TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Off-Day Discussion #4 Make at least three realistic trades that, in part or in full, help the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021 It's been a while but it's time for another off-day discussion. With trade season looming, let's get some ideas flowing on what kind of moves the Blue Jays can make that improve the team now (and maybe even in the future). Assume you've just been hired as the General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. You have full autonomy over your moves and you don't have to worry about things like payroll or how these moves will impact your standing with the team. In other words, all of these trades will only be evaluated from a raw talent and numbers perspective. - Make at least three trades. - Give some rationale for why both teams would make the move and how it would improve the team. - Be realistic. You're not getting Jose Berrios in a 1-1 trade for Samad Taylor. - Your trades can involve improving the future of the team and the farm system but must also improve the 2021 team in some way. - Show appreciation! If you like someone else's trade ideas, drop a "Thanks" on their post. - Feel free to throw in some rosterbation with your completed team after your trades are made.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 I’d love Cruz but prob doesn’t make sense for how they like to use DH (especially w/Springer). If he goes to Tampa though, that’d really suck
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Author Posted June 28, 2021 I wonder if the Orioles would be willing to part with Fry and Sulser and what it would take to get a deal done. Both have been lights out in the pen this year and both have a ton of control remaining.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Story Bard Toglia For Groshans Britton Van Eyk Rockies get a SS/3B of the future and the Jays get BP help and Story can fill in at 3B or SS with Bo going to 3B for the rest of the season Hiraldo For Graveman Swanson Bullpen help for the Jays, Mariners get a good young Minor league piece Biggio Van Eyk For Cease White Sox trade from a surplus to get a 2B/OF they need and the Jays trade from a surplus to get a SP long term they need
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Marlins get: Alejandro Melean Toronto gets: Yimi Garcia Veteran rental reliever. Toronto will need at least one and I doubt they want to pay up for them. Garcia should be useful but should not be too expensive. Melean is a low minors, low probability P prospect with solid stuff. Could sub him out for Luis Quinones or a number of other similar prospects. Twins get: Miguel Hiraldo Toronto gets: Michael Pineda and Taylor Rogers Toronto tries to get Berrios but settles for Pineda as the teams can't come to terms on the bigger deal. Pineda is a rotation upgrade at the time of the deal and has some upside. Pineda is an expiring contract. Rogers is really good, perhaps an elite reliever, and under control next year. Toronto is not happy about giving up Hiraldo but the pressure from BJMB posters for them to upgrade the pen pushed them outside of their comfort zone. Arizona gets: Leo Jimenez and Naswell Paulino Toronto gets: Eduardo Escobar Joe Panik has been replacement level. This is an offensive depth upgrade. I am seeing rumours that Eduardo Escobar may be getting traded to the White Sox right now but whatever, I'll leave this.

Just out of curiosity, who would you replace in the rotation with Pineda and what would you do with the guy getting replaced?
Laika Community Moderator Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 I like all of these moves. Just out of curiosity, who would you replace in the rotation with Pineda and what would you do with the guy getting replaced? Better than a coin flip chance that at least one of Ryu-Ray-Matz-Stripling-Manoah will be banged up by then and it's a moot point but if everyone is healthy and Stripling is still throwing the ball like he is it would be a tough call. You'd hate to move Stripling to relief in that situation. Because Manoah would profile as an elite reliever I think that's the move (Manoah to the pen) and I guess there are also some seniority considerations there. Huge upgrade to the pitching staff no matter where the bodies land. Imagine Ryu-Ray-Pineda-Matz-Stripling with Manoah and Pearson in the pen, ready to shut games down or backup a SP if they don't have it.
Ray Verified Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 (edited) They could also do what they did when they acquired Francisco Liriano in 2016 and move to a 6-man rotation. It'll allow you to manage Manoah's innings and keep on developing him as a starter if they don't want him in the pen. Would give Ryu an extra rest day (which he's usually performed much better with) Just need to sell it to Ray-Matz-Stripling. Edited June 28, 2021 by Ray

