Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) Cool. I don't think anyone really has a problem with whoever is hired to do a job...as long as they know what they're doing. Pro sports is a tough gig. As fans we're constantly campaigning for men to be fired, released, demoted, traded, murdered....has nothing to do with their race or gender...we just want competence. I hope she's competent and does a great job. Edited July 22, 2020 by Krylian
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Keynan Middleton has an electric arm, but he has no clue where it's going. Wow! Also the man on 2nd in a tie game is going to piss a lot of people off. His fastball velo has dropped from like 97+ to 94 over the past 3 years. Was he hurt last year?

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Yeah, I understand the significance, but I'm weary of these being Jessica Mendoza situations. Godammit... I was expecting more here sir.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Meanwhile in Baltimore Lmfao There really isn't any context in which this isn't completely humiliating for their franchise.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Yeah, I understand the significance, but I'm weary of these being Jessica Mendoza situations. What is that supposed to mean?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 Colin Poche torn UCL Welp baseball is back, full of disappointments.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 What is that supposed to mean? Jessica Mendoza is a s***** broadcaster and was only put on the air because of her gender rather than because she is good at what she does. Doesn't help that she directly replaced Schilling who was actually really good.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Jessica Mendoza is a s***** broadcaster and was only put on the air because of her gender rather than because she is good at what she does. Doesn't help that she directly replaced Schilling who was actually really good. She's not any worse than half the broadcasters in the league. I have always thought she was a solid broadcaster and pretty professional in the role. Broadcasters frequently get picked for reasons outside of their talent or merit - see the majority of broadcasters who are ex-players. Being said, I think she is good enough at the job to have the job. Sure, she is a diversity hire. I'd go so far as to say that calling Jessica Mendoza a bad broadcaster and stating that she was hired because of her gender is blatantly sexist.

I have always thought she was a solid broadcaster and pretty professional in the role. She does SNB (higher bar) and genuinely does not seem to know a lot about baseball for someone in the colour booth. She replaced someone who was much better and much more entertaining, which probably adds to my dislike. I'd say "used to play pro baseball" is a better reason to hire someone than "has a vagina" but that's just me. I'd go so far as to say that calling Jessica Mendoza a bad broadcaster and stating that she was hired because of her gender is blatantly sexist. Well, I'm not alone in this opinion. Actually, I am correct beyond all belief. Also, you JUST said she was a diversity hire, meaning you also think she was hired due to her gender. Is your brain short circuiting? Are you also a sexist? I'd go so far as to tell you to lick my balls. Also, never forget: "That's a win for the Cubs" (said after the eventual winning run got on base vs. the Cubs in extra innings.)

You can be a diversity hire and be qualified. It's broadcasting, not sprocket science - there are hundreds of people who can call a baseball game so it is fair for a company to choose among qualified candidates based on their perception of audience preference. Her employers probably fairly think that there is some portion of their audience that reacts positively to having a woman in the booth. Lots of women and progressive men watch baseball. Women are infiltrating the game at every level, whether you like it or not buddy. She has also played at the highest comparable level of comparable sport that a woman can play at.

Like I said, I have no problem with women "infiltrating" the sport. I have a problem with women being hired because they are women. I am in favour of a complete meritocracy. I complain about guys like Pat Tabler, Joe Buck (bad case of nepotism), Matt Vasgersian, etc. My problem with Mendoza is in many ways the same as my problem with Joe Buck. Joe Buck continues on because his dad was a legend in the booth. So this boring dipshit, with no knowledge of the sport he's covering, calls WS games every year. Drives me crazy. I don't think Mendoza is as bad as Buck, but I'd much prefer to hear a guy like Cal Ripken, for example, on SNB instead of female Pat Tabler. Softball and baseball are very different. I don't think her softball play gives her any extra insight into baseball because she doesn't seem to know much. She's just a cliche machine. Lots of women and progressive soy boys do not watch baseball, at all. The Keith Law types are like 1% of baseball's viewership.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Mookie signing 12 years $400M with the Dodgers?
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Mookie Betts is reportedly close to a 10-year contract extension with the Dodgers worth over 350 mil.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 There goes our rebuild plans. Trade Skydome, Fire Pearson, Tear down Montoyo.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 There was probably no chance in hell Mookie was signing here, but I kinda liked dreaming about it. Oh well. Hope he gets a great contract.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Well, looks like it will be Springer thats a Jay next year
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Mookie is probably a top ~3 player in the game. If this extension happens and is reasonable, at least as reasonable as one can expect for the caliber of such a player, then this is the Dodgers dunking all over the Red Sox. Part of the reason why he got moved is he was supposedly unwilling to talk extension and was dead set on testing free agency.

Most teams don't ever get a realistic opportunity to lock in a true superstar like Mookie - that's a right acquired in the trade that is not captured by any normal surplus value calculation. The Red Sox look like a second rate organization now and their brand is tarnished. Bellinger and Betts is a potentially legendary tandem.

Yeah considering what the Dodgers gave up, what they got back, and now this rumored extension, they made out amazingly well here. Mookie is arguably the 2nd best player in the game at age 27. The Dodgers are going to be a beast franchise for a long time. They pay their stars, and develop talent as well/better than anyone. The Red Sox looking like a cheap second rate mess out of all of this is just icing on the cake.
