The last year on this deal seems insane to me. It serves no purpose other than to offer Bauer a bonus if he suffers a major injury or falls off a cliff.

He gets payed an extra 17M if he is bad at his job.

It's not insane... Just think of year 3 as an insurance policy for Bauer. The contract is 2/$85 with an opt out and a $20 insurance policy on his career

Think it helps the Dodgers with the luxury tax. Takes the aav to 34 million rather 42.5 if it was just the two years 85 million. I assume saves them a decent amount and Bauer still gets his money.

Yeah, player security, if he sucks he's quaranteed a 102M Winner, If not he''s an 85M dollar asset.

He’s such an insufferable shitbag.

What's wrong with me and my feisty ass jersey selections the last few years??

My last 3 have been

Stroman

Donaldaon

Lawrie

All causing a commotion while my '92 Olerud jersey just hangs there all chill and s***

I suppose my jersey collection could be worse... If I hadn't said something to my wife just in the nick of time I would have ended up with a Ryan Goins jersey instead of the Donaldson. Phew

Stroman living rent free in the heads of middle aged men all over Canada will be his lasting legacy lmao

The only time I think about Stroman is when he tweets something stupid and it’s posted here. Or whenever I look at SWR’s Fangraphs page. What a steal.

You sound like you got HDMH tattoo’d inside your bicep and feel compelled to stick up for Marcus

I actually know someone who got Stromans autograph tattoo'd on their wrist.

Read my first FG article in months. They didn't disappoint:

Viewed then through the lens of savvy cap maneuvering, or netting a large pay day, or maximizing the quality of an already very good rotation, this deal checks all the boxes. We’re trained to like these sorts of signings, combining as they do smarts with a stated desire to win, a desire that is sadly often in short supply in today’s game. But it’s hard not to look at this through another lens, one that prioritizes accountability and how we treat one another over moving up the win curve, and find it wanting. Trevor Bauer got a clever deal, one befitting the sort of person and pitcher he sees himself as. He got paid. The Dodgers got better. I’m just not sure baseball did.

I can't imagine how giddy their crew of PA cheerleaders would be if literally any other player a) became the highest-earning player ever, and B) did with a pretty cool/unique contract structure.

Im just laughing at the fact that Stroman has been gone for a while yet his tweets are posted here all the time. I dont even particularly like Stroman and also agree he's a douche.

But its hilarious that he's still such a polarizing figure for some. Like look at your second paragraph lmao. All it does is make my original post funnier and funnier.

There's a large subsection of twitter who treat him like he's Ray Rice.

It's *verifiably* insane. These people have deeper mental problems than Trevor Bauer. Group level psychosis.

And I don't even like Bauer... but he's not a BAD person and he's great at the baseball.

Exactly... if that's the worst thing he's done in life and you think he's a bad person, you're a messed up person yourself.

People need to start getting charged or banned for the verbal assaults they launch on social media... one day I hope lol

Charged with what? Sorry but this stupid opinion makes you worse than them

Lol banned from these platforms seems more appropriate. Just not a fan of people running their mouth for things they wouldn't have the guts to say in person.

Now that he can't go to the Jays I have no problem saying what I've always felt about Bauer. Prima donna! Seriously, f*** that guy and his inflated ego. Hopefully he falls back to earth with another 4+ FIP season.

The purpose of the third year is to reduce the cap hit for the Dodgers on the first two years. Both sides know that there's no way Bauer is going to opt-in to the third year, even if he regresses. This is a two-year deal, they just didn't put it down as a two-year deal because the AAV would have been 42.5M and the Dodgers would have had to pay a lot more in luxury tax penalties or had a harder time getting under the cap. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dodgers are the ones who requested the third year in there.

And then of course, if Bauer does completely fall off a cliff, he has a $17M insurance policy.

Yikes. I can't imagine getting anyone's autograph tattoo'd on me tbh. Maybe Trevor Bauer but that's it

Ya for sure... really hope we hear a Paxton/Odorizzi signing soon.

Or Walker. If we sign even just one of those starters and Rosenthal we have had an amazing off season. We can always trade for someone impact during the season.

But in the back of my mind I am thinking we should still plunder the Rockies while they are making dumb decisions. Gray and Marquez for Grichuk? #justkidding

Clever. If the Dodgers and Yankees do this sort of thing with any regularity the league will probably change the rule

I didn't realize Degrom had an opt out after 2022. Given the fact that he's making 35 but has to defer something like 15 mil a year until he is age 47 to into his 50s, there's no chance Degrom opts into his final 2 years at 32.5 if he keeps dealing over the next 2 years.

How much does Degrom get going into his age 35 season as a guy who's been a top 3 pitcher in baseball every year for a 5 year stretch? Is Scherzer going to get 2 and 80 if he performs well this year?

I mean, I have no skin in this game, beyond thinking Bauer is a huge dickbag in general regardless of this one incident, but let's not pretend there isn't a HUGE power difference between some random college kid and a popular professional baseball player. That's like defending someone who punched a toddler by saying "what? The kid started it!"

I know that’s a common argument, but I don’t buy it. Twitter is a tool for making public statements. People are emboldened to talk s*** to famous people because the famous people ignore it most of the time. I don’t think we should vilify a famous person for deciding to respond to something said publicly to them by another adult. If anything, the internet might be a little less toxic if people were held accountable in this way more often.

What BTS said.

And it's decidedly not like toddler punching, lol.

Worst case scenario for the person is they have to delete Twitter or make a new handle. Big whoop. Personally if I negged a famous person and got dog piled by their followers I would find it hilarious and wear the event as a badge of honour

Bauer is often the instigator though. I don't give a s*** but let's not pretend he doesn't try to make s*** happen.

There are nutcases online and nutcases in public. Encounter one in public, the right thing to do is disengage, deescalate. Really, should do the same online.

Online bullying, etc often flows over into real life violence, as we've seen time and again.
