Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Damn, was hoping Trey would win it. Alonso came f***in locked in for that last bonus round, very impressive
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Damn Jo Jo whatever her name is with a rip after DJ Metcalf couldn’t touch it… 2m was enough of that though. It’s off
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 That was pretty fun. Baseball has it right with the Derby. Wish they created some other events and put it on the weekends.

5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 Gallo's pitcher might as well have been Dolis with the amount of time he was taking. Well, they're supposed to wait till the ball lands before releasing the next pitch... Hardly anyone was doing that, but Mancini's pitcher was the worst offender
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 they dont even show the hrs... espn ruin everything they touch my god I like the old format better. Brings more attention to each bomb. The time limit makes it kind of manic and takes away all of the attention from the majestic jacks. Manfred can't get anything right.
5ToolPhenom Verified Member Posted July 13, 2021 Author Posted July 13, 2021 I can't believe Vegas had the odds so wrong. I really didn't understand why they had Ohtani as such a heavy favorite. I didn't see him excelling in this format. I put 20 on Gallo and 20 on Alonso. Pretty easy money. Wish I would've went harder on it in hindsight. Gotta give props to Buck Martinez, he called Alonso to win it

If they had the old rule, Ohtani ends up with like 1 home run since he was drilling everything into the ground or hitting line drives initially before he started getting hot. Although yes, the old rule made you pay attention to and appreciate every home run. There has to be a middle ground somewhere, but I don't trust ESPN to ever find it.

They have had big viewership increases with the new format and when it first debuted it was considered a big success. The problem this year seemed to be mostly on the production side or maybe a loosening of some of the rules about not throwing the ball until the previous one lands. But the rule about not pitching until the first ball lands was stupid to begin with because it penalizes moonshots! Honestly, the whole thing would be solved with proper TV production. It was like they just didn't know how to do the camera work right. The event is probably fantastic live and in person.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 For convincing his client to sign this year and next year prior to the season. He's locked in at 5.5 next year. If he just would have signed this year he would been in line for comparable numbers what the best have got in their 2nd arbitration years, which is way more than 5.5 mil! His MLB contract is pocket change when compared to his endorsements. But yes, he is vastly underpaid in MLB "for now".

Yeah based on everything I've read on social media, the HR derby was getting great reviews, especially the Ohtani/Soto round. I think this format works, they just need to figure out a way to make the actual home runs more visible, but that's more an ESPN issue.

It was guys taking a pitch or two between each swing and there was no drama as you couldn't mount a comeback if you started slow. It was boring as f***. Manfred got it right to change it. The first year was in Cincy I believe and Todd Frasier came from behind won it on home soil. It was incredible to watch. I also thought they got rid of the stupid rule about waiting until the previous ball landed. The broadcast crew even spoke about how Mancini increased the pace because he knew he needed more swings to beat Alonso. The format is great - the TV production failed a bit last night...although overall I still really enjoyed it. My young boys thought it was amazing.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 Didn't the Mets coach bean him with one pitch?

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 What the heck are you talking about? He was talking about the celebrity softball game, haha. They aired it again after the derby. I actually watched the whole thing, it was pretty fun. The girl he's talking about (JoJo Siwa) is apparently a TikTok star or something but she was balling. Looked like one of the best players out there.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2021 Posted July 13, 2021 In lieu of a home run derby, we could introduce Baseball Curling
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
