It's funny, breaking a tooth eating a steak. Only Buxton.

It's a pretty dumb tweet. She's been in the league a lot of years and was obviously qualified for the job. We don't see these kinds of tweets for every new GM, much less ones with as much experience as Ng does. It has a very clear patronizing tone which I can see why people wouldn't be a fan of it.

I agree.

Nick Markakis is retiring. We've talked a few times here about his pursuit for 3,000 hits and what that would mean, but he evidently won't get there.

Solid career for Nick. Another 'makes me feel old' moment as I remember when he first came up and had a ton of early success. Such a pure hitter.

Came here to post this. We don’t have to worry about Nick Markakis riding 3000 hits to the HoF anymore.

Full attention to the Starlin Castro 3000 hit watch.

deGrom hit 102 on the gun yesterday, lol... unreal.

So if DeGrom wins another CY this year, does that punch his ticket to Cooperstown?

Would probably be looking at like 41 fWAR, 3 CYs, and like a career 2.5 ERA through age 33.

I would hope so, lol.

I vote yes - the guy is a f***ing stud.

I was hoping he would get it last year, and IMO deserved it due to being in a significantly harder division than the other contestants. I would really hope that would make his case, although I think he'd still need to approach or surpass the 50 WAR threshold so his dominance is spread out over a 10 year period in which 4-5 of those he was the best pitcher on the planet.

He debuted at 26. Is that too late to get started? Longevity is often a big factor.

He's sitting at 70 career wins. Yes...I know. But my point is it still carries weight...regardless if it should or not. How long can he keep up this pace?

Like Org said above, I don't know that he has to keep it up much longer. I think it would be enough to put up another CY or CY caliber season, then a couple of 3-5 win seasons. A 10-year stretch as the best pitcher in baseball over that period, with 50-fWAR, 2-3 CYs, and a sub-3 ERA probably does the trick.

It will help if he can play a big role in a WS win (probably won't happen) and avoid bad association of being an albatross to his team on a rich multi-year deal later in his career.

What sort of precedent is there for starters without the big Win totals in the HOF? Koufax had the most ridiculous last 5 years of his career I've ever seen.

I think Kershaw's 2013-2016 is as impressive - except he didn't throw 300+ innings a year.

The precedents are being set these days with the post millennium starters. Roy Halladay didn't get 200 wins. Scherzer might not get there. Chris Sale - if he comes back from his surgery at a high level - probably won't even sniff 180.

I don't think this matters much. We are only just now dealing with starters from the era where many aren't going to put up high win totals. In 10 - 20 years there will be a lot of viable candidates who don't have 200+ wins.

I hope you're right. I'm just not as convinced that those f***ers are willing to change their ways.

By many historic measures Roy Halladay was not a slam dunk candidate but he got in pretty easily. Sure he went and died and that helped... I wonder if the voters would have made a living Roy Halladay wait multiple ballots.

Halladay --

203-100, 2 Cys, 5 top 3 Cy finished, 7 top 5

3 or so 8 WAR seasons. 200-30 k/bb a couple times.

And his best season (2005) probably ended before the All Star Break

Is there anybody from another era with that kind of record that didn't get in because of "only" 200 wins?

Posted

Bret Saberhagen and David Cone are somewhat similar to Halladay I think ... a touch below

Looks like neither even sniffed the hall of fame... which is weird. Halladay was better and had more big seasons than those guys... but not 100 times better

Posted

Looks like out of Halladay's top 10 comparables on bbref, only one made the Hall of Fame

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/v/vanceda01.shtml

Pretty similar actually, 3 real big years, 5 or 7 pretty good years, less wins than most hall of famers.

His big season was 300 innings and 30 complete games... lol, it was 1924, that's pretty equivalent to 250 innings and 10 complete games or whatever in the 2000s

EDIT: Looks like there was a big war in the first part of his career, which he must have been involved in during his prime years... I guess that explains the hall of fame induction, with what at first appears to be a modest (especially for the time) win total.

What other active staring pitchers are likely to get in?

Verlander

Kershaw

Scherzer?

Bumgarner?

I would have said Felix Hernandez was on track easily once upon a time but damn his second half of his career has been awful and there's no way now

Greinke actually has a good chance. Over 200 wins and had quite a good peak.

Cole if he can stay healthy for 6 more years. Big if.

degrom will be the interesting case. He started late, doesn't have the win totals but if he remains dominant for the next 4 or 5 years I don't see how you could keep him out of the hall.
