Yeah I would have been fine giving him double that on a one year deal, but as mentioned he probably looked at it as NY or Japan, and he's certainly made enough money in his career to choose location over money.

He was the second best option left after Bauer in my opinion, so this kind of sucks. Fair to say he's leaving money on the table here without a doubt, but that's obviously not his main consideration at this point.

Yup. Safe bet he was offered 15M per year on a 2 or 3-year deal. Just didn't want to be anywhere by NY.

I think the key is that it's a one year deal. He's still young enough that he could come back next year and still get a 3-4 year deal. Probably had a very specific set of things he wanted here and if he didn't get it, I don't blame the guy at all for wanting to be back home, especially when Japan is doing so much better than the embarrassment that is the States when it comes to the pandemic.

This is generally bad for baseball. Tanaka is great for the sport and I always enjoyed watching him pitch (even if he was shutting down the Jays). Hope to see him back next year, but I wouldn't count on it.
