I'd probably offer Verlander something stupid like 3/45 if he is determined to rehab and come back. The team has the payroll room, you can't get a signing with more upside, and Toronto is apparently willing to waste real money on guys like Tanner Roark anyway...

Give JV $5M guaranteed money for his rehab year and then it's a 2/40 gamble afterwards. That's a deal that could suck or win the team a world series in 2022

A quick investigation reveals that Jamie Moyer got Tommy John at an age 10 years older than Justin Verlander will be getting his at.

Moyer came back and put up a 5.70 era for Colorado.

ERA isn't the best measure for those who follow the newer stats, and Jamie Moyer didn't rely on velocity, and it was only 50 innings.

But then again...

5.70 era isn't all that bad in Colorado

5.70 era isn't all that bad for a 49 year old

5.70 era isn't all that bad 1 year after TJ

Not sure how this pertains to Verlander. We need more samples I guess. Make a list of all guys 37 and older who got Tommy John and came back to MLB.

Long time posters have pointed out that they would like to see the scientific method used more on this illustrious board.

Almost impossible to use a real controlled study on this and it would be immoral. You could select all pitchers mid 30s and older and give half TJ, and the other half as control group. However the control group would know they didn't get TJ, even if you gave them a fake operation, they'd know whether their arm still works or not when they wake up.

One thing you can do is take all pitchers 35-39 who have had TJ and come back to MLB, and use them as Verlander's comparison group. It isn't really fair to start at Verlander's age and go up, because then Verlander is by definition the youngest in the group.

Just a small thing you could do to help make this place more scientific.

Todd Frazier could be the next Tim Wakefield:

A hybrid of Tim Wakefield and Nolan Ryan that throws some knuckling chin music to every batter to keep them off balance.

If Verlander wants to pitch then every GM will be willing to give him a decent one year deal. f***, he might get a two year deal. This is a Roger Clemens, Nolan Ryan type of pitcher. If he doesn’t retire he might be good for five more years!

I think it all depends on how he feels. He's the type of guy that will pitch until his fire goes out.

Some of them were closer to ass music

Giles (forearm) announced Monday in a post on his personal Instagram account that he will undergo Tommy John surgery, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.

Analysis

Giles was already believed to be done for the season after being diagnosed with a right flexor strain following his Sept. 15 relief appearance. The outing was Giles' second since being reinstated from the 45-day injured list, as he had previously been shut down for most of the season with the same injury. After receiving feedback from doctors, Giles determined that surgery was his best option to address the nagging arm injury. He'll likely be sidelined for the entire 2021 season while recovering from surgery, though he should be fully cleared for the start of spring training in 2022. With Giles set to become an unrestricted free agent this winter, a team could look to bring the right-handed reliever aboard on a low-cost, two-year deal that would allow his rehab program to be monitored more closely.

Two year deal with a team option for a third.

Seems like relievers don't often hit the ground running when they come back from TJS. I'd probably just pass on Giles.

That's why you need the 3rd year cheap option. Take his first year back to evaluate him, pay him like a lower-end middle reliever.

What kinda hockey nonsense is THIS?

Man, I'm unreasonably bothered when people use their dumb hockey terms in the glorious sport of baseball.

Damn. First and foremost, RIP to the 3 people, of course.

But he looked like a good prospect. He was great when the Blue Jays played the Bucs this spring.

MLB should really be putting in some effort to educate about this. Its obviously a culture issue in the DR, as it seems to happen every damn year. Not sure it would make a difference or not, but I think they need to try.

We need Ang to weigh in, but yes driving in DR is f'ing crazy and the local police don't do a damn thing.

If he had mlb money he prob could’ve bought his way out.

He’ll have another chance though. Looks like max he’s facing is 5 years and he prob won’t get the max.

Seeing as he killed Dominicans and not Americans, I doubt there will be an outcry on his second chance

Altuve sitting at 73 wRC+ wow

Expected him to have a down year but that's an insane drop off. Bregman also fell off a cliff

You hate to see it

It's as if not knowing the pitch selection makes it harder to hit.
