Lourdes' standing as a finalist seems even more weird at first, given that the finalists are completely metrics-based this year.

Historically, the Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners have been determined by a vote from 30 managers' and up to six of their respective coaches. Each manager and coach vote from a pool of qualified players in their League and cannot vote for players from their own team. In 2013, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, as part of its collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). The SABR Defensive Index™ (SDI) has previously comprised approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the managers and coaches' vote continuing to carry the majority.

Due to the compressed 2020 season, the Award qualifications have been amended to rely solely on the SDI which draws on and aggregates two types of existing defensive metrics: those derived from batted ball location-based data and those collected from play-by-play accounts. SDI utilizes MLBAM's Statcast, Sports Information Solutions data, and STATS, LLC data as well as traditional statistics with advanced analysis. For 2020 Award consideration, pitchers must have pitched at least 50 innings, catchers must have played in at least 29 games and infielders/outfielders must have completed at least 265 defensive innings. Each player qualifies at the position he has played at most (SDI is only for play at qualified position).

But then you realize that there were only 8 players in the American League that had the requisite 265 innings in LF. LINK

I'm still not quite sure how Lourdes made the final three. He's not in the top three in Statcast's Outs Above Average (counting stat), Statcast's Success Rate Added (rate stat), or DRS. His UZR was slightly better than Tucker and Rosario. Gurriel must have gotten some points in " traditional statistics with advanced analysis" - whatever the hell that means.

Highlight plays, I guess. His arm was on display this year and he made a bunch of diving catches.

Really not enjoying this older, wiser version of Spanky who shows up tuned every night and then makes no fantasy baseball trades.

This explains why a couple of players I've never even heard of are nominees (Mendick, Hoerner) and lot of players (including those 2) who didn't play that many games and make Ryan Goins look like a ML hitter. Historically, you've had to be a true stud defender to get nominated if you can't hit (not that I ever agreed with that).

Would be nice to see Alex Gordon win one more in the year he retires. Otherwise - don't care.

Not saying you have to know every player, but you've never heard of top 50 prospect Nico Hoerner?

Fair enough. I definitely try and stay up to date on the top prospects (around the league + on each team), but this name just completely alludes me. I quit all fantasy sports back 3-4 years ago and I definitely am starting to see a decline in my general knowledge of new players around the league. I guess that exposed me to more ridicule.

I did look him up (before posting) and saw he was the 24th overall pick. I guess there's supposed to be more in his bat moving forward (and he falls into the Nick Madrigal mold), but his bat looks pitiful so far.

Buck just couldn't resist. He says this year the Gold Glove winners should have an asterisk because managers couldn't vote. Says he hopes this is the last and only time that we only use statistics.

Don't blame Buck wanting stats tossed with his career .225 average and his .465 winning percentage as a manager!

Jays need better defense at SS and CF. Give me a GG guy candidate there.

How legit are the lists when Jackie Bradley jr and Kiermaier aren't included

Why would the MLB name GG winners on election night, lol...

MLB is out of touch with their fans.

Happy to see Alex Gordon win the GG in his final season. The fact that Alex Gordon is retiring makes me feel super old.

Because nobody cares about GG winners...
