$125,000 max. If you sign a player for less you don't get to carry the savings anywhere...it's just unused. If you sign a player for more than $125,000 then you need to subtract the extra amount from your pool (Top 10 round total). Eg. 13th rounder is signed for $150,000, you need to find that extra $25k from your total allocated pool amount.

Thanks man. I guess signing a SR who may actually be a 'player' for $5K is better than signing me for $1.

Theoretically yes.

Exhibit A: Kendall Graveman

Senior sign and a $5000 signing bonus in the 8th round of 2013.

Edit - Chad Girodo was another senior sign that year in the 10th round. Never turned into anything but he had some nice minor league numbers and was able to make it to the major leagues.

Cal Stevenson was another $5000 guy in 2018. He was also in that Sanchez and Biagini trade to Houston for Derek Fisher.

His minor league numbers are solid. I bet he at least gets a cup of coffee in the major leagues.

Not even just theoretically. Boyd, Graveman and Romano were all these types of signings.

Boyd was 75K, Romano was 25K and Graveman was 5K.

Every little bit helps! I'm still holding out hope, Jays find a way to sign both Carter and Holman. Although it's likely a pipe dream, based on Farrell's comment.

So am I correct that the $75K we saved on Matt Svanson cannot be used to sign anyone else? The Jays just pocket it and us it to upgrade the batting cages at Rogers Centre?

I guess it's just a business and Matt Svanson has no leverage?

As I understand the rules, only rounds 1-10 have specific slot (bonus) values but for rounds 11-20 if a player is signed for more than $125K than the excess is charged to the team's total slot pool for rounds 1-10 and could impact the signing of players in these first 10 rounds

It's not so much as them "pocketing" it. There's no slot values for Rounds 11+, there's just a maximum of 125K.

Not every amateur prospect is worth $125,000 so it doesn't make sense to pay them all that amount.

Plenty of players in that range will sign for nothing just to get a chance at playing pro ball.

Ah - I didn't realize it was a max of $125,000 and not a 'slot value'.

I guess I'm just a little surprised there aren't players available in Round 11-20 that are 'worth' $125K. Seems odd our 13th round pick is only 'worth' $50K, but our 15th round pick was 'worth' the full $125K.

I guess we can really like Matt Svanson and like him better than Garrett Spain, but Spain has more leverage (I assume this is a SR. v. JR. situation) so he gets more cash.

I would imagine that there are so many players "worth" $125,000 this year that supply massively outstrips demand and therefore some of them told teams hey, I'll sign for less because I really want to go pro.

They can use the money to sign some undrafted amateurs I guess

That pretty much confirms Holman isn't signing.

That's what I thought too but it actually depends on if they can get the other unsigned picks in the top 10 under slot.

They're only 100K over budget right now even after the Carter signing.

The 100K they'd already saved and the nearly 300K in 5% overage allowance covered most of Carter's cost.

If they can find a way to save 500K between Tiedemann, Juenger, Gregory, Larkin and Cooke, they can potentially afford Holman.

Of course, that would prevent them from being able to go overslot on any of the other 11-20 guys and you have to assume Bucknam at least is an overslot guy.

Tiedemann is probably going to go overslot too. 18 year old JuCo arm that's projectable.

Farrell himself said that it seems unlikely they sign Holman. It is what it is. It was a nice pick if somebody like Carter wasn't going to sign though.

Also, they may have planned to pick Rutkowski with their 20th pick but chose Holman since he was still on the board as a backup plan and just signed Rutkowski as a free agent right after draft. So no loss there.

Not the Jays, but a big one. The Pirates saved $2M on #1 pick Henry Davis. This is where half of that went:
