Funny thing about this column by Wilner 'Dante Bichette joins Blue Jays again to try to help unlock those bats' is that he wrote it on Saturday August 28, 2021 i am assuming BEFORE the game vs the Tigers when they won to start this run of 15W - 2L.

Jays offense since this article was written has been like playing MLB The Show 2021 on rookie mode. I think Dante unlocked the bats.....

Truth... they've been killing it all season.

Ruh - Roh...

Jose Berrios dealt with left abdominal tightness in his start Tuesday night against the Rays.

Advice: That helps to explain why he was pulled at 87 pitches, having yielded just one run across seven sharp frames in the Blue Jays' eventual 2-0 shutout loss to Tampa Bay. Berrios was getting treatment after the game and manager Charlie Montoyo didn't have much of an update on his status, other than telling reporters that he didn't think imaging tests would be necessary. There should be more clarity on the issue later this week. The right-hander currently lines up for a rematch versus the Rays next Monday.

Sounds more like a precautionary thing. Cole was lifted from his start with hamstring tightness and didn't miss a start. Usually when you have a bad pull there's a moment where it happens and everyone knows. He could have felt something and was pitching through it for a couple innings. He was lobbying to stay in the game when he got pulled, so it couldn't have been that bad.

It was nice to see Springer's double. The speed is there when he needs it. He went full out and was seemingly fine afterwards.

Is Vlad gonna break an arb1 record?

Kind of depends on the CBA I would guess, but he’s gonna get at least $10M is my guess.

4 years of arbitration

He's gonna be expensive AF

Might as well just give him a 12 year deal now

If the Jays go to arbitration with Guerrero it would be a colossal mistake. Lock him up for 8 years and get it done with.

You’re correct though that the CBA and how it turns out in the off-season will be extremely impacting. It’s not just Vlad though, Biggio, Jansen, Teoscar, Berrios, Cimber, Mayza, Stripling….all of them are arbitration eligible in the off-season as well, just in varying stages. Bo doesn’t hit arb 1 until next off-season which is nice.

Mayza won’t be expensive, Jansen won’t be either, Cimber will be cheap, stripling probably a bit higher than his 3 million this year. Teoscar will get a bump for sure but he deserves it. Berrios will be interesting as they might try to extend him, Biggio will be cheap but certainly retained. Borucki will be cheap, Thornton will be very cheap or just cut loose.

So here's what we could be looking at the rest of the way if the Jays want to get Ray lined up for the Yankees series and a potential WC game:

vs MIN

Ryu (5 days rest)

Matz (5)

*Berrios (regular rest)

@ TB

Ray (regular)

Manoah (7 days rest)

Ryu (regular)

@ MIN

Matz (regular)

Berrios (regular)

Ray (regular)

Manoah (regular)

vs NYY

Ryu (5)

**Berrios (regular)

Ray (regular)

vs BAL

Matz (7)

Manoah (regular)

Ryu (regular)

*Manoah skipped

**Matz skipped

So this gives us Berrios on regular rest of there's a game 163, and Ray on regular rest for the WC game.

Looks good to me

Makes the most sense IMO. Ray would get 2 more starts in important games against the Rays and Yanks, and also lines him up for the wildcard. Manoah likely needs the rest/innings restriction.

Yesterday historically Canada tested it's first newly acquired cruisemissle at the Rogers Center it was fired from the bat of baseball highly touted player Vladimir Guerrero Jr it was fired at 114 MPH the laser like guided bomb sail at very low level in a straight line over left field wall. ;)

Funny thing is he hit 4 balls with almost the same exit velocity, launch angle and distance. The stats-cast system gives them a expected batting average of something like .750 to .800. And in a small sample size of 4 that is what happened.

Homerun down the left field line. Out to center. Double to left. Double to left center.

EVs were 113, 113, 106, and 116. LA 15, 15, 16 and 14. Distances something like 350, 360, 360 and 350.

Not sure the 106 was right (that was the double over the left fielders head yesterday). Looked like it was also a rocket that surprised Arozarena.

