is anthony kay really that bad as tonight ?

Kay got BABIP'd to death. He looked really good, but the results were s***.

Anyone ready for the robot strike zone yet?

It was bad enough in the old days when we assumed the umps were s*****. Now when we get to see it in slow motion and with the pitch tracker it is an avoidable embarrassment.

If you had asked me this 10 years ago, the answer would still have been "yes".

Posted

The problem is umps are protected by their union. They could make a hundred s***** calls per game and it would still be virtually impossible to fire them, or send them down to AAA.

I think they would practically have to be charged with murder before MLB can fire them, and even that I'm not sure about

EDIT: I see one ump was fired back in 2013 for falling drugs tests

I fully support robot umps.

The only downside to robot strike zone and instant replay is we would probably see the end of amusing manager ejections. I mean there would really no longer be anything to argue, ha ha.

That sounds perfect to me.

Trade idea from The Athletic:

Trades I’d like to see happen now

Blue Jays deal Randal Grichuk and Alejandro Kirk to Marlins for Pablo López

The Marlins rotation is good enough to not only reach the postseason, but also run the table in October. However, Miami’s problem is it doesn’t have enough offense or bullpen depth to take advantage of that strong rotation. I think it’s time for first-year general manager Kim Ng to start wheeling and dealing.

The Marlins match up well with the Blue Jays in a potential deal. The Blue Jays have a big need for another starting pitcher, and Pablo López would be a perfect fit. López, 25, went 6-4 last year with a 3.61 ERA and a 3.09 FIP. He really knows how to pitch. He has averaged 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.8 walks per nine since the start of 2020. López’s fastball is mostly 92 to 94 mph, and he throws an above-average change-up, his best secondary pitch. His four-pitch mix also includes a curveball and a cutter.

López would fit nicely in the Blue Jays rotation with Hyun Jin Ryu, Robbie Ray, Steven Matz and, eventually, rookie Nate Pearson. López’s ability to change speeds and eye levels with precision would provide a different look for the rotation.

In return, the Marlins would receive Randal Grichuk, who has hit 22 or more home runs four times in his career, including 31 in 2019. Last year, he hit 12 homers in 216 at-bats in the shortened season. Grichuk, 29, is the Blue Jays’ fourth outfielder, and he’s expected to lose playing time once George Springer returns from the injured list. A strong outfield that includes right fielder Teoscar Hernández, who won a Silver Slugger Award last year, and left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. leaves Grichuk with a role as a part-time outfielder and designated hitter.

The Marlins would also net their long-term solution at catcher in Alejandro Kirk, who is one of the best-hitting catching prospects in baseball and projects as a .300 hitter and a .400 OBP player. Grichuk and Kirk would immediately improve the Marlins offense. And Miami would still be blessed with starting pitching depth, with Sandy Alcantara, Sixto Sánchez, Trevor Rogers and Nick Niedert leading the way and several top prospects behind them, including Elieser Hernandez and Jorge Guzman (both currently on the IL) and young arms at the alternate site such as Edward Cabrera, Braxton Garrett and Max Meyer.

Anything that has me selling high on RG and I am in.

With Moreno and Adams in the farm, I probably would trade Kirk if and when a proper trade came up. I have zero info on Lopez to comment on this mentioned trade but I wouldnt be against

trading Kirk for a possible long term pitcher (but....is there such a thing??).

I'm sold on Kirk being a MLB catcher....just not sure for how long though before his body breaks down unless he does more of a transformation....IMHO he's only half way there for getting in shape.

I think it's becoming pretty apparent that Jansen is a backup catcher. I'm leery on trading Kirk when we're in our competitive window (unless/until Moreno is ready and we know he's a starter).

I would have done this trade in the offseason. It's still a value win for us, but quite a bad fit at the moment.

Looks like it's raining at Hickman stadium.. Are we gonna get a game in tonight?

30% chance at game time, 60% between 9-10 (less than 1mm per hour) and then it drops down to 20% after 11pm EST and onward. We'll get it in, but it will be wet.

I'd love to watch some Jays baseball but pls feel free to postpone as many games to the future as possible. Although having a double header being depleted as we are will probably work against us.

Boo 7 inning games.

The decimated bullpen are the only one happy about it

Shityy thing is they'll probably have no choice but to use Roark at some point

I would say this favors us since Matz and Ray are both good, and our bullpen is kinda weak right now. The fact that we only have to play 7 innings each SHOULD mean we won’t see more than 2-3 relievers tomorrow

Highly unlikely... he just pitched yesterday using 49 bullets, no way. That's like saying we'll see Kay tomorrow.

They may be more careful with Kay than Roark!...same reasons why people have old junker cars for the winter! LOL
