This just screams of the Syndergaard trade again. I hated that one and I was right. I absolutely hate this one. Got fleeced terribly for a pitcher with 1 year of control while giving up 12+ years of control on two top prospects. Either Berrios sign for 5+ years, or we win the World Series, otherwise it’s a fireable offense for Shatkins IMO.

There are several reasons why this is a poor comparison, but I’m way too tired to explain.

This is a stupid post...

I like the trade! Jays are back in Canada for the first time in 2 years. It's a display of confidence to the team and to the fans.

Sure, under normal circumstances I'd say it's not the time to go all in, but Berrios could be a game changer. Starting pitching was the biggest weakness and this strengthens the rotation significantly.

Yeah, and you may also like banging cheap hooker for a short while... but you're not going to like the STDs she gives you the rest of your life. This is a short-sighted and really poor trade overall.

Quite surprised when the news first broke and I still don't like the trade.

But whatever, hopefully it works out for the Blue Jays.

Starting pitching was the weakness?

Anybody else get South Park vibes from Tabler?

I get Owen Wilson vibes.

20 years ago, the "dumb casual" fan would have been fine trading unheard of prospects for veteran players. Now with so much access to MiLB/prospect info online, the pendulum has swung the other way. It's all about mindless prospect hoarding for....reasons? Some rag ranks a player in the top 100 and all of a sudden he becomes untouchable.

This thread is about 60/30/10 split of people who hate the trade, are kind of neutral or see both sides to it, and like it. But of the f***ing dumbest comments in here, 100% of them belong to the hate category. Can you people who hate it so much even explain exactly why you hate it? Ineligible submissions:

1. "Cuz Dickey"

2. "bUt tHe DoDgErS dId"

3. "prospects are good, trying to go for a playoff spot is bad"

The Jays likely overpaid. But in the context of this day, maybe they didn't. Also any player with a slash line where the OBP is bigger than the SLG reminds me too much of Otis Nixon. I don't need to see that s***.

Now let's look at it the other way. This FO has confirmed they are willing to do what it takes to attack. Will it work in 2021? Maybe not. But it could work in the coming seasons. The Jays are recognizing that the "contention window" has opened and are attacking early. A crappy FO would have let the Rays pick up Berrios and then the Jays are way in the hole for 2022 trying to pick up 2-3 SP. Prospects can always be replenished. The Jays have locks on practically all their position players for the next 3-4 years. A good draft next year can net them a Martin or two or better waiting in the wings by 2025 when they might actually need them. For all the whining about 2013's screwup, it only took two years for some of the best Blue Jays memories for people under the age of 35 to occur.

How much would it take to extend Berrios? $120M+?

I just can’t shake this feeling that Atkins knows his number and is comfortable with it. This front office really does their due diligence when it comes to acquisitions and probably talked to his agent during the process to get a ballpark estimate.

Why'd you stop caring?

Mostly because they can't stop changing the goddamn rules, ball or equipment. The copious amounts of woke ******** don't help.

This is the type of thread that is going to be brought up for years. I prefer to remain neutral. I love all the people who either love it or hate it and are taking a stand.

Well the QO does give us more leverage to re-sign him after 2022

I've seen you've posted this in another, thread. You can't offer a guy a QO if you're acquired via trade.

I am in no way equating this deal to the deal for Dickey, but to say that Berrios has been "great for years" and Dickey was only good for 1, is definitely disingenuous. That trade was a disaster and this trade appears to be an overpay, but Berrios hasn't been an elite pitcher. Hopefully he becomes that in Toronto.

Berrios is ranked 25th in MLB??? 18th overall since 2017 to like, literally right now. He hasn't had a Cy Young season, but you sir are very wrong. Many of you are wrong. He was the best available SP available in trade and the Rays certainly bartered up that price as they were involved. The market was expensive, sucks for Toronto, but it is what it is. What do you consider elite, there's only a handful of them, Berrios is in the next tier?

That's the word, Manoah today, Berrios tomorrow.

Berrios, Ray, Ryu, Manoah that's a good group, put nate in the Pen, it's looking good. Just need a long winning streak now .

I think what Nate does in the pen either way is going to be huge good or huge bad. If he has command and can get swing and miss 1-2 IP, thats a massive X factor.

In 15 Cecil was unhittable, & Osuna and Sanchez were pretty strong. Had Hendriks too. We needed all of them and after Cecil got hurt, it stung us hard against KC.

What puzzles me given the price paid for Berrios 1.5 years, which implies they want to take a run at the 2nd WC this season and hedge against Ray loss in 2022 to make a run next yr, why the FO would not have been even more aggressive in addressing the pen woes earlier?

Its not easy pre-deadline to do, and they did bump it with Cimber and Richards etc, but man did we lose a lot of ground via the pen. It just seems inconsistent in terms of approach.

Exactly what I've been saying. They half assed the bullpen in the offseason while letting them lose a lot of games for us but now we want to push everything in for the 2nd half?

It's why I wanted to wait until the offseason to make our real push. Not a fan of this wish washy approach but at least the product will be better on the field for the time being.

You are not factoring in all the injuries to the pen early on.

At this point I'd be fine with Berrios, Ryu, Ray, Stripling and mystery meat as the starting five. Put Manoah and Pearson in the pen. Limiting their innings being one factor and team need being the second. I know that 99% of the time a starting pitcher is more valuable than a reliever, but for THIS particular team it's gotten so desperate that the downgrade in using Matz over Manoah is more than offset by having ideally lights out guys in the pen available in every close game.
