Guaranteed Semien is looking for a big deal

To get someone like him or Didi or Turner on a short deal would require some gambling. Toronto would basically have to wait until the end of the offseason and bet that the market for one of them will not develop.

It does sort of seem like Toronto is taking this approach and is going to lean on their roster flexibility to just sign whoever is left

There's a whole lot of guys who must be getting antsy. There sure seems like a lot more players to be bought than there are buyers. There may be quite a few free agents with no buyers or one buyer. Marcell Ozuna was 79% better than league average with the bat and I haven't even heard of teams kicking the tires on him.

Thats perhaps a specific case.

If rhe NL gets the DH again then the Braves prob resign him immediately

They may even have a gentelmans agreement in place

Shouldn't Kim have gotten an offer much greater to stay than what he got from the Padres... Especially considering what Justin Smoak got paid.

Trying to understand the comment about MLB teams offering more to Sugano than what he's getting offered in Asia.

Smoak got a one year deal in Japan. Japan pays a lot more than Korea. Sugano probably is getting a pretty high offer in Japan. Teams will have to offer at least 8 to 10 per year for 3 or 4 years I'm guessing.

Everyone now saying spring training and the regular season are going to start on time

Hopefully it works out that way

Hard to see him choosing the Jays over the West Coast or NY, but let's see what happens.

I'm so grateful for these posting players who have an actual deadline to give us something to talk about. 13 of top 65 free agents(according to MLB traderumors) have signed and 2 were qualifying offers and one was Kim who had a posting deadline.

Bauer’s contract talk leak was just the latest for at least all the major FA where they’re pushing for $$.. as they should.

I’m quite confident if Springer wanted to sign 5/125 tomorrow, he could. Same thing for the other guys. I also think the 2nd tier guys are doing same thing. Like Didi or Semien having a reasonable 2 year deal on the table but they want more

The chips will all fall soon but the posturing was inevitable, especially with Covid

Sugano - it is now being reported that he Mets are out on him. Interesting.

That leaves the Jays, Red Sox, and Giants as the rumoured teams.

Sugano would be a huge signing. He doesn't profile that differently from guys like Tanaka, Maeda, and Iwakuka, and they all are/were reliable rotation cogs after coming over.

Gotta think he's going to the West coast.

The Giants are my guess.

Yeah, the Jays offer is going to have to be significantly better than SF's for him to choose Toronto, IMO. The Mets being out is definitely a positive in regards to Sugano, but makes it more clear they are saving up for Springer.

West Coast teams have a massive advantage on these guys. It's been reported that Kim chose the Padres in part because he preferred the weather.

"The Red Sox made a strong bid for South Korean infielder Ha-Seong Kim before he agreed to a four-year, $28 million deal with the Padres.

Several reports in South Korea said Kim was wary of playing in cold weather and preferred a West Coast team."

Back in 2016, we examined the history of teams trading an ace at the trade deadline and during the offseason.

In short, teams that trade a frontline pitcher for a prospect-laden package at the trade deadline almost never receive equal value in return, while teams that wait until the offseason fare better.

On the heels of the Rays trading Blake Snell and the Cubs trading Yu Darvish to the Padres, it’s instructive to look at precedent once more. We’ve updated our findings through the end of the 2020 season to provide a clearer picture of how likely it is the players the Rays and Cubs acquired will actually outperform Snell and Darvish over the rest of their careers.

As in our previous stories, we examined every offseason trade in the wild-card era (1995 to present) involving an ace-caliber pitcher and measured the post-trade career wins above replacement (WAR) totals, as calculated by Baseball-Reference.com, of the players involved.

Because of the different dynamics between trading a player during the regular season and the offseason, only trades made in the offseason were considered.

Our baseline criteria is three-fold. The deal must involve a pitcher who:

(1) Finished in the top three in Cy Young Award voting within the previous three seasons

(2) Was the primary player in the trade

(3) Was traded for at least two players who had not yet exhausted prospect eligibility.

(The Roger Clemens trade before the 1999 season and the Mike Hampton trade after the 1999 season are not included because Clemens and Hampton were primarily traded for major leaguers. The trade of Dontrelle Willis in 2007 is not included because Miguel Cabrera was the primary player in the trade.)

Please note Baseball-Reference adjusts its WAR calculations every few years, so career WAR totals for some players may have changed between 2016 and 2020 even if they were no longer playing.

Does replacing Taylor with the subsequent flips even make a difference? Probably not much.

Drabek was the frustrating one.
