Slade Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 I'm curious if people would be OK with a package around Biggio + others for Bryant and Hendricks. It's mostly to address the starting pitching gap in a cost effective manner because I don't see us keeping Bryant after the year. I would not be ok with that for exactly the reasons Terminator said.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Biggio to the OF. Grichuk and/or Teoscar for a SP
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 My first thought was the $ seemed high but the more I think about it I like the move. 1 year deal for a likely 2-3 win player with upside, also can play SS when Bichette needs a day off. Jays lineup looks really deep now, only thing about it is its super RH heavy with the only LHB being Biggio and Tellez. It will murder LHP but come playoff time makes it easier to gameplan against. Now just need to address the rotation. No way they can go into the season with Tanner Roark starting.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Woohoo, one year deal, sweet.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Biggio to the OF. Grichuk and/or Teoscar for a SP You’d have to trade Gri for a negative SP contract. We have a small army of scrubs there already. Better to sign some halfway decent ones from FA scrap heap. Hopefully Jays sign one of better ones though
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 So can we get to the bottom of this: is it pronounced SEM-ien or SIM-ien? Because it’s always been SIM on the Jays broadcasts and I never knew if it was because they knew something or because they thought he was a simian.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 No I don't think so. Biggio is worth a lot more than Bryant due to age, control and cost and Hendricks isn't cheap. I'd rather just keep Biggio and then sign or trade for a SP on their own, perhaps even Hendricks himself. Keep the prospects in the chamber to see how the season is shaking out and who may become available during the season. Also, with Covid still hanging over us all, maybe the season gets really whacky and gets cancelled. Dont give up any goldstar prospects until the season has been established and running smoothly.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Its literally in the report that his primary postion will be 2B lol. I know but it makes no sense to put Biggio at 3B who is very below average there. Might as well use Vladdy. This is all interchangeable throughout ST and into the season, don't sweat the small stuff and bust out the lube and fap, fellas. God Damn!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Gonna start banning people who don't love this signing or are immediately saying the Jays needed pitching instead lol
The Iceman Verified Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Incredible roster flexibility with this move, how can anyone complain. Not sure why Semien would accept the single year deal with the massive SS hitting FA next season but glad he did.

Not sure why Semien would accept the single year deal with the massive SS hitting FA next season but glad he did. The complaint is due to lack of patience and needing assurances that all holes will be filled in the rotation. Until that happens, all other acquisitions won't be savoured for the sweet treats they are.

That’s the money he thought he was worth (at least) and no way he was getting that on multi year deal. He’ll have the earn the payday

I mean it’s being a Denny Downer when the good news first breaks but you can’t give a final grade to the off-season until picture is complete. Smart money is on them fixing the SP I think but we’ll see
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 It freaks me out. Keith now just brings it up randomly when asked about different players. Like if he gets asked a question on the Siemen signing. Barry from Barry - Keith what do you think of the Siemen signing Keith - Jays off season has been really good. Springer and Siemen and 6-8 wins. Our projections have them at 89 now just out of the playoffs. The problem is Biggio can't hit the fastball, that will cost them this year. Hopefully they recognize what is going on with Biggio after 2 weeks and get him out of there before he costs them too many wins. lol... you had me look for this initially, well played, Olerud.

Just ahead of Nolan Arenado.

He’ll have the earn the payday Yeah he wants the big money deal that his 2019 season would have warranted, so it makes more sense to take the high AAV for one year, and try again next season when teams should have more money to spend and he might be coming off a better season.

Yeah I read something like 6/120 projection going into the season. That’s gotta be a tough pill to swallow when you’re getting 2/28 3/42 offers one short season later
labadee Verified Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 why would anyone crticize a one year deal with potential upside?
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 This makes a lot of sense for both sides. Jays just need that short term help for this year, Semien needs a place where he can rake and try again next year for a big contract. Semien profiles as the type of guy like Encarnacion or Bautista who could break out here plus being surrounded by a strong offense and maybe playing in the Dome (or some minor league bandbox) will really rack up the counting stats. I can see why both sides wanted to get this thing done.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 You don't think they add a FA SP? NRI's at this point. A starter if the market remains dead and they get one they want at a bargain price and 1 year term.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 Wow this is the infield move I was hoping for but wasn't really expecting it to happen, I figured somebody would sign Semien to play shortstop instead. With his addition this lineup is absolutely stacked now, and with or without potential breakouts from guys like Vladdy Jr. and Danny Jansen this lineup is going to score an obscene amount of runs. I do hope the starting rotation is addressed at some point, there are plenty of depth options already available on the roster but a good quality starter would really push this team over the top.

Ya, if we added Bauer and Rosenthal, I can't see a single hole on our team. I think we're at 128 mill currently and would be at like 170 with both of them added. Crazy part is that both things are actually possible because of the amount of expiring contracts we have next year. It just sounds like too much to add to the payroll in a single offseason so I'd bet against it.

Even somebody like Jake Odorizzi would potentially be a very good addition, I do think he's very likely to bounce back fully from his poor 2020 season which was largely ruined by injuries. Jays have made all kinds of free agency bets on bounce back candidates already, from Ray, to Chatwood, to Yates and finally to Semien. Even if these guys don't reach previous heights of performance they'll still likely act as substantial upgrades to the roster as is, might as well keep the ball rolling and add more upside to the club.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 What difference does it make on a 1 year deal? If it actually somehow did matter, we could just backload year 2 or 3 on whatever SP we sign by a couple of mil to make it all fit. If said pitcher comes on a 1 year deal and we are that squeezed for cash (all indications seem to be that we aren't), just forego signing anymore 3 million dollar flyers for the bullpen. It makes a difference if we aren't able to afford the pitcher we want. I don't exactly expect that to be the case, but I can't make a full evaluation of the Semien signing until I see if we come out of it with a good starting pitcher. As of right now, I am quite happy.

Who are you waiting on Bauer? I kid, Odorizzi or Paxton, sounds like Tanaka's going home, I forget who you like?
