MLB is testing new rules.

 

#1 - move the mound back a foot. Nobody likes seeing so many strikeouts.

#2 - double hook DH. Once you pull your starting pitcher, you lose your DH. Too many pitching changes during a game.

 

Apparently a 93.9 MPH fastball at 61 feet is equivalent to a 91.6 MPH fastball at 60 feet.

 

I like both of these. Seems like everyone is throwing high 90s these days. And #2 would almost eliminate the opener I would think.

Yeah I'm good with both of these changes. Taijuan Walker and TJ Zeuch are hitting 96 on the gun nowadays, never mind the relievers who come in. Combine the ridiculous velocity every pitcher seems to have with the deadened ball and it's just going to make strike outs even more out of control. Moving the mound back would be a way to even things out a bit and hopefully lead to more contact. I also despise the opener so if the double hook forces teams to keep starters in longer, then I'm down for that.

 

Analytics in baseball have hurt the aesthetic value of the game more than any other sport. They can't ban analytics, so they need to work around it. I'm fine with moves like this, plus some of the changes they are going to try out in the minors to get more SB's.

When did they change where they measured MPH from, as I know that's increased what the gun reads also - but I generally agree. They need to find a way to reduce strikeouts dramatically, have more balls in play, increase the value of defense and base running and reduce the number of pitching changes.

 

I wonder what the effect of lowering the mound would be (seeing as we've had that in baseball before already). I have to imagine they considered that first - also curious what the impact to injuries would be.

 

What era do you guys think was best? I think baseball in the heart of the steroid era (late '90's early 00's) was the best. Guys were crushing home runs, but we also had guys stealing 50+ bases a year. Big time power guys were striking out in the low 20% range, with most others between 10% and 20%. Great pitchers were striking out 7 to 8 per 9 innings and you still had 25 starting pitchers with ERA's below 3.5.

 

Maybe it's nostalgia, but for me - that's the type of baseball I want to see.

Roboumps will reduce K's. Anyone else notice the number of K's from pitches way outside the zone? Roboumps will force more pitches in the zone = more balls in play.

 

And spin rate seems to be higher with this new ball, been watching videos of sick pitch movement all spring.

 

f***ing around with the pitcher's mound should be the last resort.

I really hope they don't move the bases. For reasons I can't quite articulate, moving the mound back/forward or up/down as needed seems like acceptable tinkering, but all of that should happen inside the 90-foot square of the infield.

I've never pitched, but I was wondering this too. I feel like if you've been honing a breaking pitch for 15-20 years, it's not easy to just back it up by a foot. I could be 100% wrong though.

No different than changing the mound height. If anything I’d think a mound height change would throw them off even more.
