Laika Community Moderator Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 Right, maybe. Although the team with the damaged goods is the Twins, not the Dodgers. The three way deal makes it a mess. Twinkies probably thought of Graterol as a reliever anyway so from their perspective he is what he is. Hard to imagine them ponying up more for Maeda when Graterol for Maeda was already arguably a bit of an overpay.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 The Dodgers are the team that will have their fanbase mutiny if this doesn't go down. I don't think there is a lot of pressure on the Twins to get this done.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Big market teams operating like the Rays would be boring as hell. That's likely part of the backlash here. The Red Sox should not be making value driven decisions by trading a HOF level talent in his 20's. The Rays doing it is one thing since they trade anyone who makes a 7 figure salary, and they have no fanbase to add revenue, but the Red Sox draw 3 mil a year and are a cash cow. They shouldn't have to do this, even if it might make some baseball sense (Betts wants to test FA, they get more years of control, etc). Meh. The Red Sox were the Rays before the Rays existed since selling off Babe Ruth. Not in the smart analytical aspect but the cheapness aspect. The fan base will get used to it again.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Somebody get Carlos Danger on the phone to close this thing. This is more like the Kris Bryant & Jack Flaherty trade vs the Ohtani trade. In The KB & JF trade, I thought we were getting pick 1-1. When the trade went through, it was actually 1-3. So, I would be like Boston and the other team would be like the Twinkies - Goods not as advertised. In my case, after much back and forth the other team (Twinkies) had to add a piece to compensate for the difference in 1-1 & 1-3. However, the other team didn't really have anything, I wanted and of equal value to compensate. Therefore, they had to reach out to another team, trade for a piece and then offer it to me in compensation. Much like real life, our deal was dependent on another deal with a third party going through. If one part failed, he whole house of cards came crashing down. I suspect, like exactly in my situation, the Twinkies will have to pony up something else for the Red Sox.. However, probably in the back of the Red Sox mind is that they are not going to find another team to take on the Price and Betts contract and give them something decent.. Very interesting situation and waiting to see what happens... I think the Twins have more leverage than the Red Sox.. But the Sox are in the right to ask for more if damaged goods..
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Is this a case of the Red Sox agreeing to the trade, seeing the backlash from the fans, and getting cold feet, or is there something legitimately wrong with Graterol that warrants another top prospect (which is apparently what the Sox are asking for)? This whole thing is ridiculous.

Yes I get that part, but seems like it would be a pretty easy fix (replace Graterol with someone else, add another prospect, etc). Instead it seems to be dragging and Rosenthal posted that the MLBPA is upset with the whole thing. Just seems more convoluted than it needs to be.

I think if the prospect is in the deal in the first place that is a prospect they really wanted and made sense and the other prospects did not. In this case, the Red Sox traded a SP and a CF and they got a pitcher and a CF back. The Twins have some decent OFs prospects etc but I am not aware of other Twins prospect pitchers equal to Graterol. The other thing, it was obvious to everyone the Twins were going to use Graterol as a RP vs SP and you have to ask your self if the team that knows him best is taking that approach.. Why??

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 The reports were that the Twins would use him out of the bullpen this year but this would not preclude his being an SP later. Again, why though? He was in the pen end of last year and that is understandable with inning limits etc. This year, they could stretch him out in ST and make him a starter IF he was fully healthy and they thought he was destined to be a SP. The fact they were not, should raise questions...
EZe Verified Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I'm super thrilled the Jays went SWR instead of Graterol as the crown piece in a Stro deal
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 The Twins have apparently backed out of the deal.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Gotta figure the Dodgers will pony up a young pitcher now

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Twins Pull Out Of Mookie Betts Trade By George Miller | February 8, 2020 at 2:13pm CDT The Twins no longer plan to complete their portion of the proposed three-team trade that would send Mookie Betts to the Dodgers, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune. As part of the trade, the Twins were expected to send right-hander Brusdar Graterol to the Red Sox, receiving Kenta Maeda in return and allowing the Dodgers to acquire Betts and David Price. However, after the Red Sox balked at Graterol’s medical reports with questions about his long-term role, they requested another prospect from the Twins. It now seems that the Twins will hang on to Graterol after further discussions with the Red Sox were unproductive. This, of course, produces a ripple effect that will likely have far-reaching consequences. The Dodgers and Red Sox, for their part, could still try to complete the trade themselves or rope in a new third team to facilitate the mega-deal, but for the time being, the prospect of a Betts trade appears to have hit a considerable setback. In its entirety, the trade would have sent Betts and David Price to the Dodgers, while Alex Verdugo and Graterol would wind up in Boston with Maeda joining the Twins. In addition, the Dodgers and Angels had agreed in principle to a trade that would send Joc Pederson and Ross Stripling to the crosstown Angels in exchange for Luis Rengifo and unidentified prospects. That deal, though, was contingent on the completion of the Dodgers/Red Sox/Twins swap and now itself appears in limbo.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I wonder who the Sox asked for as a replacement, Balazovic maybe?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Patrick Murphy for Maeda then?
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Patrick Murphy for Maeda then? If Boston balked at Graterol's medicals then I can't see them being over enthused about Murphy's then, dude probably looks like a jigsaw puzzle on an mri with his injury history.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 I love seeing unfortunate things happen to the Red Sox If feels more like to me that the Twins and Angels potentially would be the big losers in this if the whole trade falls apart.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 Convoluted, or Boston is having 2nd thoughts about the deal and has no problem torpedo'ing the whole thing. That’s my hunch. Kinda like the reverse AA/Marlins trade. That trade leaked and Jays fans nutted all over their keyboards, so AA didn’t back out even when Johnson failed his physical. This trade leaked, Red Sox fans hated it, and now Graterol is so damaged that a trade cannot he worked out. I mean maybe it is just as it seems (Graterol failed his physical and they can’t agree on a alternate trade) but seems fishy to me. Not a good start for the Red Sox GM.
Beans Verified Member Posted February 8, 2020 Posted February 8, 2020 If feels more like to me that the Twins and Angels potentially would be the big losers in this if the whole trade falls apart. Oh, I know, but they're collateral damage :-) f*** Boston!
