Rendon was a Boras client in a similar situation prior to slot values. He signed on the last day. We will have to sweat this out for quite a while. I think I would save a good amount of cushion

There is going to be a s*** ton of great talent available for the Jays in Round 2

College Pitchers

JT Ginn

Clayton Beeter

Cole Wilcox

Logan Allen

Christian Roa

Chris McMahon

College Bats

Dillon Dingler

Zach DeLoach

Casey Martin

High School Arms

Tanner Witt

Masyn Winn

Dax Fulton

Jared Kelley

Who do you guys want? Who's your guy?

I like Beeter, but Tanner Witt would be insane if we can afford him.

Double down on Boras and pick up JT Ginn too.

It doesn't really matter how long it takes to sign, there's not going to be a minor league season this year.

He can go back and get drafted as a senior. Boras would convince him to do that out of spite then spend the next 12 months bad mouthing the Blue Jays for being a cheap large market team.

Yes - but as a SR, he'd have absolutely zero leverage. That seems highly unlikely.

Alex Santos?

Calabrese, the Cdn Benintendi?

I'd like to see them take a prep guy here and save some $$, a high risk / high reward type.

Austin Wells went to the Yankees.

Since players are only getting 100K up front it does give some leverage to the players. Boras can say well Martin will be a top 3 pick in the draft next year so better pay him 7.5M. I think Boras will try to bluff asking for full slot for #2 pick but if you have everyone sign before Martin and the Jays have 7.2-7.5M left of pool space itd be super tough for Martin not to sign.

For sure worth it to pay him the $ it takes up to 7.8M though considering you are getting a top talent at #5.

whoops - I was just looking at players projected to go before the 42nd pick in various mocks. Figures I'd f*** one guy up. Thanks.

I don't think he'll be there by our pick, but Beeter would be an interesting choice. There is a risk but high upside. You might be able to sign him for lower than slot and free up some money for Martin.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/austin-martin-falls-to-blue-jays-at-fifth-overall/

The first real surprise of the night came when the Orioles passed on Vanderbilt star Austin Martin, the No. 2 player in the BA 500, in favor of Arkansas outfielder Heston Kjerstad. Martin’s slide did not stop there, as two more teams passed on him before he was picked by the Blue Jays at fifth overall.

Blue Jays scouting director Shane Farrell admitted he did not expect to see Martin’s name still on the board by the time his team was on the clock.

“I think we were a little surprised. Obviously we’re keeping an eye on the mock drafts as they come out throughout the week and we’re aware of industry consensus, but I think it really started to shake up at picks two and three,” Farrell said on a call with media members following the selection. “We were surprised a little bit, but certainly prepared to make that selection and we’re ecstatic to have the chance to pick Austin.”

Martin joins one of the top farm systems in baseball as a shortstop, a position he rarely played at the college level. During his first two seasons at Vanderbilt, Martin suited up at third base before playing center field for Team USA’s Collegiate National Team last summer and for Vanderbilt this spring. It was that level of defensive versatility that stood out to Farrell.

“He’s obviously played a lot of different spots at Vanderbilt and the fact that he’s shown the defensive ability to play multiple spots up the middle is exciting and valuable in team-building,” Farrell said.

Martin is a plus runner and has the defensive ability to play multiple positions at the next level, including shortstop, but his pure hitting ability is what sets him apart from other players. He has exceptional bat speed, outstanding contact ability and strong plate discipline—Martin walked 85 times in his collegiate career compared to just 82 strikeouts—and improving above-average power.

In 140 games at the college level, Martin posted a .368/.474/.532 slash line and improved at the plate each year. After hitting .338/.452/.414 with one home run and 19 RBI as a freshman, Martin turned in a phenomenal sophomore campaign, hitting .392/.486/.604 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI while leading Vanderbilt to the national championship and earning first-team All-American honors. In 16 games this spring, Martin continued to mash with a .377 average, three home runs and 11 RBI.

While Farrell said he’s unsure of where Martin will start his pro debut, there’s no doubt that he will be able to contribute right away wherever it is.

Let's say, for arguments sake, that the Jays decide to give Martin #2 money. $7.8M.

In that instance, it would leave them about $2.4M for rounds 2-5 (that includes the 5% overage).

So, they could theoretically give $1.6m fo the #42nd pick, $790K for the 77th...and then they'd need to sign a couple of $5K guys in round 4 and 5.

I hope that we don't have to draft a College Senior or two in order to scrape together enough coin for Boras' liking.

College seniors are allowed to go back for a 5th year so not as many will be willing to do the 20K thing. You need a family member of a front office member who was registered for the draft

Kiley has Beeter as the 3rd best pitcher in the draft, Witt 6th and Logan Allen 9th. Let's get one of them.

These are our next pick values, I'm still in the mindset you go high upside for pick 42 and find the money in the other picks. We were able to land Kendall Williams for around that price last draft, would love to see another high upside arm like that.

42 - $1.77m

77 - $805.60K

106 - $549.00K

136 - $410.10K

If we need an extra $1M for Martin - then punt the 4th and 5th pick.

This s*** ass 5 round draft is f***ing us over a bit......

I am 99.9% sure our pick will be a pitcher. It is just a matter of who. But we are definitely in a great position to get a really good arm. I think Witt is more of a safer pick for teams ahead of us.

I wouldn't be surprised if we select a pitcher with our 3rd pick as well. 4th and 5th could be big reaches to save money depending on how the draft shakes out. I am fine with taking risks with the rest of our picks because we probably got the steal of the draft with Martin at 5. Nothing is for sure in any draft but Martin is probably as solid as you're going to get in any draft. It allows us to go big the rest of the way.

Ideally I'd like to see us select a pitcher tomorrow, but after getting Martin at #5, I'll be happy with whoever... :)

Maybe already posted. However Max Meyer and the Marlins already have a deal. That was quick.

You can bet there will be a lot of signings announced soon after the draft. Not really much reason to waste time dickering over money when there’s only 5-8 guys per team to sign. Chances are the majority of them already have deals agreed to verbally and just need to work out the minute details.

Unless they have Boras as their agent....

The talent in this crop available in second round is very deep. There’s a bunch more names than this.

I have a hard time seeing either Jared Kelley or JT Ginn sign without a very lucrative offer, we don’t have the money to pull this trigger. Even Daxton Fulton would require a significant bonus or he’ll choose college. But this is all just speculation. If we had to pick from who was left:

Pitchers: Cole Wilcox > Jared Jones = Tanner Witt = Chris McMahon > Masyn Winn = Clayton Beeter = Cole Henry > Alex Santos = Carson Montgomery > Connor Phillips > CJ Van Eyk

I could change my mind but that’s my current preference, don’t mind the order too much I didn’t thinking too hard about it. I don’t know some of these guys well enough to be convicted into one name, but heard good things about all the guys above to some degree.

Position players: Casey Martin > Dillon Dingler > Enrique Bradfield = Daniel Cabrera > Chase Davis = Zach DeLoach > Kevin Parada > Petey Halpin > Blaze Jordan > Freddy Zamora = Anthony Servideo = Yohandy Morales