Stripling will do what he's told and Matz doesn't have enough clout in the organization for his opinion to matter.
BuffaloWings Verified Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 I'd keep the starting lineup as is, but you have to go get pitching asap. I'd go and get another starter and a closer. Trade 1: Toronto C Danny Jansen St. Louis CL Alex Reyes Trade 2: Toronto C-Adams P-Borucki SS-de Castro P-Kloffenstein 2B-Machado Colorado P-Austin Gomber
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 I would be calling up Cherington for RR, Howard or Bednar. I would offer one of our catchers, not named Kirk and some lower level prospects. Might also try to pry away someone like Anderson or one of the other backend guys.. We can get Trevor Story, Bryant and Stanton and we still won't go far unless we improve our pen and SP, which would correlate to improving the pen. I would also be blowing up the Marlins and Indians phones for one of their starters.. I wouldn't expect to get the Top guns, but both teams have really nice 4th 5th depth types with potential for more..

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 You don't think Moreno's worth Rodriguez and Bednar do you? Wasn't even thinking of him TBH. I was thinking of a package that included one of Jansen, McGuire or Adams
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 Wasn't even thinking of him TBH. I was thinking of a package that included one of Jansen, McGuire or Adams Yeah, that makes more sense.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 28, 2021 Author Posted June 28, 2021 Orioles catching is atrocious so maybe they bite on Fry or Sulser for one of the catchers as well. Severino is ass at framing IIRC and he's below replacement otherwise. Whoever they get can start now and backup Rutschman whenever he comes up.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 I expect Atkins to be busy, but I don't expect a major addition. He seems very hesitant to give up top prospects. I've pushed for Eduardo Escobar since last season, but that idea was borrowed so I'll throw out some new ideas. Ian Kennedy from the Rangers for Kevin Smith. They are starting Charlie Culberson on a regular basis. A major league ready infield prospect is a big need for Texas and Kennedy obviously fits with the Jays. Jonathan Schoop from the Tigers for Rikelvin de Castro. Schoop lost his job to isaac Paredes and has been moving around the diamond. He hasn't played a ton of third, but has plenty of arm. If we want to address 3B, we have to think outside the box. There are very few options. Alex Cobb from the Angels for Joey Murray. The Angels aren't ready to sell now, but it's only a matter of time. Cobb is putting up a career high in strikeouts and having a rather nice season, despite a bloated ERA. Andrew Heaney is another target from the same team.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Paredes was optioned to the minors, just saying...
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Paredes was optioned to the minors, just saying... Fair enough, but I still think they would move Schoop. It's too bad there aren't more 3B options.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Fair enough, but I still think they would move Schoop. It's too bad there aren't more 3B options. Who really know's whom is available yet, Stove's lukewarm at best? We'll see soon though.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 (edited) Mychal Givens to the Jays and Kyle Johnston to the Rockies. Get it done as soon as Givens is of the IL. taylor Rogers to the Jays for Nick Frasso and Anthony Kay. Shohei Ohtani to the Jays for Nate Pearson, Groshans CJ Van Eyk and Joey Murray. Edited June 29, 2021 by saskjayfan
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Raisel Iglesias is really good and was acquired by LA for salary relief in the offseason. I wonder what he'd cost.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Also, Fry has sucked post sticky, deals for pitchers will be last week as teams want as much info as possible. Jays will have Borucki and Merryweather back then. Barring a setback of course.

I feel like the Jays could get Givens cheap and Iglesias for a bit more and we'd be in pretty good shape if Borucki and Merryweather return. Noe Ramirez and a ptbnl was the cost for Iglesias in the offseason.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Miami Get: Joe Panik Andrew McInvale Jays Get: Corey Dickerson Adam Cimber I love when the minor leaguer is someone that I've never heard of! 24 year old reliever in AA. About the definition of a nothing prospect.
