Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Anyone think Gibby got offered the Astros job when Hinch got suspended? Wonder if he seriously considered it. You can take the man out of Texas but... You know I feel like he is the guy that is just happy sitting on a front porch with a beer...... If something comes along he will look at it if not he isn't bothered.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Every day that passes without Gibby managing a team is a sad day for baseball fans. He's a genuine great person and knows his baseball.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Gibby got his fair share of criticism from us, but he was ok. I was trying to think of his most egregious offences, but they are hard to recall. I remember coming unglued over some scrub reliever use in leverage etc, but I would take him any day over Buntoyo. Hard to know. Buntoyo let Vlad play 60 games at 300 pounds last year and somehow got him to show up at 240 this year, he hasn't freaked out when Bo looked like Russ Adams for a couple weeks. Or when Cavan Biggio couldn't hit fastballs and was stuck at .150 If Jansen or Tellez ever turn it around we'll be thankful for Buntoyo's patience. Not sure how Gibby would of dealt with those situations... not really saying he would of messed it up and sent Vlad to independent league and Bo to 2b and Cavan to aaa I just honestly don't know how he would handle young players struggling occasionally.

None of those decisions are the managers.

I'm not trying to say he was particularly good or bad with young players, but it's not like he doesn't have experience in breaking them into the majors. Alex Rios, Aaron Hill, Adam Lind, Shaun Marcum, Casey Janssen, Dustin McGowan, Roberto Osuna, Marcus Stroman, Kevin Pillar, Devon Travis, and Teoscar Hernandez got their start under Gibby and had success, just to name a few.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Gibby is such a f***ing gem. I miss him so much. https://memmo.me/global/en/video/rEMQiDc lol... f*** I miss this man, that was great ole Gibby!
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Yay... May 18, 12:27 PM EDT EDT Hatch (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Buffalo. Analysis Buffalo plans to deploy Hatch in a tandem start with Jacob Waguespack, so expect the 26-year-old right-hander to cover around 3-to-4 innings before exiting the game. The outing marks Hatch's first of the season, as he's been on the mend from a right elbow impingement since late March. Hatch will likely need to complete at least two or three rehab starts at Buffalo before the Blue Jays consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 19, 2021 Posted May 19, 2021 Did a Vlad Jr check during the game. In all of baseball he ranks: 2nd in wRC+ 2nd in wOBA 2nd in OBP 2nd in OPS 5th in HR 3rd in WAR Only Trout is ahead of him in every stat and compare their BABIP: Trout .456 Vlad .327
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 19, 2021 Posted May 19, 2021 Vlad will likely make the All Star Game No other AL first baseman is having anything close to as good a season so far

Of course, if Otani continues doing what he's doing, he's almost certainly going to win it off narrative alone.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2021 Posted May 19, 2021 Yeah, if he stays healthy and continues at the rate he's going, Ohtani is definitely winning MVP. Only thing that might hurt him is the Angels are ass, but Trout won a bunch of them so probably not.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 19, 2021 Posted May 19, 2021 The Angels are going to finish with 70 wins and the Jays are going to threaten for 100 so Vlad Jr. is my heavy favorite. Ryu is a prohibitive lock for the CY.

But Ohtani's story, is "better" even if Vladdy's WAR (Frank Thomas stats in low-O environment with lightning-cat 1b defense) is better.

I like them both, but Ohtani-san with a Trout-less Angels team on pace for 69 wins winning the AL MVP seems a reach for me. Despite pitching AND hitting he has a combined 2.1 fWAR, that’s tied for 10th place. Vlad is ONLY hitting and has 2.5 fWAR and a chance to lead the Jays to an AL pennant against a ridiculous schedule and division. If Trout is out for 8 weeks, the only other hitters close is Buxton and Bogaerts in WAR. I have doubts Buxton can sustain 224 wRC+ and his team sucks. While the Red Sox had a really soft schedule to start the season. The Jays have yet to face teams like the Orioles (17-25), Tigers (17-26), and Twins (14-27).

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 Can we please play the Twins before they turn their season around? Thanks.

All of the reasons you laid out are exactly why I believe Vlad should be MVP frontrunner right now. That doesn't change that Ohtani will likely win it because of the narrative. People aren't writing stuff like this about Vlad. That article alone shows that Ohtani has already approached mythic status in baseball. I don't think he should be MVP but I'm certain the writers will give it to him.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 20, 2021 Posted May 20, 2021 It's a long season. If Vladdy stays healthy and keeps this up and the Jays are headed to the post season, the writers will devote more attention to him.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 21, 2021 Posted May 21, 2021 (edited) Well that came out small lol. Vlad 1st in WAR among hitters and tied with Cole Edited May 21, 2021 by LetTheBallFly
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 3 points shy of 1.100... what a bum.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Going to need to stock up on pepto for this. Should be electric. Man, i hope Springer comes back fully healthy soon. Yeah It's been gut wrenching so far . Yikes Hold on!!
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Author Posted May 22, 2021 Vlad is now leading all of Major League Baseball in fWAR (hitters and pitchers), while Gabriel Moreno has surpassed Francisco Alvarez for the best wRC+ in Minor League Baseball when taking age and level into account (though Jesus Sanchez has a pretty strong case as a 23-year-old in AAA with an inhuman 302 wRC+).
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Bad news man... Of all the players that we could have lost to the DL, Biggio hurts the least. Let him rest up and hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
