If Gurriel can't play 3B and any of Bo/Semien/Biggio get hurt, Panik or Espinal becomes a starter or Vlad is bleeding runs at 3B again.

If Gurriel can just play an okay 3B then if any of those three get hurt Grichuk becomes a starter.

It might actually be a big benefit. Grichuk >>> Panik or Espinal.

Yeah I agree with you. Thinking of it again this might be their solution to not having signed/getting rejected by the decent infield bench options in free agency. Just have a bunch of guys able to play multiple positions so Panik/Espinal are only deployed in specialist situations.

I raised the idea of Gurriel playing some 3B back in December

Link shows someone else raising the idea, Jim.

Why are you quoting/tagging me ya dumbass? It was the Iceman bringing it up, he's fine there for depth but we'll see him in the OF for the most part.

So it's not ridiculous anymore. Got it.

Anybody have any insight on Zululeta? Apparently the guy packs some heat (95-99 mph) and some decent secondaries too. Where does he project to start the season? Fangraphs says AA.

Not much more to add. Signed for $1.5M in 2019 then immediately had TJS.

I would guess they need to see him in spring before deciding. If they view him as a pure relief prospect then AA could be where he starts. He is 23, so not particularly young, and he has pro experience in Cuba. They might even send him to AAA to relieve. The AAA season is starting earlier.

If they think he can start then AA might be a bit aggressive.

Why did you say you "raised the idea" though?

This was one of the most pathetic dick stroking efforts I've seen on this board. Nicely done, Jim.

It flopped, just like ole man Jim's flaccid peen.

The Blue Jays used most of the international pool space they acquired for Kendrys Morales and Dwight Smith to sign Zululeta just before the 2018-19 signing period ended in June of ’19. They did so knowing he’d need Tommy John, which he had shortly after signing. Finally back in the Fall of 2020, Zululeta was topping out in the 94-96 at Toronto’s facilities in Florida. He worked with four pitches during his time in Cuba but it sounds like he only threw one breaking ball variation in the Fall. He’s really well-built and athletic, has a good arm action, and obviously has requisite big league velocity coming out of rehab. The rest is very hazy, but because of when he signed, Zululeta has a long developmental runway. He’s a high-priority 2021 eval. (Fall Instructional League)

Sounds like a reliever, not much info on him.

Per Ross Atkins on Blue Jays pitchers:

* Trent Thornton is "good to go" after elbow surgery;

* Francisco Liriano will be a bullpen option;

* Jordan Romano, restriction-free as camp opens after injuries affected him last season.

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins says "a good benchmark" for a younger starting pitcher, coming off of a shortened 2020 season, is around 160 innings for this year.

Atkins says the number of innings that are pitched is "a piece of the equation" that the Blue Jays evaluate.

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins: "The makeup of our 26-man roster is going to fluctuate a great deal."

As in, how many pitchers/relievers, depending on the state of the staff and their health and how many bullpen arms they may need in a series/situation.

Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins on the rotation: "I feel so good about the group that is in place." Says the team could still add before and at the trade deadline.

Arden Zwelling

@ArdenZwelling

Per Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins, Patrick Murphy’s shoulder issue is an AC joint injury. Occurred more than a month ago. He likely won’t be built up in time for start of the season but is expected to be ready soon thereafter.

@ArdenZwelling

Atkins says plan is to stretch out Julian Merryweather as a starter for now and make a decision on his regular season role later in camp. Still a possibility Merryweather factors into Blue Jays bullpen depending on how circumstances develop.

Arden Zwelling

@ArdenZwelling

Atkins says it’s realistic Alejandro Kirk could be Blue Jays back-up catcher while continuing to develop. Says Kirk has "shown us all the attributes it takes to be a major-league catcher” but focus now is durability and workload considering his limited minor-league foundation.

Arden Zwelling

@ArdenZwelling

That said, Reese McGuire's out of options and firmly in the mix for Blue Jays secondary catcher role. Of McGuire, Atkins says "we feel confident he can perform defensively — and if his offence comes around, he's a very valuable piece."

There is both global warming and a related increase in extreme weather events. And the longer we burn fossil fuels at this rate, the worse it is going to get.

Easy there Greta - I was just quoting Gibby as that was exactly something I'd have expected him to say whilst shoveling snow in Texas.

Yes I know, I was responding to Connor "changed the goal posts"
