Nothing like hiring an old man with old-man mentality to manage a young up and coming team full of flair. This looks like a move that came from the very top, pretty disgusting hire honestly.

 

I'm super intrigued to see how his old school mentality and managing style plays out in today's analytic heavy world.

He's also maybe even more likely to be anti flair and showboating, which is a serious shame for a team whose appeal is boosted by the fact that their players seem to have a lot of fun on the field and they bring excitement through their antics.

I'm not Miss Cleo but the answer will be terribly. It is a really odd hire unless their front office uses an OOTP system where next to his name his reputation is "Legendary" so they just figured he was the best.

That's my take on this. The White Sox were a fun team to follow with all their young talent, and they are not afraid to show personality on the field. If TLR just sits back and allows them to be them, then the difference between him and Renteria will probably be negligible, but if he wants them to "pLaY tHe rIgHt wAy", then it's going to be bad for everyone involved.

We'll see, but I still don't think Bauer, Realmuto, and Springer will get paid what they would've in any normal market.

 

Bauer would've gotten at least ~$200M in last years market? Springer probably around $150M-$170M. We'll see what happens, but I don't see those numbers being touched.

 

Bauer is a little tough to predict as it’s unsure what he’s looking for. But Springer maybe an estimate would’ve been 6/150? I think aav won’t change, he’d get 5/125 all day I think. If he doesn’t get 6/150 I don’t think it’ll be far off. Like you said, we’ll see.

I don’t believe there was anything wrong swinging 3-0 but I don’t think it’s outrageous someone is against it.

 

There are unwritten rules in sports that we’re coached from time we’re kids. In baseball you get shut down from stealing bases when you’re up 9 late, in basketball you aren’t jacking up threes up 30 in the 4th, or throwing bombs up 30 in the 4th NFL. I guess for new age kids that never played sports that’s harder to grasp..

 

But I think having to not swing at a pitch because you’re up is taking it too far.

However, guys on MLB are saying TLR was analytics before there was "analytics". Positioned defense better than the Rays do now. Took into account many things analytics do now.

 

So, yes, old guy, but if what I am hearing is true and for whatever it is worth, he is not old school when it comes to player and in game decisions...

Not an analytical reference. However, I remember one game when they were dominating us in the playoffs back in the day. We were rallying, TLR had a RP in, faced a hitter and I guess we either PH or there was a lefty righty or vice versa. So, TLR puts the pitcher at 1B, brings in a same side pitcher, gets the out, puts the original RP back in to pitch and they kill our rally. As a young kid I thought it was the smartest thing I had ever seen a manager do and the first time I had seen it.. I still remember that to this day..

La Russa did it in this game as well with Joe Mather and Felipe Lopez. I watched the entire 20 innings and vividly remember it.

 

I'm praying to the baseball gods that Manfred will allow games like this to happen in the future. They make up a massively outsized portion of the greatest games in history and the best baseball memories.

I mean, O'Day is 38 and has 40 combined innings the last 3 seasons (though he was healthy for this one). I'm not sure that's even an egregious decision even in a pre-pandemic market under the new 3 batter minimum rules. I'd certainly take him at that price though don't get me wrong lol, but the Braves are probably trying to cut a few million here and there to be able to bring in high level contributors/keep around a guy like Marcell Ozuna.

Kolten Wong's option was declined. He's an excellent defensive player so he could be an option. Isn't necessarily ideal to add a 2B but Biggio could shift to 3B and Wong could bring his top notch defense to 2B.
