien has much more experience with how to deal with playing every single day as he's been doing it for years.

Hendriks ascent to elite reliever is a very cool story. I remember him saying that after he moved to the bullpen he eventually decided he should simply try to throw harder and as a result saw his velocity jump a ton. Given that he already had great control this made for a deadly reliever combination.
