I know this has been discussed a bit already but I thought it was big enough to warrant a thread, especially since it doesn't sound like all the info is out yet and might not be immediately.

So the Cardinals gave their 15th best prospect and lower for this trade? I cant see Arenado opting out of that contract. Seems like a steal for the Cardinals especially with the Rockies throwing in 50 million.

I know the infield, and well, the offense in general is pretty clogged up for the Jays at this point (a wonderful problem to have) but I still would have liked to see them in on this. Love Arenado.

lmao, Bob Nightengale.

If you had to pick between Springer and Arenado at their respective contracts now... who would you pick? Ignore the fit part for now since we could have made a semien type move but for an CFer.

If we aren't talking about fit and a deal between the Rockies and the Jays is structured similarly to the one we're talking about now, I take Arenado over Springer in a heartbeat. 1.5 years younger, similar financial deal (looking like 175/7), and he doesn't come with any of the Astros stink. He's also always reminded me of Donaldson, who was easily my favorite Blue Jays player of all time.

I'd be stoked out of my mind if the Blue Jays got him and I'd probably buy his jersey the day it came out.

This is basically my reasoning in this trade. An embarrassing deal for the Rockies. For the second time in 3 years the Cardinals pry a star away from the NL West and while the DBacks return was far more reasonable they've given up no one they'll miss. Impressive work.

FWIW most of Springer's 2021 projections are better... that neutralizes some of the age difference

Does Gold glove defense at third tend to age better than other positions? Guys like Rolen and beltre were still good defensively into their late 30s. I'd probably prefer him over springer.

Yeah, I did take that into account, but as much as I respect projections and use them for my own analysis, I personally believe that wRC+ and other park-neutral stats don't do a good enough job of predicting how a guy will be impacted by moving home parks from one that's s***** for hitters to one that's great for them.

Donaldson added 10-20 points to his wRC+ and went from a 6.5 win player in his two MVP-caliber seasons with the A's to an 8 win player in his next two seasons with the Jays.

All that said, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the Steamer call is the correct one and Springer has a more valuable season. I just like Arenado more.

I do want to add though that even more than the projections (where Springer does edge out Arenado), the opt outs reduce the value of the deal imo. Taking those into account, it makes the hypothetical choice between the two guys a lot tougher for me, even if I don't think Arenado will exercise either one.

After this, I'm starting to think we can get Marquez for prospects outside our Top 10. If that's the case, we 100% need to do this now.

Marquez is pretty cheap in comparison, I don't think the Rockies would be desperate to move him out like they were with Arenado.

I could've sworn the Jays needed a 3B. For that price? Holy s***.

As has been pointed out, he likely doesn't waive his NTC for Toronto.

The Rockies are pathetic

Yeah. It always felt like they wanted to get rid of his contract almost immediately after signing it.

OK so the Cardinals are probably the best team in the NL Central now?

Does that motivate the Cubs to add? Or to throw in the towel for real and start dealing more of their trade chips?

After the Springer signing, I have a hard time believing players would be against Toronto given our current team dynamics. Players will go wherever they can they can contribute and win. If we were average or crap then I'd agree, we lose out probably.

We got a bunch of great vets to come here in the early 90s and there wasn't even the Internet available for ppl to learn about us. Its 2021 now, if you build it, they will come.

For me - I'm not sure I want the Jays to add Arenado at 6 years $149M right now if it prevents us from adding pitching and/or hurts our ability to lock up the core long term. Based on the team we have today, we'd be better to use that money for Bauer + Rosenthal.

This is a very unique and completely different situation IMO. Unloading a massive deal like Arenado's in a year when like 5 teams are spending (and most of those teams have already spent their wad) and the player can control which team he goes to (or doesn't want to go to) is a lot different than unloading your top pitcher who's still in his arbitration years.

There's also the fact they were after Semien (and probably Turner) so it may have just been a timing thing

Quite possible the Jays were working on multiple possible deals and were able to get Semien to sign before they could reach a possible deal with the Rockies for Arenado

Also possible they just preferred a shorter term contract
