Merryweather SP depth in AAA.

Uh, no. f*** that. Merryweather might have like 200 IP to give for the rest of his professional life... I hope the organization doesn't waste a single bullet in AAA. He looked like an impact MLB arm when healthy. They shouldn't invest at all in 2021 if they are going to send their best* RP to AAA.

*or at least close to their best

Borucki is a SP unless his arm just can't handle it. He had 1.7 WAR in 97 IP in his rookie debut. Since then he's added a slider and velocity (he won't be 95 as a SP but he's probably over 91).

He could be 93-94 with 4 pitches. He was going 0.1 and 0.2 IP last year. The f*** are we doing.

He has the Patrick Corbin starter kit with that disgusting slider.

A lot of the arms have SP traits. Thing is, the team just needs to put some of them right into the MLB pen just based on depth. They can't all start.

Ryu

Pearson

*assume one MLB addition

Ray

Stripling

Roark

Merryweather

Borucki

Gooch

Hatch

Kay

Thornton

Zoinks

Murphy

Wag

SRF

If they are all starting then, barring injury, you don't even have room in the AA rotation for SWR, Murray, Luciano, Manoah.

So you need to pick some relievers. And you can't put s***** depth starters into the pen and expect them to succeed, so the tough thing is that if you want good relievers you kind of need to make tough decisions and plop some good arms in the pen.

Morosi's wording makes it sound like the Jays are desperate.

I agree - most of our best SP depth needs to end up in our bullpen....and I suspect those guys (Merryweather, Hatch, Murphy, etc.) will end up as some of our best options.

The question is - does this impact their ability to develop as starters? It seems the thought process on this is constantly changing.

I thought we banned Morosi updates on this board. If not, we should. f*** him.

Yeah as teams move towards restricting starter workloads the distinction between SP and RP becomes less important. Some of these guys like Kay, Hatch, Borucki will end up with a stat page like Ross Stripling's career to date.

Reminds me of back in the day at the bars and nightclubs... If I was not already with someone to take home and it was near closing time, I would have have to do some shots, lower my standards a little and start shot gunning intros.. Sometimes it worked, but sometimes when the music stopped I went home solo... I was and I am a Blue Jay fan...

It will be interesting what the high performance team decides for him this year as they clearly coddled him with kids gloves last year.

(I know he says he dropped it for a cutter but I would probably still say that he throws a slider)

You realize the guy you ended up going home with lowered his standards as well

Listening to Morosi on the radio list his HOF ballot which includes Mark Buehrle

I don't think Buehrle is a hall of famer, but he did have 214 wins. An ERA of 3.81 and he played the first half of his career in the steriod era. He was one of the best fielders at his position and might hold the record for pick offs.

I don't think he's a hall of famer, but kind of glad he will last more than a year. He was one of my favourite players while he was here.

So, basically any players left over that sign with us are lowering their standards also? Or getting what they can get.. You might be right.. LOL

He is probably legitimately asking for action, but Teo's response could possibly be a hint Taijuan is resigning

Edit:

and now Taijuan just retweeted this:

Would be neither excited nor upset at having Walker back

Though I'd rather trade for someone better and spend free agent $$ on CF and 3B

Wouldn't be too hurt at Walker but hope the dollar value is good. I'm still hoping that we will do a lot more than just re-sign our own free agents.

Pretty much this and add a high end reliever. Springer, Bryant and Hand.

Around 10M I wouldnt be mad about it at all. We need a lot more depth and an extra arm at that price is a no brainer IMO.

Walker and Ray as 4-5 starters is pretty good, as #2-3 guys not so much. Will still need another top of the rotation guy and hope Pearson takes a step to sniff the playoffs next year

Anyone know how options worked last year? I see some players used up an option (Merryweather, Waguespack, Murphy, SRF) but others (Luciano) did not.

I don't think there was anything different, at least as far as using up an optional assignment year goes. Luciano should have burned one. Mistake on RR?

Sign Walker and one of Paxton or Tanaka.

Ryu

Tanaka or Paxton

Pearson

Walker

Ray

Works for me. Then we have quite a few depth guys (or Simeon Woods Richardson) to fill in for injuries or if Ray/Walker totally implode.

That's a realistic rotation to obtain and I could live with it

There is perhaps more than an average amount of injury risk there but like you say we have the depth to back it up

Bauer instead of Paxton or Tanaka would be much better but possibly not worth the cost differential and I still want money for CF and 3B. So it might make more sense to spread it around.

Zero interest in Walker. Some people will see this is an unreasonable opinion but I don't even expect him to be better than Roark or Kay.