I feel that Joakim Soria is the least reliable pitcher out of our BP i just don get how you can get behind a guy that has 7.88 ERA in 8 IP and 7 ER . It's much guarantee that the opposition will end up scoring some runs during his outing given the closeness of the playoff race one would think it might be time to consider to DFA him given his age one wouldn't think they're looking to bring him back for next year. I certainly don't want to see him out on the mound again for sure.

Soria has decent enough FIP, xFIP, and xERA numbers. His ERA is a bit inflated.

He is definitely lower on the totem pole and should not be a high leverage guy but he won't be in the playoffs unless Charlie wants to actually get fired. We'll see.

Yesterday was a big lead. It was fine to use him. Dude gave up a two run bomb and it was still a comfy win.

The pen is basically:

Closer - Romano

Reliables - Mayza, Cimber, Richards

Unreliables with promise - Pearson, Merryweather, Borucki

Unreliable with veteran savvy - Soria

Long man - Stripling

There are definitely certain situations where you would prefer Soria to any of "unreliables with promise". Borucki has lost the zone and Merryweather/Pearson have so little experience this year, any of the three are more liable than Soria to like, walk the bases loaded or f*** up so bad that it leads to a monstrous inning. Soria might give up some hits but to me he seems more likely to do the basic thing correctly (throw strikes, make the other team earn it).

If the reliables are not available who to go to in a 6-1 or 7-1 game? I see the case for Soria there.

If the reliables are not available and you need someone to come in with men on and get huge strikeouts, that should be the time to roll the dice on Merryweather or Pearson.

The wrong time to use Soria is when you need to get out of a tight spot. IMO.

Good analysts but I have to disagree why not use Pearson, Merryweather or Borucki with that big lead to get them that experience needed and for Borucki to reinvent himself on the mound.

lol. Did you really have to merge the 'cruise missile' thread to Blue Jays general discussion. Unreal.

The cruise missile comment was pretty benign. It was also as good a place as any to continue talking about the effect of 'direction' of hits.

It was actual very interesting that Vlad's Monday homerun was viewed as 'historic', when in fact he hit 4 almost identical line drives in the series.

Anyway I am sure everyone's life is better now that they don't have to look at multiple thread titles. That is a real pain. It's much easier to go to the "Around Baseball", or "General Blue Jays" thread and search through the last 10 pages to find the topic one is interested in.

I think the possible educational value of the thread is lost as well. I think if you asked 100 Americans “Does Canada have cruise missiles”, or “Does Canada have fighter jets”, you’d likely get a diverse set of answers between “yes”, “no”, “probably”, and “I’m not sure”

Jays getting some well deserved love south of the border

I know the analysis is intentionally simplified but to imply that this team without Springer is a .500 team is just flat out wrong. Springer's time on the DL coincided with the height of the bullpen's incompetence. They could at least use run differential or runs per game since he has had minimal impact on the defensive side of the game this year.

Going to be interesting to see what the Jays do this off season to address 2B and 3B

Apparently they already tried to extend Semien, but I don't see him coming back.

Do they go big game hunting, or do they save money for the core and pitching by filling those spots from within?

2B -> Biggio/Lopez

3B -> Espinal/Smith

Maybe get Moreno playing some more at 3B and then wait for him, Groshans and Martinez to make their way to the show.

I think they target a free agent they can get on a 1 year deal, like Semien this year. This is a perfect lineup to build value in. I'm thinking Story might be a candidate for this after a down year.

Honestly I wouldn't be against them going big and try to get Ramirez from Cleveland. Will cost a fair whack but we still have the prospect capital that I believe could land us him.

Bringing Ray + Semien back should be priority no.1 though

Youre right, SSS weird things can happen. and as established earlier, we know xBA doesnt take hit direction into account. It's a limitation of the stat so we dont take it so seriously that we automatically assume things, it just gives us reason to look deeper.

Can't recall but someone else said something about hitters knowing what field they can hit it to... yeah, true to a point, but those fields are pretty wide and also the defense is capable of moving before the pitch, so even then taking hit direction into account would still be limiting.

xBA is a general stat that is generally useful and somewhat limited. In fact, looking at that 4 AB sample size, it pretty much worked perfectly. With the xBA, if he hit 100 of those balls with the same EV and launch angle, he'd have 75-80 hits most likely. Since it was 4 ABs, 3 out of 4 would likely be hits... which is precisely what happened.
