This is why I was baffled why so many posters wanted to trade for Lindor. Not only a rental, but a MLBPA rep who is going to want a top 5-10 contract in baseball history (+ at least a decade in length) to re-sign.

You can rub the player you are trying to sign for 10+ years the bad way. Most people like their negotiations kept under wraps which is why majority of this stuff doesn't happen often.

I can care less but would find it funny if he leaves the Mets in the offseason. At least now we know why we didn't trade for the guy. I would not want to give him 400 over 12 years.

Not surprised this is happening. Whatever happens (leaves after this year, or resigns a ridiculous contract) it's a typical Met's shitshow.

Steve Cohen is pretty much Trevor Bauer if he owned a baseball team.

Feels like these Lindor talks on twitter are coming dangerously close to tampering...

I'm almost certain he'll do/say something really stupid within the next 5 years and the league forces him to sell the team

I can't be the only one who thinks that a tweet like those from the owner of team is a little scummy. Seems like he's trying to protect himself and the Mets public perception in the event that Lindor doesn't sign. A byproduct of which will be fans turning their animosity to Lindor. Wonder what Lindor thinks about his negotiation playing out so publicly and that move.

I agree with you and Jays24, this seems counter-productive airing s*** out in public. Good way for him to demand a trade, or just not sign now. Play for yourself, Franky!!!

I don't see tampering, he's their property... also that's a good comp, lol.

And many posters had said the price would be on a different scale, concerning a rental or extension. Meh...

I thought "one year left on his deal, and going to expect a ludicrous contract" would mean the prospect capital wouldn't be that high. As soon as it was clear that I was wrong, I changed my tune on trading for him.

What exactly makes you think the Jays will go 11 and 350 for Lindor..lol.

Because Mark Shapiro isn’t an idiot who self-imposes non-sensical restrictions such as not going more than 5 years on a free agent contract or not dealing with Scott Boras clients. And he also has more confidence from Rogers than any prior President/CEO did.

Not saying this means we’ll get Lindor, but the way this current Blue Jays regime operates is not the same as we’re accustomed to. They actually have 1-3-5 year plans as opposed to flying by the seat of their pants, and that instills confidence in ownership to invest more money. I wouldn’t bet on us getting Lindor, but I wouldn’t be entirely surprised either.

Idk, they wanted him this offseason, pretty sure they knew and were willing to give him what he wants.

Derek Jeter should honestly be forced to forfeit his shares with the Marlins after this.

What's the back story? First comment I see... *Loan Shark Park* lol... I get it.

Pretty smart move by Shapiro/Atkins to not trade for Lindor. Probably did their due diligence regarding what it would take to extend Lindor without him testing free agency and realized it wasn't worth the combination of his absurdly high ask and the prospect capital for a 1-year rental in a season where we're not exactly going all in. Not sure they would've pulled the trigger unless they more or less had a deal in place beforehand.

Much happier that we got Springer for basically just cash and 2nd round pick.

Yeah. I didn’t think Lindor would get close to 325. He’s a much lesser player than Betts and deserves significantly less money.

His relationship with the fanbase is going to be tarnished before opening day. They’re going to (rightly) feel slighted about his ridiculous demands.

Rightly? It was the owner who started this charade for no damn reason other than "look at me and my money" ********. Hell, most of us saw the shitshow coming, I didn't think it'd be that fast. Rightly, is disingenuous buddy.

Cohen leaked the terms because he made a ridiculous offer to Lindor, and wants the fans to know that he did everything he reasonably could to get him signed. If Lindor actually turns that down it’s not going to be Cohen catching heat from the fanbase.

Which in turn starts an even more ridiculous leaked rumour of Lindor's price... stupid move in my opinion, he could have easily tweeted his final offer if and when talks fail. Just another Mets shitshow is right, I'm talking about this year's effect on dumn-dumn's tweet. Stupid. He essentially pulled a gun on Franky, man. That's not how you do business, by the way Cohen didn't leak anything, he tweeted it himself.

Yeah, but players don't like their negotiations being put out in the public, despite the fact that agents leak things all the time. It's not like something was leaked to the media. It was Cohen himself who made it public. This can piss a player off and he might sign for less money somewhere else. Regardless, Lindor is crazy for turning down 10 and 325 if he actually likes New York.

Sounds like they did fail. Mets final offer was rejected.

So it's alright for the the player representative to reveal offers but not the team? Kind of one sided.

I don't think Cohen did anything wrong. It's a business, players use different tactics all the time to gain an advantage in negotiations why can't the owners.

Cohen might be also protecting the team and himself from fan outrage. Usually if a player doesn't sign an extension the fans blame the team, which could hurt attendance/revenue. Him coming out and announcing the offer shows that they were willing to give him more than a fair offer. The owners priority is to protect the team, which is what he did. Do you think if the team low balled Lindor, his agent or Lindor himself wouldn't have leaked that info?

As for this effecting future free agents, I think this will have very little play on that. The players will still go where the money is.

Provoked by an owners tweet, he killed it 5 minutes in, didn't you read my post? Cohen hasn't tweeted since Lindor's camp leaked that. He had all season to negotiate as you know, they own him till the WS end.

It's the manor in which things are done. When things are leaked, there's numbers out there. You're not sure what to believe, because guys like Nightengale just sort of make numbers up. There's no smokescreen. The owner made the details public. The Agent is rarely the one who puts out the actual numbers!

If Lindor has a tough start to the season and puts up a .700 OPS in the first few weeks of the season it should be fun watching the New York media get on him. The pressure is on Lindor day 1 of the season.

I don't think its right to start trying to turn the fanbase against your newly acquired star player before he's even played a game. I think these tweets make sense if Lindor was a free agent, but he isn't.

The correct course of action would have been to say "we made a strong offer and we hope he accepts". If he doesn't, then nobody is really mad because you still have him for a year and you still have a chance to sign him in the offseason, and that's when you can start talking numbers on twitter.

Exactly what I've been saying, that tactic is bush league to me. Do it at the end of the season while his rights are owned.

Lindor clearly wants to test free agency and is forcing the Mets to ridiculously overpay him in order to get him to extend. No way he would turn down 10/325 otherwise. That's a very fair offer. That's not a discount. There's no guarantee a team gives him more than that 9 months from now, but he obviously wants to bet on himself and take that chance.

Cohen is definitely going to turn the fans against Lindor if no extension is reached, but all of that could be flipped if Lindor has an amazing season.
