Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Giving up 2 prospects of that caliber for a non ace or star player is just absolutely unacceptable.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 AWFUL trade. They’re not even going to make the playoffs and should be sellers. What the heck are they thinking? you know Berrios will be with us for 2022 right?
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Sucks to give up on Martin already... and SWR makes it hurt way more. On the other hand, how many prospects did we trade at the 2015 deadline and how many actually turned out to be major leaguers? Like 1? Matt Boyd?
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 This is definitely part of a bigger plan to go all in on this year with Ray and Semien with vladdy having a mvp year. I foresee more trades from the farm in the next few hours. We still need bullpen help and a real 3rd baseman... They seem to be thinking the return to Toronto will light a fire under the team and they will go on the huge run that they need to go on for their win loss record to regress to where it should be based on run differential.
thatoneguy Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 you know Berrios will be with us for 2022 right? Trading that much for 1.5 years of Berrios with the very real possibility of next year being a lockout is garbage unless they have an extension planned with his agent.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Yep And cue the apologists. Like clockwork.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 This would have been a little easier to stomach if they had a guy like Rogers also coming back. It's almost an extra kick in the dick to know they probably aren't in on guys like Rogers or Donaldson anymore since if they were, they'd probably have expanded this deal. I know this is an intelligent front office but I'm shattered right now at losing Martin.

Some reactions here are hilarious...it's not that bad./...team still has a deep prospect pool and a very good tea, relax chicken little. Def seems a steep price though but im excited for how good this team can be,.
itaos Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 There was a quote about Atkins not wanting to play poker in trades years ago. Hasn't changed
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 IF they actually make the wild card (they won’t), you’re talking one game at the Trop…we know how that will turn out. The rays are not unbeatable...stop whining jesus. Anything can happen in one game. You know we have berrios another season...right?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 First Martin drops to the Jays at #5 then gets traded in what appears to be a lopsided deal. There's something there. I suspect the deal was made in part to keep Berrios from the Rays.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 For a guy with a career ERA north of 4 Stro netted Simeon, don't see the need to get caught in a bidding war this year.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I don't mind this trade. You can't keep every prospect. Hopefully they are in talks with Berrios to sign an extension!

Just because the org has a wealth of high-end prospect talent does not make it acceptable to give up two prospects at this level for a pitcher of Berrios' caliber. Losing the prospects is fine, but you need to get adequate value.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 This is absolutely a JOKE of a trade. Instead of going hard after free agents, we decide to give up 2 amazing prospects. f*** Shatkins if the return is 1.5 years of Berrios. The Padres traded for so many friggin pitchers without giving up a return like what we just did.

I literally stated it was a huge overpay in this thread...

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Author Posted July 30, 2021 I think the part that I hate the most about this is that they're going all in on this team. Their playoff odds are way too low for that at this point. They've pissed away too many winnable games. The realistic best case scenario here is a one game Wild Card even if everything breaks right. And Berrios probably isn't even the guy you're going to pitch in that game anyway. Like someone said, a lockout next year could even essentially make Berrios a rental. This is probably the most puzzling move this front office has made so far.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 Ryu Berrios Ray Manoah Matz/Stripling piggyback?

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 So 1.5 years of Stroman gets Kay and SWR 1.5 of Berrios gets Martin and SWR What???
Ray Verified Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 For a guy with a career ERA north of 4 Stro netted Simeon, don't see the need to get caught in a bidding war this year. This a little misleading. Berrios was mega bad in his first season, but he's clearly not that pitcher. That one stint really drag his career numbers down. Since that point, 3.76 ERA. Not defending the trade, but still.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 The trade is an overpay. But we don't know what the Rays were offering. If they pulled the trigger how much whining there would be from fans about not doing anything. This is more about maximizing 2022's potential as it is about 2021. Imagine if the Rays got Berrios and we head into the 2022 offseason with the Jays needing to add 2-3 arms just to get to break even. That would torpedo the 2022 season during the "window of contention". It's not always about comparing what the Dodgers did. Scherzer's NTC significantly limits his trade value. Those are just the breaks. Just be happy NHL players like this place so at least the city gets first dibs on players like John Tavares lol

Who were you signing for that amount as a FA who's as good as Berrios (who also wanted to play for Toronto)?
