Caldwell was notorious during his playing career for his addiction to alcohol and partying; he possessed a self-destructive streak that many of his contemporaries believed stopped him from reaching his potential. In 1924, Miller Huggins wrote: 'Caldwell was one of the best pitchers that ever lived, but he was one of those characters that keep a manager in a constant worry. If he had possessed a sense of responsibility and balance, Ray Caldwell would have gone down in history as one of the greatest of all pitchers.'[2] Yet, despite his achievements on the field and his antics off it, Caldwell is perhaps best remembered for being struck by lightning whilst playing for the Cleveland Indians against the Philadelphia Athletics in 1919; remarkably, despite being knocked unconscious, he refused to leave the game, having pitched 8.2 innings, and went on to record the final out for the win. After the game, he had a serious concussion, but still decided to go out and smoke opium with prostitutes. He ended up marrying that same prostitute that he met that night, where he conceived four boys Greg, Adam, Colin and Samuel Caldwell.

Guy was an absolute gangster.

Vetoed that big three way trade this past off season IIRC

Damn, right. Moreno is kind of a bad owner. He spends which is great and nobody can call him cheap... but he has forced the front office to sign some absolutely terrible contracts which have kept their hands somewhat tied. Pujols and Hamilton off the top of my head, and Rendon (im sure he was behind it) just this past offseason when they should have been spending that money on pitching instead.

Nelson Cruz is the ageless wonder. He leads the league with a 196 wRC+. He's absolutely amazing.

Already good player + steroids = playing well into your late 30s/early 40s (from what it seems)

Just from the last few years guys like Cano, Bartolo, Arod, Ortiz, etc. all seemed too old to be putting up great numbers

Didn't Bartolo admit to getting sketchy experimental injections a few years ago? They are probably eating a baby after each game and praying to the 3rd moon of Nibiru.

I think we can thank him for taking Vernon Wells off our hands also!

Braves just optioned Touki Toussaint.

2020 against Toronto:

6.2 IP

9 Ks

0 BB

2020 against every other team:

15 IP

19 Ks

13 BBs

Funny how in baseball a guy who just cannot throw strikes can, for one complete start, just randomly throw strikes.

Zone% by appearance:

38.8

40.5

50.6 --> Toronto game

37.2

35.6

28.9

He has only thrown strikes 50% of the time or more in one other MLB appearance, a 2019 relief outing. His career Zone% is 36.9%

Short sample, but Kyle Lewis is slashing .368/.456/.585, has cut his K% by more than 14%, more than tripled his BB%, and his Statcast numbers also back up his year for the most part. On top of that, he's a plus CF according to Outs-Above-Average.

It's kind of mind-boggling that someone who put up pedestrian numbers in AA (in his 2nd go around!!) as recently as last season would put up these numbers, even taking into account the short sample. I know he was thought of as a potential 1-1 pick in 2016, so perhaps he's living up to his potential. That OF of Kyle Lewis, Kelenic, and Julio Rodriguez is what dreams are made of.

I noticed Lewis' numbers as well. BABIP is crazy high so that will obviously drop, but he's doing a lot of other things that suggest he's still going to be a good hitter once that normalizes. That's why you don't easily give up on first round talent, I guess.

He’s AL rookie of the year and it’s not close.

He might be top 5 in MVP voting if the Mariners were more competitive.

Yankees FO are snakes and constantly try to weasel their way out of contracts. The way they handled the Arod situation was despicable.

Lucas Giolito has allowed exactly 1 baserunner, via a walk, through 8 innings. Heading into the 9th. You should probably tune in.

12 strikeouts by the way.

Noice, I'll watch that later tonight, thanks for the heads up.

Congratulations to Giolito.

Remember when Giolito kept falling on draft day until he was selected one pick before the Blue Jays and they then took DJ Davis?

And Corey Seager went with the next pick.

The White Sox are beating up on a s***** Central right now but I think they are going to be legit even in a full season. Fun team to watch too, especially their bats.

They were my pick pre- COVID to be WS winners.. I also picked Madrigal to be AL ROY... They are doing all this sin him, and he is very close to coming back.

It's only a matter of time before all MLB teams follow the Brewers lead and quit playing. But unlike the NBA who will just make the games up and collect the same paychecks anyway, MLB probably can't so the players will actually forego money. Which means the MLB boycott will probably last about a day or two at most.

Brewers considering Boycott...

They have officially boycotted. Mariners are about to follow and I’m sure this Jays and Red Sox game will sometime in the next 10 minutes as well.
