BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 My son played with Owen from 7 years old to 14. Just taken off, he hit a monster HR off a 26 year old Blue Jay farm hand when our jr Nationals played the Jays this spring. Has grown to over 6'4" and 220 pounds and he is still just 17 years old. Plus runner, 90 MPH + velocity on throws. This kid will hit!!! I was hearing won't get past Detroit 3.1 so Jays either take him in round 2 or lose him. Now there is no sure thing he signs either. Full ride to Michigan and he can re-enter draft @ 19 That’s awesome, I hear he’s got some serious raw power and a great athlete. Sounds like a real upside player. I personally like Owen Caissie more than Calabrese, if we had to choose one Canadian kid this draft. But there’s definitely a lot of talent coming up locally.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Damn, that's a lot of cash. How much did you think he'd get?
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 He will get more than 2/3 of the pool. The slot value is already 64%. I’m guessing closer 3/4 or 75%
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Damn, that's a lot of cash. 2/3 of the Jays total is only $6.48M. It would actually be amazing if we signed him for that. It's less than $300K over slot. Couple of Jim's with a bad take on this one...
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 How much did you think he'd get? Ah I read it wrong. Somewhere north of $7M is my guess.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Anyone else having issues with the board? Might just be mods but every time i try to edit a post it deletes it. Anyway i was responding to Brownie about how he hates this stuff. I love it! Blue Rocky and I have been chatting about things you can do to make sure Martin is a Jay...guaranteed 2021 call up has huge value. The mentioned Caissie signing makes sense (although as we found out with Paxton and Brown being Canadian does not mean auto value signing).
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 So basically everyone else f***ed up and Mookie Betts fell to us? The one year I don’t follow the draft at all lol.

My understanding is guaranteeing MLB roster spot as part of negotiations is policy violation? I thought I heard that... Could be wrong.. Yesterday I was smoking crack and was wrong a few times..

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 (edited) So ignoring slot values, who is the top guy available you want at 42? You asked this already last night, bro? Masyn Winn. Edited June 11, 2020 by Spanky99

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 So ignoring slot values, who is the top guy available you want at 42? Jared Jones
metafour Verified Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Jared Kelley - Pearson'esque He's really not. Poor breaking ball spin from him. Pitching models don't like him at all. Super overrated by MLB.com.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 (edited) Tanner Witt for me. Tanner Witt sounds very much a Blue Jays pick. I want Cole Wilcox but don’t think we have the pool $, he’s a draft-eligible sophomores looking for first round money. What they do at 42 will be very telling of the bonus situation with Martin. If we go way underslot here, we are probably safe for a normal draft with 77, 106, 136. But this could indicate the Jays are moderately concerned about not having enough $ to get the deal done, as you’re giving up the opportunity at a real talent at 42. If we go over-slot and get a legit guy, we might be punting the next three picks. This is probably the way they go if there’s clarity about the bonus situation with Martin. We’ll get two legit guys and the rest will be lottery tickets (including the 20k guys). 5% overslot money = $485,825 Pick 42 = $1,771,100 Pick 77 + 106 + 136 = $1,764,700 Edited June 11, 2020 by BlueRocky
Beans Verified Member Posted June 11, 2020 Author Posted June 11, 2020 For those who've not kept up with every single pick so far, here's the board:
EZe Verified Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Seems we always do really well in that sandwich + 2nd round range. I’d lean towards allocating underslot with the later rounds. We can’t blow the whole budget + overage on Martin. I can see going over slot but there is some leverage. With current world events I think there’s even more incentive to not delay turning pro.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Promise him that. So is agreeing to a pre-draft deal and the kids having an agent. Both of those still happen. I guess the part about un-drafted is the catch...? Bob Wagner (Oakland, CA): Could a team sign an undrafted for the obligatory 20K, then place him on active ML roster where he has to be paid at least the minimum salary? J.J. Cooper: There would be a massive MLB investigation immediately, as teams are not allowed to promise a player a spot on the MLB roster at any point in the future as an inducement to sign. Such a move would likely be assumed to be a circumvention of the rules immediately, and then the team would have to prove that somehow this was all above board. If it was proven that such a roster spot had been promised to convince the player to sign, it is likely the MLB team would face significant penalties and potentially the suspension/firing of front office officials.
metafour Verified Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 What the f*** is Baltimore doing LMAO?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 So the Orioles legit just tried to save money, or they really think Hjerstad's that good, lol.
