Not a horrible job. But Mullins got fried by him in the 9th.

 

I always like it when we get a bad ump call but my mind then quickly goes to "we need robo umps now". It would be fairer and better for all in the game.

They've been using robo-umps in the minors this year - run scoring is up in those leagues as well, due in large part to the increased walks.

Advantage is on the hitter for sure to know they can rely on a consistent strike zone. A guy like Biggio's value becomes more positive so I really hope they introduce this starting next season. Seems logical that they do.

Robo umps will just make players better.

When a ball is called a strike it forces a batter out of their comfort zone and forces them to swing at pitches they normally would not.

There was an article on baseball america about it, and they said hard throwers at the top of the zone benefitted greatly becauase that's the strike that the human ump doesnt call. However, they also found the low strike that human umps tend to call, wasn't called.

 

They also found that the left and right side of the zone borderline calls greatly benefitted the hitter. No more human ump strike zone expansion on 3-0 and 2 strike counts, which is when the majority of those calls get blown by human umps.

 

Frank Viola is on one the teams in the league using it and he said the command/control guys really get stifled because they don't get the benefit of the human umps being swayed by framing etc. He also said, of course, that it's far from perfected and will only get better over time.

Isn't that obvious? By saying it works both ways is for elite pitching and bats, lumber takes precedence as soon as you see poor pitching.

Maybe, but Ryu is pretty crafty. He'll mix it up / tunnel it as he always does and get the hitters chasing.

Ryu would never pitch under this, he's too old... this is years away.

Yeah it would be an adjustment for catchers,no framing necessary

I guess they can still call for pitches off the plate but good hitters adjust too and will tighten up their own personal swing zone

I can't wait for robo umps to be fine tuned and brought to MLB.

 

At the very least it will take ego, vindictiveness and personal feeling completely out of the equation when it comes to balls and strikes.
