2022Playoffs Verified Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Should be prime time for executing renovations at the Rogers Centre, should be no excuse for time frames, lack of Rogers’s money. When else would they have such an ideal time to perform upgrades honestly?? Position the stadium for the next wave of players and Future playoffs!!!
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 They're planning big things for the Rogers centre and the downtown area complex, not just minor upgrades. This level of construction work will take a long time and permits from multiple levels of government, those things don't get approved overnight. Their plan is to reimagine that entire area with amenities, hotels, vendors, transportation, etc. It seems like a good idea to "get stuff done" when the dome is empty, but it's actually pretty difficult to put into practice. There's just not enough time and things don't move that quickly, especially during a pandemic.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 In perfect world they would use this time to get some much needed work done. But in reality nothing will probably happen. In a perfect world they just knock the Rogers Centre down and actually build a Baseball stadium in its place.

Or is this all dependant on what happens with the proposed Rail Deck Park?

philly30 Verified Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 I don't understand all the hate for the Rogers Centre, I have been there multiple times and think it is fine, of course not the best but certainly not the worst. Places like Fenway and the old Yankee stadium which are revered are truly dumps, Tampa, Oakland, these places are true garbage an by far the worst. Rogers Centre is a decent place but I have the minority view I guess

Some renovations like removing some seating and properly directing all seating towards home plate would go a long way.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 The seats at the Rogers Centre is so bad, I don't even want to go to games cause I sit down and my knees are touching the back of the persons head in front of me.

Rogers Centre is a decent place but I have the minority view I guess I tend to agree, which is why I was really surprised it ranked as the 3rd worst in MLB. I've been to Boston, NY, Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cincy, Philly, Baltimore and Washington and while I prefer most of those stadiums to the dome - I wasn't left thinking the dome is a complete s*** hole compared to those parks...while also factoring in that going to something new is naturally going to seem 'better' when compared to a stadium you've been to plenty of times.

As Laika said - adjusting the seats (direction, spacing, etc.) and reducing the capacity some would go a LONG way to improving the experience. The dome still is enjoyable when the roof is open and the CN Tower is in the backdrop. I think there's still room to add some more lipstick before they need a new one.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 I will agree that the Rogers Centre is much better when the roof is open. So much so that I only go to games when the roof is open. But Baseball should be played in an open air stadium. If they want to slap some kind of retractable roof like Milwaukee has fine but no reason why you can’t have an open air stadium built for Baseball in Downtown Toronto. If you can have one in Minnesota you can have one here.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Be careful what you wish for. There is one and only one way this city ever gets a new baseball stadium. And that's if the Dome is torn down, Rogers sells the land to condo developers for $$$$$$$$$$$$ and picks up some land elsewhere for $$$$ and builds a new stadium there. Even speaking from a logistical point of view, there is no place in the downtown core with enough space to put a baseball stadium except where it is right now. That means it would have to be torn down and rebuilt and that's a multi-year project. Or the new one is build in the suburbs, the area around Cherry Beach or the Toronto islands.

IMO it only feels crappy in there when they have the roof closed on a nice day where it should be open. Like how they won’t open it before mid-May usually. Also the turf thing... If we’re talking about the stadium itself, RC is extremely similar to Oakland, Milwaukee, and Dodger stadium. Concrete and boring. Some people put way too much emphasis on the exterior view/backdrop. Like yeah Dodger stadium is a nice field and has a great view, but the stadium itself is pretty meh. And Wrigley is a f***ing dump.

Rogers doesn't own the land, the Crown does & they don't own the land underneath the Dome. The original owners still own it. There was a stipulation in the sale that states the land must be used for a sports stadium or a casino. I'm all for a stadium at Ontario Place or a tear down & rebuild, though I doubt either of things will come to fruition.

Are you saying the Crown owns the land 'around' the dome and someone else owns the land within the building footprint? That is messed up.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Have you been to Miller Park??? Milwaukee has a very nice and great stadium! Yes, its fine but nothing special. Looks cool but its still very concrete like the RC. Also feels very enclosed because the roof doesn’t move out of the way much.
Perfect Game Verified Member Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Are you saying the Crown owns the land 'around' the dome and someone else owns the land within the building footprint? That is messed up. From the article I read it sounds like The Crown owns the entire circumference above ground, it's just unfortunate that their hands are tied as to what they can build on it. The sellers must have been clairvoyant realizing that eventually they'd pave paradise to put up a condo lot. Rogers does own the building.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Are you saying the Crown owns the land 'around' the dome and someone else owns the land within the building footprint? That is messed up. No, this wouldn't be the case. I think the Canada Lands Company is the registered owner of the "Stadium Lands". See the map: https://en.clc.ca/sites/default/files/TorontoStadiumLands_Overlay.jpg Note that CLC also owns other lands around this parcel. Rogers would own a long-term lease with CLC. Rogers can't sell the land because they don't own it. In theory they could sell the lease... There might be a restrictive covenant registered on title that says the land is only ever to be used as a sports and entertainment stadium. This would have been registered when it was transferred from the prior owner to the CLC.
