I think when he said that he meant "It was shocking to see them start the season so well after they were the worst pitching staff in the history of baseball in 2020."

 

Obviously 2020 was a shortened season and there was no way they were actually that bad but his claim was probably results-based, which is a pretty defensible argument imo:

Buntoyo valued Panik more than Tellez (played Panik at DH some times) and now Breyvic more than Espinal. I wouldn't take his lineups to mean anything about talent. He's playing the wrong guy, but whatever. Valera is a switch hitter so hitting from the left side against a righty magically makes him the better option.

Even further to that Espinal is actually hitting righties better than lefties this season, with a 129 WRC+ vs righties vs a 101 WRC+ vs lefties. This dumbass platoon situation that has popped up recently is weakening the club offensively and defensively.

At least Joe Panik was an all star 6 year ago so Charlie being the idiot that he is would have a bias there, but to value Valera over Espinal makes no sense. Valera has lasted much longer with the org than anyone could have expected. I wonder if this is the org more than the manager. Otherwise the only other reason is that he thinks Espinal can't hit righties to the point where any LH bat is better. That seems a little extreme, but then again it is Charlie.
