Slyfisher Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 If Pearson was pitching to Yadier Molina would he still struggle? I wonder
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Take notes Tellez... thats how you knock it down at least...

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 The stuff looked like s*** lol. What? I think the stuff was fine, he couldn't actually locate his pitches into locations which would allow for swings and misses.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 While I agree it's likely mental I don't know if this is entirely true. A lot of higher end pitchers can get by in the minors with overpowering stuff and posting low walk rates. Look at Jose Berrios when he first came up. The command issues sometimes don't present themselves until the highest level. His stuff was garbage today. His fastball was 93-98 and had 20 command and he didn't get any whiffs on his slider or changeup. This was very discouraging start. He didn't get any whiffs, because he wasn't anywhere near the strike zone. He threw some good sliders that didn't get swings, because he wasn't getting any strikes with the fastball. The fastball velocity was fine. I think he was dialing the velocity back trying to get it over the plate. He would be better off letting it fly and throwing 98 down the middle and trying to get ahead rather than giving up the walks. It's one start. No one include Pearson is going to argue that his stuff was bad today. It all starts with fastball command.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Hopefully the casuals can stop talking about bringing Manoah up asap now. These guys need reps in the minors for a reason From what I've seen so far, Manoah has by far the better mound presence.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 I think the stuff was fine, he couldn't actually locate his pitches into locations which would allow for swings and misses. It did not look fine, it looked awful, nothing was biting.
King Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Fair enough. You guys are right. The command made the rest of his pitches play down.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 You can start to pick it up any time now Lourdes. That was 89 down the dick.
Jgarza868899 Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 You can start to pick it up any time now Lourdes Yeah he continues to suck. At least he didn’t strikeout, so that’s a positive
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Fair enough. You guys are right. The command made the rest of his pitches play down. What did he throw, like 90% fastballs? And something like 75% of those were balls. No reason for hitter's to offer at offspeed stuff for pitcher that can't find the strike zone and is constantly being 3-0.
Jaysareus Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Pearson will never figure it out Tabby. Not happening with that guy
King Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 A the same time I don't see how you can say his stuff looked great. I refuse to believe his stuff was good in a start where he didn't have a single whiff. There are lots of pitchers with no command who still get strikeouts. His slider, changeup and curveball weren't fooling anyone today. How can anyone say this looked great?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 You don't think we need to address our starting pitching? We have 2 good starters right now and a wild card in Matz. If you think we can go the whole season with this rotation and be a contender then I completely disagree. Also, it is highly unlikely our bullpen will trend how they have been for 162 games considering most are unknown scrubs and will be worn out by then So our pen is a bunch of scrubs, and our rotation sucks? We knew this coming in to the season, guy's are getting healthy and Nate's back(rough start today), you must have too high expectations in Matz, he's been a fine backend starter, nobody trades in May man, it's a long season. Also, Toronto will be in on a SP at the deadline if they get everything tightened up by than. So, who do we get in your scenario?
Slyfisher Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Well the anticipation and excitement for this game definitely fizzled out.. Hope the offence wakes up
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 2 BBs/9 in the minors for Pearson. 8 BBs/9 in the majors. Issue isn't command. Its getting him to pitch the same way in the majors as he does in the minors
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 The stuff looked like s*** lol. What? Yes, I digress... at least he didn't get hurt.

I said the stuff looked fine, not like he was offering up peak level Pedro Martinez offerings.

Scion Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Pearson has said this. Its not speculation You can have more than one issue at the same time. And unless Pearson made that comment about today's start specifically it is just speculation.

Its getting him to pitch the same way in the majors as he does in the minors Maybe he has underlying command issues which didn't show up in his minor league stats because he overpowers everyone but start to show up because he gets to the majors and no one is fooled.

Jaysareus Verified Member Posted May 9, 2021 Posted May 9, 2021 Pearson looks overrated. He was throwing tops 96 mph and couldn't locate his fastball at all.
