Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 He was struggling to grip the ball early in the game because it was windy? WTF dude.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 I've never pitched. Is it fair to say he means that he can't grip/control the ball while throwing a 99 mph fastball and 90 mph changeup and slider? What if everything was 4-5 mph slower? I've pitched for 30 years and unless it was raining or the ball was wet (because it was raining) - I've never once felt like I had issues gripping the ball and I never used rosin. Then again, I probably topped out at 75-80 MPH
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 Josh Donaldson is probably the happiest guy on the planet right now lol. I can picture him like a villain in his lair, laughing maniacally.

We need Jomboy to investigate. IIRC, rumors came out about the Astros trash can cheating and it was Jomboy who sifted through all the video and provided the very damning evidence. Jomboy is the hero we need.

BuffaloWings Verified Member Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 My god Gerrit Cole is annoying. I've literally watched a one handed mechanic fix cars before. If he can grip a wrench well enough to do his job, I think the baseball pitcher can get by without cheating. If you cant grip the ball without using a substance, you probably should have never made it to the pros. They need to stop justifying the cheating and start recognizing that maybe they just need to figure it out or move on. I could win a sprint if I was allowed to drive a car when everyone else had to run. However, I've never been in a sprint because I am slow and am not allowed to use a car. This is the generation of no consequences. Sorry man, nowhere is it written that Major League Sports need to bend rules to ensure their players have a better shot at being great. You're either great or your not.
BTS Community Moderator Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 DeGrom MRI came back clean. I wonder how the Mets handle this. He's recently missed time/left starts with a lat issue, elbow issue, and shoulder issue. Feels like he should be shut down for a few weeks regardless of what the MRIs are showing.

Yeah he should be shut down and then progress through a throwing program.

I still think sweat and rosin works, or let them bring out a bottled water to the rosin bag, that's more than enough for grip.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 I don’t think any of you guys understand what a new baseball feels like vs a baseball that you have the ability to grip. Yes I know they mud the balls beforehand but it’s clearly an inconsistent process. These guys are using a new ball virtually every hitter. I’m all for controlling the use of gripping agents, but it’s tiring listening to people call these guys cry babies or cheaters without really understanding what it’s like. It’s insane to change (or start enforcing) rules midway through a season in any sport.

That is utter nonsense. Dont you think its a bit arrogant to assume no one on this board has ever pitched before? I would assume that many of us have, either in Little League, High School or College. Now, I am not saying those things are the same as the Majors, not even close. However, a game always starts with a brand new ball, and in my experience anytime a ball hits the ground, the Ump throws you another new ball. Its the way the game works. These guys have legal things to help them grip the ball, they need to use those. Anyone making up excuses for them, is, in my opinion, on the side of cheating and petulance. On the Gerrit Cole thing, I am in no way implying he wouldnt have made the majors. He has tremendous physical talent. But if he is that emotional because he cant grip the thing he is being paid millions to GRIP and THROW, then maybe he shouldnt be doing that. What I am saying is if he doesnt like the rules of the game, he can move on. I am also implying he may have cheated to achieve his level of talent given the fact he had one season of sub 3.00 ERA prior to going to Houston. The guy was 19-22 in the two years before he moved on from the Pirates. What I am saying is he went from being a decent pitcher to being a great pitcher by cheating.

You wanna know what kinda of balls are used in little league, high school or college? Balls that are beat on the ground, hit, chewed up. They aren’t using pearls every single time a ball is fouled out of play. If you’ve pitched at any of these levels you WILL understand the impact that has.

You think grassroots baseball you get a new ball every time it touches the dirt?

If you’ve pitched at any of these levels you WILL understand the impact that has. When did you play baseball? Thats a serious question. Because I havent played ball in 12 years now and every game I've pitched from High School through College (Division III), started the game with multiple games balls held by each team, and the Ump had a sack full of game balls as well. You make it sound like everyone outside of the pros are using the ball the Beast chewed up in the Sandlot, its not accurate at all. I coach my sons 12u team now and they even start with six brand spankin new balls, not including the others the ump keeps.

I don’t think he implied that at all, he’s saying Cole is being overdramatic. Im sure he can pitch just fine with rosin. He might lose that extra 200rpm spin but he never should have had that in the first place, because he was cheating.
BuffaloWings Verified Member Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 You think grassroots baseball you get a new ball every time it touches the dirt? The balls are rotated throughout the game. As I said in my other post, even in 12u you start with Six game balls, plus what the UMP has. If the ball touches the dirt when pitching, yes they are give one of the other balls.

If Ohtani keeps up what he's doing he's going to win the MVP even if he's multiple WAR behind Vlad.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2021 Posted June 18, 2021 (edited) I haven't looked at it, but the headline implies he's upset about the tack? If he is f*** em', they went too far. Okay after watching that, it wasn't bad at all. If he was bitching about not using tack, sure. They can have some water for the rosin bag, or a sealed tube of sunscreen like Laika suggested, hitters wouldn't care. There is two sides to this issue, as a few have suggested as well. There's safety here for both the hitters and pitchers. Edited June 18, 2021 by Spanky99

Latest News Jun 17, 11:50 PM EDT EDT Sanchez (biceps) exited his rehab start Thursday with a blister, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Sanchez left the outing after completing only 1.1 innings on 50 pitches. The good news is that the injury is not an aggravation of his biceps issue, though he will likely still remain sidelined for some additional time.
