Laika Community Moderator Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 For a young guy, Manoah gives a great interview. It's part of why they drafted him Go listen to the Baseball America podcast with the Jays scout who signed Manoah. Cool insights.

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Missed last night's game. Pearson's line doesn't look the best. Anyone want to share a Pearson analysis? Bad luck, a lot of it. An error by Bo, then a bloop double, tough start. Then two solid singles. Was throwing 98 (not 100+) and not getting ahead of hitters so didn't exactly look amazing.

Cool insights. I love everything about Manoah. The list is long...loves playing, loves learning, great for the dugout, etc.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Pearson zero command. Pitches catch too much of the plate. Gets behind and has to come in. He got some back luck last night too, but 97 (inch or two outside) and 98 were squared up well off him. He hung a slider meatball. Even the GB for the DP to 3B was hit pretty hard. Not missing bats. They need to keep finding spots for him and getting him out there. I cannot see him learning anything more in AAA. Anyone else got some thoughts/numbers on what we saw? (Cant stop watching Jays in 30 this am on PVR lol. I love seeing and hearing that crowd excitement. Brings back good memories. Awesome)

He doesn't need great command to be a great reliever. On balance the stuff we saw wasn't worse or much worse than Romano's s***, for example. He's a huge upgrade over certain other options.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Dam, hadn’t looked at standings in a bit and see Jays still 5 back after sweep
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Dam, hadn’t looked at standings in a bit and see Jays still 5 back after sweep What sweep?

Will be interesting to see where Pearson gets to. Romano's slider looks pretty lousy since the crackdown. Doesn't have the bite, and he is throwing it a lot less consequently.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 What sweep? Damn it. Now I can’t even erase it.

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 Dickerson in CF today oh jeez Haha yikes. Teoscar could probably do better there but maybe they don't want him to get hurt chugging around in CF. Seems like a bit decision though.

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Yeah, bWAR uses actual runs given up in their calcs rather than FIP which is what Fangraphs uses. I also misspoke earlier when i said that his HRs given up were the only thing hurting him. His runners stranded rate is also pretty god-tier and unsustainable which is another reason his fWAR takes a hit. See of all the top tier pitchers, Ray has the lowest babip, highest strand rate, doesn't have the best K rate (but it's still great) or walk rate (again still pretty good), and the lowest ground ball rate. Each of those factors, since they get normalized to a degree with fWAR calcs, take him down ever so slightly but bWAR doesnt care about that. WAR isnt a predictive stat it's to determine value accrued over the course of the season, at least that's what I thought. So why does fWAR use predictive measures to determine his actual worth to date. That seems counter intuitive.

So why does fWAR use predictive measures to determine his actual worth to date. That seems counter intuitive. It’s a bit of both because actual results can vary widely from pitcher to pitcher dong the exact same thing because of those things that are not in the pitchers control. The perfect example is Matz vs Ray in August. Both pitchers had very good ERAs, but only one of them actually pitched well.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Merryweather threw 16 pitches today, only 8 for strikes, while hitting a batter and a base hit. He's not ready for the Yankees series.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2021 Author Posted September 5, 2021 No pitcher in the AL has been nearly as valuable as Ray has been so far this season. His RA9-WAR is 1.2 higher than Cole's, who's been the next best guy. Ray for Cy Young. Bonus stat: Berrios and Ryu are both in the MLB Top 30 for RA9-WAR as well.

Cole also cheated, if voters care about that type of thing
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Can Ray sustain this long term? Have to be sure before you throw $25 million + at him for multiple years.
