RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 According to Craig Mish the Jays have traded for Corey Dickerson. Also picking up Cimber. Panik and a minor leaguer heading the Marlins way.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 We need another outfielder? Is this a salary dump for the Marlins of Dickerson in order to get the reliever? Does this mean Dickerson will become our 4th OFer because we are trading Gurriel or Grichuk for a starting pitcher?
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Stand alone deal is meh but it could just be just acquiring some assets to fill in some voids from a bigger trade?
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Author Posted June 29, 2021 I mean it IS an upgrade. The team is better with Cimber and Dickerson now.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 A low strikeout reliever and an outfielder who is currently on the IL I don't get it Panik gone is the only good news. Saving Charlie from himself.

Saving Charlie from himself. Dickerson is just a dump from the Marlins. Cimber is servicable. Not everyone has to strikeout 15 per 9. He gets groundballs and provides a different arm slot look out of the pen.

Saving Charlie from himself. At least Cimber is a low walk guy for his career. Wont come in and walk 3 guys in an inning like everyone else in our pen. And Dickerson is wayyy better than Panik who was providing nothing for the team.
AI9764 Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 And he keeps the ball in the park. Raises the floor of the pen by a solid chunk.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Cimber is a decent reliever and has 3 more years of control after this year. Acquiring him for what appears to be taking on the rest of Dickerson’s modest salary this year seems like a decent move.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Take a deep breath - there is no need to read into this so much. Loll... makes sense to read into it when Shatkins said get ready for some moves. It does make sense to add Dickerson's left handed bat as our 4th outfielder and then trade from a position of strength (Gurriel/Grichuk) for a good pitcher. It's happening... book it!
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Basically we get an upgrade reliever (not a great one, but an upgrade over the Carl Edwards Jr.s that we've been tossing out), remove Panik, move Biggio back to full time 3B, and have Dickerson as a bench piece (probably playing the OF whenever Biggio would have in the past...) We're replacing Panik's 76 wRC+ with Dickerson's 101 wRC+, and adding some needed bullpen help. Hopefully the minor leaguer isn't anyone of consequence, but I can't imagine that it would be considering the return.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 I think Cimber is a good fit with all our hard throwers. The lack of K’s isn’t concerning. He doesn’t walk guys, and he's very good at limiting hard contact, and extremely tough to barrel up.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Dickerson is outfield depth and a LHB that can pinch it and spot start (that's if he isn't sent to AAA, not sure what his options are). Cimber appears to be serviceable 6th - 7th inning type. Minor move that makes us a little better.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 I just saw Panik going the other way and it’s already a win. Don’t even care who the Jays got back.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 The absolute madman. Atkins did it. He finally took away Charlie's favourite toy. A++ move
mellowgold Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Do we know who the minor leaguer is? PTBNL I assume?
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Cimber is probably going to stick around for a few years, hopefully as the 6th or 7th best reliever in the bullpen for most of the time. If the acquisition cost was mostly just paying Dickerson for the rest of the season, then this is a nice little move. And Dickerson isn't necessarily a sunk cost RoS either.
RustyTrombone Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Author Posted June 29, 2021 Something interesting I noticed about Cimber, in 2018 when he was with the Padres he was K'ing over a batter per inning in 50 innings then he got traded to Cleveland and his K rate tanked. Pitch mix says he started throwing alot more sinkers and less 4 seamers and sliders. K rate hasnt really recovered since. Wonder if there is potential in him to K more batters with some pitch mix adjustments. Maybe Pete Walker can unlock some of that strikeout stuff again.

Cimber is a pretty big upgrade on (pick your worst current reliever). It's good to get a different look in the pen too. And guys like him who DON'T rely on wicked spin just got a league relative skill upgrade because of the new foreign substance rules (he didn't get better but a good number of his peers got worse; yes there is an assumption here, maybe Cimber used the sticky stuff and I don't know). Dickerson is also a pretty f***ing good hitter who has made himself into a playable left fielder. Capable of hitting .300 with power. A fantastic platoon option for the struggling Gurriel. Yeah, Dickerson's game is flawed but he's not a zero. Better at baseball than Joe Panik right now.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Chuckles is going to have to re-write his lineup card, since he probably had Panik pencilled in as the DH batting 4th for tonight...

Laika Community Moderator Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Sounds like the minor leaguer is RHP Andrew McInvale That's a legit "who?" guy from me. Late pick in 2019. AA reliever with lots of K's this year. Probably has some semblance of stuff.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 I think Cimber is a good fit with all our hard throwers. The lack of KÂ’s isnÂ’t concerning. He doesnÂ’t walk guys, and he's very good at limiting hard contact, and extremely tough to barrel up. We've had too many games where relievers have just walked the bases loaded. Having a reliever that's not going to give up the walks makes me happy. We're taking on 4 mil in Salary for Dickerson. I would have preferred to take on salary for a more useful player, but at least we got rid of Panik.
